is it just me or does it seem that we have started to ignore books and lean more to the internet for our reading, researching, doing whatever it is we do.
i want to see what you guys think about this issue
for me i think that they are gradually going obsolete to the power of computers. If given the choice of reading a book or going on the computer, you'd probably choose the computer wouldn't you? I mean books are still good and all but it just seems that books are more.....old-fashioned slowly dying, either that or made in e-format. _________________ Mortified: To cause or to experience shame, humiliation, or wounded pride.

A very obvious yes because that's what technology is supposed to do, make things more convenient. In the case of information technology, accessing information from a remote location is much more convenient than searching for and finding a paper source. It benefits more people because more people can read it. It's cheaper to produce and distribute. Will it ever replace written documents? Some, but for the important ones never because of internet terrorism, aka hacking. In other words, I think paper will eventually become obsolete, but not replaced.
Personally, I prefer the feel of the paper, the smell and the clear reflective pages instead of the glare of the monitor. I also prefer to write on paper than write on the computer at times because I can feel the creation, the computer is a great interface but it seems impersonal. That being said, I very much like paper when I'm reading. The only problem is that it takes a long time to find the correct paper source from a library, see if it's checked out, find the information, reference instead of a simple cut and paste in quotation marks. If I had time though, I'd rather read it from a book than look it up on google.

Now that ya metioned that
i think books are only for studying which means the subjects we study in school, college or Uni
and books for fun or intertainment which are the short stories or novels
other than those i think i like to see more than to read and computers have many technology of intertainment more than a book
rarely these times i read books...though they are useful. _________________ "Blogger"
for references and school work, the computers and digital information networks have almost replaced all of my major resources. where i used to head to the library to look up some information in an encyclopedia, i now just head to wikipedia.
but for entertainment, there's still some magic in holding a book and just kicking back to read. for those of us bookworms out there, the tactile feel of a book and the freedom to read wherever you feel comfortable is bliss. this might also change tho, once sony's new ebook reader hits the market and starts picking up pace. _________________

Fictional books will perhaps still live on. There are many people (like myself) that enjoy reading books.
Its funny how we take books for granted. In many countries, books are important and can influence many people. Many writers have their work banned or are killed by their own government. _________________

depends on the crowd... I know older people are the biggest shoppers of books (ie, novels and such), so there's definitely a market out there for them. This is the same crowd of people who don't even know how to use a mouse, so you know there's no way they'd rely on the internet for reading materials.
plus to echo ddogt, reading in a comfy chair under a lamp or by the fire is a good way to relax... not to mention good thing to do during a power outage _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

Yes, I agree with that, Encyclopaedias and such information books would go extinct at some point, coz' using the internet resources like that of Wikipedia is much easier to use, You type in the information you wnat, then there it is, right in front of you, unlike using books, you have to browse the contents, Indexes and such which would take out much time. But Leisure books might not go off fashion, for example, the Harry Potter Series, though I haven't read a single one, has, or lets say, still popular among people, especially the young ones. reading a manga might be considered as "READING" but not completely, though it still is reading
Many books are not being even read, Info books that is, And we are not to just let it go off, Bibliographies, Ecyclos, History Books and such are supposed to be our benefit, after all some infos that are found in the net are coming from books, to sum it up, Reading won't go extinct, just the thirst for knowledge would decline, as the internet would give leisure more than that of Knowledge... It is my habit that once the PC is on with the connection to the net too, of course, I keep my studies, my projects in the background, while searching for the latest animes, mangas, Game reviews and such... Wikipedia, hmmm, I use it for searching MMORPG's reviews too, not much of those Physics kind of things. _________________ [IMG:300:100:3f69ff83fa]http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o196/takuto01/Sigv6.jpg[/img:3f69ff83fa]

i think that over time books will be obsolete in the sense that a book is a bunch of paper with words on them binded together. however on the internet you can download a manga or read a newsletter online. so eventually books will be gone but the information and stories within a book will be expressed through a new media.
I think books is still in vogue for these years and for the booklovers but
The internet now is giving more faster in details and facts. _________________
Well... no doubt that computer is much more efficient and easier to use and store much mroe information than a book. But a computer context can be changed easily; books cannot, that why many times a book is more reliable than a computer.

The way I see is that books and computers will merge into one that is superior to either one.
We'll probably be buying books in digital format and read it on a screen. Of course they'd have to have some futuristic material that can display the pages in a way that won't use too much electricity or strain our eyes.
This way, we can rid the inconvenience of having to carry around heavy books, and be able to access an entire library of books in the palm of our hands.
@ddogt
That ebook reader seems awfully close to what I envisioned.
So, I think the books becoming obsolete is a good thing in a way. Besides, it will reduce the number of trees being cut down to make paper. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img]

Yes book will probly become obsolete but it will not be soon. Even if you can find a lot of information if your searching for thing writed by expert on the subject the information is always more reliable in book or scientific mag. Like a lot of people I find it much more fun adn relaxing to read on paper but when we wont have any paper left I guess we wont have any other choice than to use a computer, if we didnt find anything to remplace wood for paper material. Anyway cpu are much more efficiently for storage.

When those people die would there be any room left for book ? Kids these days almost learn how to use a computer before stating reading. Whenn I speak to people under 18 most of them only read book when they are forced for class assigment or 1-2 book/ years at best.
