does this only happen when playing games/wow? has this been happening for awhile now? did anything drastically change before this began happening?

What is the resolution that you normally have on your desktop, and what is the in-game resolution? It sounds to me like you might have the resolution in the game a tad higher than your monitor can handle, so it just blacks out.

power problems arent about amps or volts, but more about watts, the actual power output of your supply. if you have extraneous parts (2nd cd/dvd drive, unused pci cards, or maybe even a harddrive you dont really need), try unplugging those and see what happens.

when my stuff overheats, i usually just get some really horrendous screen tears.

last time i had my screen res set too high, i think it did black out. didnt know how to fix it, so i had to take it in for service.

It'll depend on the motherboard. Knowing that it's a P4, I have some confidence that your motherboard should shutdown the system once it detects overheating on the CPU. Thus, my mentioning of overheating issue.

But tell us how much watts your power supply is capable of. 250W? 300W? 350W? Modern graphic cards are quite power hogs. And like ddog432 said, other stuff connected to the computer uses electricity, USB even. Your power supply unit may not be giving enough power to share to all of the devices.

So check how much wattage it uses first. If we know you have plenty of watts to supply, then we could deduce the problem to overheating or something else.

Your power supply sounds like it should be able to handle it, unless it is of a really cheap variety. Does your computer shutdown right when you get into the game or after you've played it a bit?

If it shuts down right when you first start the game up, I suspect that the resolution needs to be turned lower.

If it shuts down after you've been playing for a bit, then it is most likely overheating.

it shuts down at the beginning of the game most of the time sometimes i can play for like 10 min but i tried lowering the resolution and it still shuts down. so im guessing its my cpu overheating
