Some friends of mine as part of their club project interviewed every student in my school (high school in the U.S.) and posed the question "Would you die for your country?". Of course an adult faculty staff member would never put this personal pressure on a student but nobody attempted to intervene in the survey/interviews.

The results of the pole were 99.1% of males and 72.1% of females responded "yes". I find these results most inaccurate to the highest degree so in other words, bullshit. I suppose the concept of death isn't the strongest understanding in the teenage mind or maybe they caved into the public pressure and lied or perhaps everyone is just very nationalistic under Bush's rule >_> not that I doubt Bush can conjure such fantastic patriotism results but...

Of course, "Would you die for your country?" is somewhat straitforward but can be interpreted in different ways. I'm not going to give specefic circumstances to what it means but I had something... patriotic in mind when I posed the question.

Anywayz there are too many variables to take into account in the accuracy of the previous project so an anonymous survey on the internet is the best way to go. If you want to say a few things, that'd be nice too.

"haven't decided" or "maybe" are not options so they would suffice as "No".

Would I die for my country? Well that's pretty circumstantial. I guess the better question is 'What would I die for?'. I wouldn't die for my coutry lets say if PM Harper suddenly said 'All guys kill themselves.' or if my country needed to mow down the populations a bit. But what my country stands for, truth, justice and equality, along with something precious to protect, like my family or children, I'd say yes. I wouldn't go enlisting in the army if I had to go over to Iraq and fight for a profiting capitalist, but if the battle's here or affects my home land, killing my people, I'd pick up M-16 and march onward with all my strength until I died.

Cheers to "On guard for Thee".

Smart answer. Too smart of an answer for my opinion. I was afraid "would you die for your country?" would be answerd as "would you fight for your country?" Obviously if invaders attacked and killed your friends and family you'd fight. That's not realistic though in this day in age of most places in the world. Instead of creating your own circumstances please use the circumstances your nation is facing right now. In my case, I'm in the U.S. so dying for my country would mean enlisting and going to Iraq for the benefit of another nation and dying so my answer would be "No".

without a doubt yes. yes i would.

to me, serving my country is the highest order of honour that anyone can achieve.
a lot i know of people who think getting into that job or going into that university is the greatest thing thats ever happened to them, but in all, serving the country that raised one is the greatest honour.

i love my country, like many others, but unlike many others, when put to the test of whether they would apply for the defence or not, around 90% had made up excuses or changed their mind.

now, serving to me is a great honor, but dying for my country, thats an even greater honour; to be forever immortalised in the army's wall of remembrance, but its not what i want.

i want to defend my country for the people i love and the people that have the right to freedom, but i also dont want to be die honourably for a country thats far from honourable.
its the cowards, the racists, the gangs, the punks, the drug users, the idiots, the protesters, the hippies, the refugees that i hate about this country, that i wont die protecting.
what i mean by this is that my country has become so diverse that gangs of lebanese, sudanese, chinese, muslims, etc. are coming here and ruining everything that australia stands for, that its worth dieing to protect them because they dont look at the australian flag with honour or passion, they just see it as a place far better than their own, but far lesser than them selves.

Well going over to Iraq isn't nessesarily a death sentence. In that case, then you would be 'unwilling to fight and possibily die' rather then 'dying for my country'. I'd argue that the war in Iraq benefits the American nation rather then Iraqis people, but...I've made my point through other threads plenty of times already.

You never specified the scenerio, and just now you said for 'your country', implying a whole torrent of possible answers (ex. would you die for your country if they asked you to die, would you die if i knew i wasn't coming back from ________insert war, presently; basically depending on civil and political matters that you would die for).

Right now, the question in jeapordy is very controversal and rather confusing. There are lots of ways and reasons to die for your country and also lots of ways to fight for it, situation pending.

If the question asked was 'would i fight for my country in the current political position currently in the military effort of Canadian militants in Afaganistan knowing I would die' then that would be a no, because that would mean going over to Afaganistan and dying for something I don't believe in and possibily killing people that I'd rather not kill.

Really the question to be asked would be "For what reason would you die for your country", specify a scenerio currenlty afflicting your country in residence and determine if the current matter would merit your self sacrifice...

The thing is the governement want us to die for our country. If our country is corrupt, it's up to us to believe whether it's ok to die for out country. In democratic country there's no such thing as the country forces you to die for her.

To put it bluntly....NO.

But that's mainly because the country I was born into, is not the country of my parents. Nor are they of the same country. Then again, neither are my grandparents. So much for nationalism when I'm not even sure wich nationality I belong to. Universal. That's what I am.

In any case, I think there's only a select few who actually go to fight for their country because they're truly patriotic. I believe people go out and fight for the people in that country who they care about and others for their ideals.

What are we really dieing for? Is it for freedom and peace or for someone's agenda?

I would put it this way, It all matters on the individual. If you want to die for your country because of national pride the so be it. If you want to die for what you believe in them so be it also.

I would fight for the country I'm in (Canada) for something I believe I'm fighting for like to bring peace, order and freedom to others. But never to die for there are many things I want to do to help the world.

Would I die for my country? hell no especially not for America. To begin with America is not that great a place to live in nowadays because there is an even less chance of getting rich and those in middle class have a hard time just to survive. America wasn't what it used to be because we started of as producers and in the last couple decades became consumers.

This happened because some very greedy people who owned some very big companies discoved what is known as "outsourcing". So now most products are made overseas at extremly low prices so theres more money going to the company owners. But this is for another topic.

What I'm trying to say is that why should I fight and probably die for a country that doesn't give a s*** about it's citizens. I would only fight if and only if it benifited me dirctly(ex. money, for friends, family, immunity from taxes, free land)

P.S. why can't the president and other political leaders go to war, it's not like if they die we can't do jack. This is a democracy so we can just elect some new leaders. Just because theyr'e rich doesn't mean they can act like sissies. Their the ones who wanted a war I'm not going to stand up for a guy who hides behind their money and doesn't even make an attempt to protect themselves.

ya I would die for my country. because there is no other place I live without calling a foreigner or a stranger. also I live in a country has no taxes nor fees for medical services (where there aren't a lot of countries have this system). the country doesn't mean the political system that leads the country but the land that you step on it. that is why saddam fell because the fought for him self not for country. On other side the US troops is fighting because their leader/commander command they to fight not to defend their country
btw:: I don't like my country too much but I am ready to die for it.

I have read alot of books were something like this pops up, it is normaly about loyalty. Someone will say something like you have betrayed your country". And everytime this pops up i always think the same thing to myself. Hoping the reply the person gives is something like mine. I do not believe you should be loyalty to a place person or idea just because of how or/and where you were born. I think is falls under idiotic logic.
So no i would not die for my country just because it is my country, but i would die for a reason if it was worth it (i hope). Oh and sorry about it not all being on par with the topic, but i have been wanting to say something like that for a while and well... i sounded cool to me Razz
Btw this is my first post here so.. hello how do you all do? My name is Matthew. I hope i can find more things to post about. i'm not much of a forum person
