maybe this should go in the Intros/Personals section, but for now I'll start it off here (unless a mod prefers it moved).
Anyway, a couple friends and I are really adament about going to Japan on one of those exchange programs (JET, NOVA, GEOS, etc) where you get sent there to teach english to people for about a year.
Does anyone have any knowledge or advice or recommendations or even any horror stories to share? I've heard bad things about NOVA, so I'm looking at JET (Japan Exchange & Teaching Programme). They cater to public schools, so I'll get to live my dream of being a japanese teacher, hahaha... (people here know that I love school-daze comedies... I'm gonna be Onizuka!!!, heehee).
JET doesn't really let us pick where we go (they send you "where your skills are most needed"... blah blah blah), but I have my heart set on Fukuoka... one of the friends wants Sapporo, go figure... oh well, maybe I can visit him for a week during break or something. The other friend doesn't care, she just wants to go to Japan.
Who here lives in Japan? If I could move close-by to an A-Source member (or even staff/mod), that would be super awesome. Even if not nearby, I'd love to meet up sometime (I'll be watching you in your sleep... wah haw haw haw!!)
I'm trying to get on board for the next JET program, but the application season doesn't even start until late this summer and then even so, the actual departure date isn't until July 30, 2008. Looks like I have plenty of time. If anyone else is considering doing this, let me know and like I said above, if you have any info, whether good or bad, please share.

Yeah, nova is world known, but they are too strict with the way they operate.
Jet is good, they actually assign u to a school.
i havent heard much negativity with JET, but dont worry, there will be some.
however, they only employ those with degrees.
Im going with a private company called Peppy Kids Club on a working holiday visa.
i start on the 7 of May . a few days after i turn 19!.
anyways, try the small private institutes. there are thousands in japan.
a good site i can reccommend is that u google 'Dave's ESL cafe'.
english companies from all over the world advertise on this site. there are spots in japan, china, korea etc.
both degree and non degree required jobs.
hope that helps ya _________________ [img:567:138:151453bb6b]http://www.anime-source.com/upload/uploadFiles/wahagifsda.gif[/img:151453bb6b]

eek. Well, luckily I never expect anything to be perfect, so I can deal with some shortcomings.

hmmm, no doubt, but will they provide ammenities and other support for foreigners? I know JET and the other big firms have deals for apartments and bill/certification assistance, plus helplines to answer questions about culture/custom and local areas.
how long are you going for? a year? Are they putting you in a public school or is like a cram-school or corporate training gig? Where do you live now? (don't tell me the Soviet Loli Republic really exists... I'd have to run over there right now, haha)

thanks for the link you gave me, Leoxjm. I'll browse through it... always fun to read other people's stories.
EDIT - LOL... this thing is funny... good thing I've already been properly warned about "Kancho"!!! _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

um... its called a school, but like, parents send their kids there in the afternoons and i practice conversational english with them and activities and whatnot.
i wouldnt say its a cramschool however, but more of a wait...maybe it is a cramschool.
im now living in australia, the soviet loli repubilc is like eden, or the chamber of guf, it exists somewhere on earth, but no one knows where >.>
ill let u know as soon as i get info on my accommodation, then we can meet up and go to hostess bars

sounds like a cramschool to me. Ugh, that will prolly suck... I don't think the kids would WANT to be there. Try enrolling for JET along with it. The session I'm doing starts July 30th 2008, so you should be done with your first program by then. We'd get to attend the same seminars and stuff... maybe even work at schools close enough

we should start an expedition to set out and find it, heehee

or maid cafes!!! hahahahah... yeah, definitely. If we're both in the country at the same time, we'll definitely find a weekend or something to meet up. You're most likely being sent to Tokyo, right? or do you not know yet?

Stick out both of your index fingers. Put your hands together so the index fingers are combined. Then interlace all your other fingers together. Now find someone to annoy (usually male teachers). Sneak up behind them and quickly poke them in the butt/nuts with your two index fingers. Yeah...... japanese kids are strange... you've been warned. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

I think metal plates under clothing are a good idea.
that is what WW2 airmen used in flack jackets.
It's lighter than full plate, but atleast you know where they will be aiming ahead of time. _________________ If violence isn't the answer, you didn't use enough.

Watch out for Tokyo's main street Xeno~
we never talked much but I don't want you getting lost.
Tokyo's "area" guide maps are always upside down. As well Street names points in 4 direction, so if ur going to ask for direction As for interections instead of a "street"
Gon ba deh~ ^^ _________________ [IMG:400:150:03f161352f]http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/2235/kitaassignaturejz2.jpg[/img:03f161352f]

well, most of these programs will pay for your flight, take care of your visa and get you a rail pass. I hope you'll consider doing it when I do so we can compare notes, share stories and meet up during the seminars in Tokyo ... (as long as you have your bachelor's degree by July 2008, you qualify) _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
unfortunately, not mine. i dont think.
well, because im only eligible for a working holiday visa, because i dont hold a degree, i guess i gotta sort that out myself.
i was thinking about getting a rail pass, but the company reimburses me the amount that i use to travel to work.
but then again, i guess i dont have enough money for one =_=
i plan to stay in and around the area they put me.
sharing stories sounds great, but depends on when and if im still in japan.
hmm....seminars u say....how about we meet up at a cafe ala maid? _________________ [img:567:138:151453bb6b]http://www.anime-source.com/upload/uploadFiles/wahagifsda.gif[/img:151453bb6b]

if you're in Japan between July 30 2008 and July 30 2009, then sure. JET requires us to come to Tokyo every other month or so for training tips and othe junk, so when I'm in town, I'll get in touch with you.
Can't you do JET after your other program ends? Like I said... it doesn't even start for another 15 months. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
