I already added in the first post about the unsuccessful attempts at invading Canada. 1812 was one of them. It's officially time for f2's "Canada and it's History part 2" isn't it? The purpose of this thread (from what I can understand) is to promote knowledge in the area of history in which Canadians had global influence, which seems to have a huge gap from mangaddict's description of 5 paragraphs summing up our existence.
hmm it should be talked about a lot, the subject is that Canadians aren't included in American textbooks. If that's true and that the war of 1812 wasn't included in th texts then Americans are doing some serious propaganda. It should be because I doubt such a major event would be concealed; it sure as hell was a major part of grade 8 history for me.
BTW, it was British forces; not specifically Canadians that burned down the white house; they didn't burn down civilian residences, only public buildings
ahh geez I think I'll hold out till a lil later to write another essay; takes a lot out of a guy
edit: His name was terry fox; god aa, you live in a place where there's an elementary school named after him, there's a cancer research fund after him in the same name... _________________ "Arguing with someone over the internet is a lot like the special Olympics. Really. Really now. The word "Canada" has only 5 entries in our index. One goes to the map so that doesn't count. Another goes to trade imports and exports and that's only a long sentence with no relevant history in it. Another goes to the 5 paragraph page I mentioned earlier. The other 2 entries mention Canada once, in a sentence. So there's not any real Canadian info at all. I suppose it's not fair though to compare Canada to Britain which has like over 50 entries in the index. Just about the only Canadian person mentioned in our History book is Lord Durham and some guy named McDonald. The War of 1812 isn't in the index nor is mentioned at all and I don't recall Canada being mentioned in either world wars. In our tests, Canada isn't ever mentioned at all. I asked my History teacher and he said the war of 1812 is the U.S.'s forgotten war. Not important or censorship?
Propaganda? I don't think so. I'd take it that the U.S. lost that war if it isn't mentioned but my history book doesn't leave out other U.S. past failures and lost wars as well as the U.S. black spots such as racism and imperialism so why the war of 1812? And why not mention Canada in either world wars? [/i] |

If they leave that out, you'll see how chaotic it'll be.
Which reminds me of the protest in many countries in Asia where Japan released a history text book and it had no mentions of any of their committed war crimes in WW2.

That "some guy" was our first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald.
Was quite known for being an alcoholic and drunk during campaigns and speeches.
Taken from Wikipedia:
Macdonald was well known for his wit and also for his alcoholism. He is known to have been drunk for many of his debates in parliament. Two apocryphal stories are commonly repeated; the first describing an election debate in which Macdonald was so drunk he began vomiting violently on stage while his opponent was speaking. Picking himself up Macdonald told the crowd, "see how my opponent's ideas disgust me." The second version has Macdonald responding to his opponent's query of his drunkenness with "It goes to show that I would rather have a drunk Conservative than a sober Liberal."
John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham lauded in Canadian history for his recommendation to introduce responsible government.

I guess your History teacher is somewhat correct that it is a forgotten war.
Perhaps the American doesn't like the fact they lost to the British.

Propaganda I say. Perhaps its a way of glorifying themselves to make them look more heroic and such. Make it look like they did all the dirty work. _________________

True true.
In 1886, Canada's western province were becoming fearful and angry at immigrants. Head tax of $50 was imposed on Chinese to discourage low class Chinese from entering. It was not effective enough and was increase to $500 and then then Immigration act was impose so that no Chinese were allow to enter the country. If you have prove that your ancestors had to pay the head tax then they can receive the money back if you show proof.
In 1908. all Sikhs were require to have $200 when arriving to Canada.
Taken from Wikipedia:
Perhaps the most famous incident of anti-Sikh racism in British Columbia was in 1914 when the Komagata Maru arrived in Vancouver harbour with 376 Sikhs aboard, who were all denied entry. The Komagata Maru spent two months in harbour while the Khalsa Society went through the courts to appeal their case. The Khalsa Society also kept the passengers on the Komagata Maru alive during those two months. When the case was lost, HMCS Rainbow, a Canadian Navy cruiser, towed the Komagata Maru out to sea while thousands of white people cheered from the seawall of Stanley Park. _________________

Canada was racist and still is because racism hasn't left for good anywhere in the world. I think a more accurate term in the modern age however would be discrimination. Even with the underground railroad and moving the black slaves over to Canada, it doesn't mean that the people accepted them just like that. On the contrary, they got to live in really run down housing. When WW2 came, Canada also stuffed the Japanese into internment camps. The aboriginals are discriminated against, even today and giving them privileges isn't making it any easier. AA already mentioned the treatment the Chinese had. But I believe in this country. I think that a country's past isn't nearly as significant as the country's future. And it is in my solemn opinion that Canada isn't taking a turn for the worse in terms of acceptance. All we have to do now is stop our pollution and treat our environment with the same respect we would our family.
BUT since the point of this thread is to give a whoop as to that we exist out here, anyone else want to share some more insight into Canada? We might not have all our money green but we are the second largest country in the world. |

And yes, we are the second largest country in the world. We are not the size of Texas.

In the passionate eye on CBC, they interview many supposedly nice Canadians and found out that even the nicest had hints of racism, hate and discrimination within them

Thats gonna take a lot of work because many new immigrants come from country where they can dump without getting charged. I said many, not all. _________________

F2 > You forgot the Metis and Manitoba/Saskatchewan.
I always laugh when people think Canada's always been welcoming and multi-cultural. First, the aboriginals were ignored. Then the French. Then the Metis (Who are half French, half native, for you non-Canadian people). Then Blacks during/after the American Civil War. Then other non-english-speakers. Then the Chinese with the railway. Then Asians with the head tax. Then the Canadian-Japanese during WWII. Don't tell me we're welcoming...
Ah, and I also laugh when people think we're a 'peaceful' country. XD.
And you can thank Lord Durham for responsible and representative government. ^^;
I'm also surprised the textbook doesn't mention our 'oh-so-crappy' health care. =P. Or the CPR. Or the rebellions (Yes, rebellions!). Or the gold rush? Softwood Lumber? Nothing? >.<
Ah, another interesting tidbit~ We have a communist party. Mhm...And a Lenin-ist party. And Marx-ist too, iirc.... |

| ahh just the right season. but if you're going out skating on the ice on the lake or something then you'd best watch out for the bumpiness, and also the thickness of the ice. Also, you might have to shovel the snow off depending on where you're skating (but that's probably going to be shoveled already). If you came in december you'd have been sorely disappointed; the wether was pretty warm (relatively speaking). Are you coming up to northern, central, west coast, east coast, maritime or the prairies? |

you're so damn lucky. It will be another year before my school has an out of country fieldtrip. Though I'm not to excited about Canada, it is dangerous, considering that Canada police don't carry guns, or was that Britain? _________________ As long as there are people to kill in this great, wide, over crowded world, I will never disappear. |
