Hi, i think this would be the most appropriate place to ask. I tried search with the words Anime and German. Though results weren't really useful.

So i decided to open a new topic.
I was wondering what's up with the German language in Anime?
For example Fate stay night, they say the spells in German. And also in Bleach bounto arch. And there's some more anime which i forgot were they speak spells in german.

So i was just wondering why german?

Maybe some think German are cool?
Or maybe some the storyline has something to do with german.

I dunno, but I dun think it's too much of a surprise... I've seen chinese, french, russian... etc

Elfin Lied has got german, at least the title and some other tiny bits.

I've heard Russian dubs and they are ATROCIOUS!!! They don't bother getting different voice actors for individual characters, all they do is get one bored guy speakng over the japanese reading from what must be a translated sheet.
I remember once there was a baby gurgling and the 'dude' translated even that -"gah gah".

Ah but elfen lied had some German yea. The title is even German.

But i mainly refer to spells being said in German. Like the bounto arc they said spells in German. And also Fate Stay night the spells they were saying were spoken in German. And i'm quite sure i heard some more anime were they speak the spells in German.

So basically i was just wondering why they choose German. Do they think German language has something mysterious or demonic or something Very Happy ?

well first off, the german language itself is pretty cool if you hear it. second, when Hitler was in reign he looked for supernatural "stuff" to prove his Aryan superiority and he put a lot of effort into the projects. That might have something to do with it.

well, i noticed that too. They use german in lot's of anime.
also in chrono chrusade, NGE, Gunslinger girl...
and most time it is so badly spoken, that you cant tell if it really is german Wink
the most ridiculous one was the "bastard" anime^^ the main charakters name is Dark Schneider. Every time i heard them say this name i had to laugh just because it sounded so stupid^^ you know, with "schneider" they probably meant "Cutter" but Schneider means "tailor" in German^^

but I have to agree with sakib, its probably because German language sounds a bit more powerfull than the soft japanese language. Thats probably why they often use it for magic spells.
But that about Hitler searching for supernatural "stuff" sounds pretty fictional to me. I am German, and if never heard of something like this (except in movies)
it's perhaps more the influence of German and Japan being Allies in WW2

so that supernatural stuff is false? wow was i misinformed. well what we do know is that Hitler was a man who instigated ambitious projects so that might have something to do with it. also the fact that Hitler eluded all manner of capture from the Allies so that put a sense of mystery to the Germans

It's not so much false as blown out of proportions. For examples lots of movies and games lately have been exploring elements of supernatural connections with Nazi Germany. For example the movie Hellboy has Hitlers Reich having a supernatural department looking for objects of power (The spear that ponctured christ's side for example) to use in the war against the Allies. As well as games like Blood Rayne and Blood Rayne 2, which have very similar themes, involving vampires on both sides of the war, and searches for objects of power and such. However any actual links that German has with supernatural elements would probably go back to before there really was a language called "German", to it's ancestral languages, which were used by people like druids (I guess you could call them worshippers of an acient religion, sort of). But ya, they probably just used it because German sounds so much more authoritative than Japanese, and also because of the recent movies and games that have made a "popular", but false connection with German and the supernatural.

Demonbane is another anime that uses German for the chanting and spells, and is heavily influenced by H.P Lovecraft's fictional works. Now if German is used by H.P Lovecraft in his works as well, then you know why it's used for chantings and spells in so many places. His supernatural works are very well known, and very well developed. However i've never personally read any, so i'm not sure Confused .

Well, ok my essays done, lol. I don't know what happened there I just started typing and I couldn't stop Very Happy .

Don't worry about that. Now that the new arc has begun, the next language for Bleach to butcher is Spanish!

I believe it is just to give the anime a different feel; plobably like "it's not all about japan and japanese". True, they foul up, but the point is to give some things a sense of "foreignness".

For example, in the FSN example that you mention Rin has spells in (bad) German to give a sense that she has studied things outside of a traditional Japanese experience, even if that is "magic" and rally doesn't follow a set of fixed norms.

At least that's what I think.

i havent watched bleach for 3 weeks... I'm getting tired of it, though i did downloaded the eps.

But German ancestral language and druid things... Never knew about that. Though if you put it that way. It sort of makes sense why they tend to use german.

That's not true. I had German class in school (living in Netherlands.. yea no idea why we had to learn the German language) But most of ppl i know just say it to joke around or sound funny. Though i have to admit when they use it in anime it sounds cooler than how a actual german person speaks.

ps. I hated German class... it pulled down my grades... Even though i sucked at it i'm capable of understanding about half of the things german people say oO.

I'm sure they think it sounds kinda cool. I mean it is the same in Europe with Japanese stuff that you can get now everywhere.

I think Japanese sounds pretty rough especially when they swear, nothing beats that ^^

things you can feel from watching anime is that japs love 1) americans and 2) germans. my speculation is that it has something to do with japanese and german history together, but not being all up on my WWII trivia, i could be completely offbase.
