The alter ego has returned to start yet another thread on a musical anime. Oh, how I love my musical animes.
Anyways, this one focuses on a piano prodigy by the name of Chiaki. Seems to be on his high horse in this episode. He wants to leave Japan because he feels his musical career will be suffocated. No matter. He meets up with this interesting dame named Megumi Noda. She pretty much owns the piano and it appears to be the reason Chiaki has decided to wait it out.
Having read the first six volumes of the manga (there's more out, but they're never available at my Barnes and Noble), I've been looking foward to this anime since I've heard of its development. I'm always a sucker for music anime, especially classical music anime. The animation was quite nice (first episode, so we'll see how it pans out during its season run). It has that 'Honey and Clover' feel to it. I was also quite fond of both the OP and ED themes.
Finally! Something to watch other than Death Note and Kanon!
Sounds good based on the very short review I read of it in that Jan-July 2007 list thing. Since you've read the manga, would you mind explaining what sort of comedy it is (the synopsis says its music/comedy)? You said that it has a Honey + Clover feel to it, so that definitely will make me want to give it a try. I noticed it also says that it's JC Staff, who also did Honey + Clover, so that really makes it seem like it might come out pretty well. One last thing, is there a lot of romance or no? I ask this because the synopsis page only mentions music/comedy, but you mentioned that it's because of love that the boy stays.
Judging from the 1st episode, its a good start. Ya as raw wrote, there is a Honey & Clover feel from the anime. There is also the Drama, if comparing the 1st epi of the anime n drama. The drama is one level better.
I really did like the first episode. The characters' personalities and dialogue made up for the at best mediocre quality of the animation and character designs. Nonetheless, Seki Tomokazu and Kawasumi Ayako's performances in the lead roles and the amusing plot make you forget about that somewhat.
That said, a poorly animated series with a good plot and good voice cast will outdo a well-animated series with bad plot and/or poor voice acting any day. Definitely one to watch more of.
In any case, the popularity of the manga and the spinoff live-action TV series seems to have let the anime version's first episode become the highest-rating late-night first anime episode ever, with a 5.4% viewer share (beating Hajime no Ippo's record of 4.8% - Source: Anime News Network). It will be interesting to see whether that audience reacts favourably to the series and tune in next episode.
The Drama was way much better than the anime and manga, but the anime was still quite good.
Hope the anime doesn't stop at the Christmas concert, but follows the manga after he left Japan
I hope the they'll make the 2nd season for the drama soon since it became one of my top 5 dramas for the year XD

There is little/some romance in the early stage, but the real deal happens much much later on, that's if they decide to follow the manga in the later stage and not end it =P

I'm doing the compare/contrast bit in regards to the anime and live-action versions as well. I would have already watched all the live action but I was waiting for the anime to start up so that I may watch both simultaneously. I have to say the live action has the edge so far after one episode. Both works end up at pretty much the same point, but since the live action had an hour and a half to work with, it came out so much more fun to watch. It's going to be kind of weird watching the same material twice (and with different voices and performers as well), but I loved what I read of Nodame Cantabile during my Barnes and Noble adventures. I'm greatly looking foward to all the fun and antics that Nodame and Chiaki will provide this season.
By the way, can't get enough of the ED theme for some reason. I'm waiting for an OST; not just for this song but all the classical pieces that will soon be finding themselves onto this show. Sonata for two pianos is already an awesome piece. =)
lol nothing in the anime can compare to the orchestra music in the drama. I'm really curious to see how the anime will play out in contrast to the drama when
Chiaki performs as a conductor for the first time in his life with Beethoven Symphony No.7
The drama was great in that moment, but the best part and most memorable would be when
Chiaki performed on piano with Stressman my favourite piece, Rachmaninoff Concerto No.2
In my opinion, nothing in the anime can surpass these moments in the live action =P

I'm glad that they are making a decent effort in animating the intsrument playing. Episode 2 was a fun watch. However, having watched a bulk of the live action already (impatience got the best of me), it's hard to listen to Mine in this anime. I haven't had much of a problem with Chiaki and Nodame here (in fact, I like the voices in the anime better), but Mine's voice is hard to get used to.
Next week: everyone's favorite homosexual timpanist complete with afro/musctache combo!
I really did like the first episode. The characters' personalities and dialogue made up for the at best mediocre quality of the animation and character designs. Nonetheless, Seki Tomokazu and Kawasumi Ayako's performances in the lead roles and the amusing plot make you forget about that somewhat.

