Anyone else notice the distinct lack of new "original" animes coming out?

They all seem so alike (Detective academy Q, clamp school detectives) or to have ripped off an older anime(Lady death, vampire princess miyu), or worse,
be a spin off of a prevoiusly over-shown series like gundam (I am no fan of gundam's plot or character development, although it does have quality mechanical perspective Shocked )

I personally think we need to be seeing more good quality animes that have an in-depth plot(like hacksign, the best anime i've seen yet) and not such an obvious (love hina) or rubbish ending (cough, full metal alchemist, cough) and that are not completely perverted(new cutie honey Cool and can be taken seriously and actually present the seasoned anime fan with something substantial to get their teeth into.

Your thoughts, although preferably no gundam ones Smile

or cutie honey..

It depends what you like in an anime series. For example, i wasn't able to finish .Hack//Sign, it was so slow to develop or for anything to happen that i totally stopped watching.

You'll notice that it's the same thing everywhere. Have you seen an original reality tv show in the last 2 years? I haven't. Same old stuff used in mostly every show. But the formula works, people like those shows and they'll be aired until we can't absorb one more second of it.

hey have you wached those mentioned those anime?? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
those are original thoughts by their respective authors and if there may be some similarities well its just coincidences Razz

those animes that you coughed at are GREAT ANIME series and it really captured the HEARTS of anime viewers..and about the endings the authors
idea is for viewers to wach the whole series and not just anticipating the ending!!!!!!

and one more thing...Hack.sign wasn't able to beat the sales that Love Hina and FMA did and are more popular!!!!!! Wink

i'm not opposing you but its what I feel about what you said about those mentioned animes

<swims about cautiously>

Sorry if i upset anyone, especialy you Celas, that was not my intention.
I wasn't talking as if the authors did it deliberately, I was more worried at how we seem to be seeing less original works lately- even if it is coincidence.
I love Love hina, i though it was great, remember the robot turtles of doom? Very Happy

Nomori, your so right its scary, I didn't notice it was happenning everywhere, even my breakfast ceral is a copy of corn flakes! Your very sharp, Nomori, Next time i loose my can opener I'll ask you to open my tuna!

Loveless, Elfenlied is original but is much too gorey or crazy for me. Sure naked elven girls with psychic powers is all good clean fun, but it isn't "clean" when they start acting like Ray from evangelion, showing no feelings, then ripping people apart. Have you also noticed how each new girl you meet is much more powerful than the previous ones?
Called me a "Stupid" dolphin but i think Elfen Lied is alot like Chobits lol.
(call me stupid)

Well, many could argue that Hack is crap Smile
Anyway, if you aren't watching enough good stuff it means you aren't looking hard enough. There has always been tons of derivative crap and there always will be (good new ideas are hard to come upon and often are harder to sell). One just has to look for the few gems in the crowd. Some recent shows worth checking out are Monster, Paranoia Agent, Otogi Zoushi, Samurai Champloo, Gantz, Twin Spica, and Beck. And if the new shows aren't enough you can always watch something older.

Now that's the last thing in the world that determines a show's quality. Some good shows sell well but cliched mainstream crap sells even better.

Sales are the last thing you should rely on for a product's quality.

Example : the game Enter the Matrix from Atari that was released the same day as the second movie of the trilogy.

It had like over 500 000 sales in the first few days (i think, maybe more but i don't want to exagerate).

Did anyone play that game? I rented it and let me say it was uber crap.

So we could say : Nealry record sales ≠ Game/Anime/Manga quality

I've watched both and I don't find them alike story wise. Yes both main characters have a loss of memory/data and an alter ego that remembers everything but the story itself is different.

Stuff we get from the tv and movies will follow the time honoured formulas that work. However once in a while something original will breakthru and set new standards for the industry and loads of copycats will follow. That's the norm.

Fair point, I have also watched Samuri champloo, it is good, but not great in my opinon.

I also think sales are irrelavent. They show nothing except which animes are sold in most stores.

'Story' and 'plot' are synonyms, there's no such thing as 'story plot'. Also 'plot' doesn't have a plural.

I think the two terms do have differences...

Plot
- The pattern of events or main story in a narrative or drama.
Basically one can say the plot is the whole 'plan' of the series : what motivates the events to turn out this way, what schemes that will affect how events in the main story goes, etc. The key emphasis here is on the word 'main'.

Story
- An account or recital of an event or a series of events, either true or fictitious.
- A usually fictional prose or verse narrative intended to interest or amuse the hearer or reader; a tale.
- The plot of a narrative or dramatic work.

In other words, a story can be a plot... or it can be just be a telling of information on the side that is not relevant in any way to the main story.

Thus the whole account of the series can be said to be a story with a main story and many side stories. The stories related to driving the main story would be classified under the term 'plot'. The stories irrelevant to the main story, 'fluff'.

Difficult to tell when the overall story gets convoluted and muddled.

In fact you can also have the plot of the side stories as well, if you consider them each a main story in its own end. "Story plots" however is weird in syntax. "The plot of the various stories in the series" would be more appropriate?

A plot can be a story but a story may be the plot of something other than the main story. Confusing, is it not Laughing

Sorry, got willy-nilly technical Razz

Ooops... to add to the topic itself, there are just only a few main stories that can be classified into different unique categories. Once a person gets familiar with a majority of the categories, they will always find similarities among the anime they watch. The contents may change but the plot remains the same albeit with slight twists here and then.