I guess the animation is not great but I don't think it's poor. It certainly doesn't have a super awesome huge animation budget but I think it's well executed and certainly very easy on the eye (mine anyway! i melt everytime Nodame pouts ).
The seiyuu for Nodame rocks too! *googles Kawasumi Ayako*
Just watched episode 2. Have to say I'm eagerly waiting for more characters to appear!
Anyway, regarding the live-action, I at first thought it wouldn't even compare to the anime (perhaps cos of the stigma of watching dubbed live-action shows on tv when I was younger), but after hearing all the positive comments about it, I'm actually quite eager to check it out. A question first though: who plays Nodame in the live-action?? _________________ [img:600:229:a17cd2b483]http://www.anime-source.com/upload/uploadFiles/revy_sig.jpg[/img:a17cd2b483]
Watched the first two episodes last night - definitely one to keep watching. The general feel of this is good - though somewhat cliched characters...it feels as if I've seen them from somewhere else before...
It feels really weird hearing Chiaki though - I keep thinking it's Sagara Sousuke from FMP...
I can imagine this anime playing out much better as a drama - which seems to be the general consensus at the moment. As a piano player myself I can't help but feel the scenes where they're playing lack the emotion it could do if it were real.

Whoops. Sorry, I didn't get to this question sooner. Nodame is performed by Juri Ueno. She portrays Nodame very well, I might add.
Anyways, two things I have come to terms with while watching this anime:
1) Ultimately, the live-action version will win out as the best version of Nodame Cantabile.
It's really hard to beat out the live version. I haven't seen how they would formally animate an orchestra piece yet, but I'm almost certain it won't have the same impact as the live version. This isn't because the story and events are already spoiled for me. It's just that the live version of the orchestra sets are just that good.
2) Regardless, Nodame Cantabile is a great anime in its own right and perhaps one of the best animes put out this year.
I believe the story to be more fun than Death Note and Kanon but that's just me. Despite whatever shortcomings I may find in this show, I can't help but enjoy Nodame Cantabile. The story itself is just appealing to my interests no matter how many iterations I have already experienced. The cast itself is a laugh a minute and it will only get better:
I'm waiting for a certain Contrabass player. Although she doesn't get as much screentime as the fantastic four, I always liked her...
And as much as I'm going to probably criticize it when it comes, I'm looking foward to the first orchestra sets. Anyways, on to some episode impressions!
Episode 3:
Ah yes, the introduction of our homosexual timpanist, Masumi. The guy sports a fro, which already is funny in itself given his circumstances. Also, I found it funny how those who actually know Masumi refer to him either as "she" or "timpani queen". Confuses the hell out of people who don't get it yet.
With Masumi, we finally get the last piece in what I would like to call the 'fantastic four'. Chiaki, Nodame, Mine and Masumi. They will be the students with the most focus from this point on in the anime. We'll be seeing them hang out a lot and given the way Masumi and Nodame duel to the death over Chiaki's 'love', expect some fun comedy along the way.
The anime did sport a scene not found in the live action, which is the scene where Nodame, Mine and Masumi form an ensemble and play a composition that Chiaki wrote. It wasn't very long but it was nice to watch, especially since they decide to jazz it up. Nodame always walks to the beat of her own drum and she seems to be the one deciding the flow of the musical piece, that is, until Chiake decides to barge in... I do appreciate the fact that they inserted this scene here because I liked reading it in the manga. =)
Episode 4:
No, episode four is not subtitled yet. Yes, I watched it. Yes, I understood it but only because I know most of the story up to a certain point anyways.
Milch (who we'll all figure out is Stresseman) makes his appearance in this episode. We're finally getting into the orchestra part of the series which is the reason I watch this anime. Gotta love how he accidently busts out those ecchi pictures when asking for some students for his 'new' orchestra. Milch justs adds another comedy notch with his old man pervertedness. It may seem tired to some, but I find it funny, especially his ability to successfully flirt with any girl of any age. Actually, he has the help of a couple drinks but that's neither here nor there. =P
I'm still waiting patiently for my Contrabass player. Judging by the pace, I'll be happy if I see her in episode 5 but no later than episode 6. =)
I'm waiting ever so impatiently for a full version of "Konna ni chikaku de...". They already have a music video for the OP, which I believe is the inferior of the two. "Konna ni" is just addicting to no end and I love Crystal Kay's voice. Bring forth a PV for "Konna ni chikaku de..." before I start busting heads!!!
