Wah, you make it sound as if they only select participants once a year! Because if that's the case, then I have to wait till March 2008 just to apply! @___@;
Although you said it varies by season, so I hope the next batch selection will start this September/October (as you've said). Meaning if I get to apply this ~BER season, then counting 5 months, I'll be in Japan this January/February. *gasp* That's too soon. And too optimistic!
*drops back to Earth, reels in senses, and faces reality*
I have to work hard for this. I have to get a temp job to finance myself. I need to tell me friend. I have to call the Japanese Embassy. I have to eat. _________________ EX-mod

they take about 4,000 from the US, maybe about 100 from the Philippines. I'll dig up the numbers in a second.
EDIT - wow, I was way off on both numbers.
US = 2,759
Philippines = 2
haha... well, AFAIK, there's no limit, so maybe a low number for your country is a good thing... less competition ^___^

I said it varies by season? If I did, I meant not by much, a few days at the most. Remember, the JET year is always August to August since that's when the students are on summer break and it's easier to switch teachers. And even though the DEADLINE is late March-ish, they become available in late September (again, in the US at least... lemme check for sure, brb).
EDIT - the timeline chart isn't year specific and is kinda vague, but it'll give you an idea
It does say down bottom you have to call your embassy for exact dates
The application deadline is late November in most countries... man, seems so far away, yet at the same time, it doesn't. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

that's good though. It's probably not that they only OFFERED 2 spots, I'll bet it just means only 2 other people were interested. I'm sure they'd want more people to go, so if you ask me, your chances are pretty good.
It's all about thinking positive. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
I think for once in my whole existence, my optimism is a bit used-up for now. I've been super hyped up about the Monbusho scholarship (which has a low passing rate), the Peppy Kids Club (which I found out that the recruitment center is in another country), my job applications (which I haven't heard from yet), the Nihongo classes I've been taking (which I've been warned about not doing the assignments and for being too noisy), my new fitness routine (which I haven't been able to to do properly for a month now) and now the JET program (which recruited a couple of citizens from my country).
*sigh*
Okay deep breaths, calm nerves and choco-covered mallows...
.................
Right-o, I'll go pass this idea up to my friend and my family and ask their opinion. I've seen that the deadline is till November this year right? Wow, that's a long time from now. I'll have to dig up for other valuable infos about this and other related articles that might help me in my application (if the Monbusho doesn't pull through). _________________ EX-mod
with peppy, the recruit centre may be in another country, but i think there are recruiters in every country.
like, with me, there was no real official centre, my recruiter was a teacher from up in queensland, some international university.
im almost certain theres a recruiter in ur country nekko!
but all the same nekko, GOOD LUCK! _________________ [img:567:138:151453bb6b]http://www.anime-source.com/upload/uploadFiles/wahagifsda.gif[/img:151453bb6b]

Sorry for the double post but, I've been reading up a bit on Gaijinsmash and one post was about when he quit the ALT business. His school was a really shitty one. It sounds like the ALT business is a hit and miss one with the schools. And one of the commenters mentioned that in JET other teachers can't really complain about you and get you in trouble but in professional ALT they can and do. o_O'

Just a little question about those acceptance numbers, you sure there isn't an OVERALL quota? Like...8000 in total, not from country? o_O
oh sorry, I'm a little late to replying to this...
I'm not saying that it's not since, like any government program, it's subject to budget constraints. But if there is a quota, it's probably really high. The MEXT seems really devoted to this program and they really want to use it to highest advantage since speaking English is so important to them. Remember, there are thousands of schools in Japan and it's their goal to get a JET ALT in every one of them... some already have multiple.
So anyway, I dug this thread up because application season is about to begin. I have to start digging up my material. I still haven't told my boss that I'm leaving next year, but most of my coworkers know (I told them not to tell my boss, haha). Anyone here still thinking about going?
right now it's still on 2007 mode, but the 2008 should be up soon. You can use the 2007 application requirements as a general rubric for the time being. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

wow, I haven't updated this thread in forever!! And I have much to share with all the lovely peoples of the A-Source forums ^___^
(quick summary for those who don't want to read the whole thread - this is the info thread for people who want to teach English in Japan (Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs)))
I applied at Interac/Selnate, which is another variation of the previously-discussed JET Programme. Rumor around the ALT-world is that a lot of JET contracts are being shifted to Interac contracts, which means that even though JET pays better and has cushier benefits, your chances of getting a position and maintaining your job are better with Interac.
So anyway, the day after I got the big fat DENIED email from JET, I ran over to Interac's website and threw my name in there. I got a response within a few days telling me I passed the phase 1 screening and now they were asking me to fill out an even more extensive application with questions about why I wanted to teach and live in Japan. That was phase 2, which was quickly followed up with phase 3, which was a phone screening to see if I was good enough to be bothered for an interview. I was told I'd hear back from them "by the end of March."
Well, the end of March came and went, and even with a few emails prodding for a status update two weeks in April, I wasn't getting anything. I more or less just settled on the fact that I probably wasn't going to get a chance here and accepted that fate. Of course, life likes to tease me into insanity, so much like it always happens, the moment I stopped caring was the moment I get the email inviting me to the invitation seminar. So this coming weekend, I will be in New York taking grammar tests and demonstration lessons. They want me to incorporate as much Japanese as possible... luckily it's all at the elementary-school level (numbers, colors, days of the week), which I can definitely handle.
So that's my update. I haven't updated this thread since September, so maybe some other ALTs or eikawa teachers have joined us since then... or maybe even some Japanese residents. I'll post a summary of what happens at the seminar/interview when I return.
Wish me luck, minna-san!! _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

What will happen to You when You're in Japan? Will You still have time for A-S?
if anything, this will be better for A-Source because I can blog continually about my adventures and the craziness that will become my day-to-day life. I'll be able to report on many different aspects of anime from the Japanese standpoint, mainly through advertising... like CLANNAD canned-bread!!!!
So worry not, minna-genki... I'll be hanging around here for a while ^___^ _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

Well, never thought I'd see this thread again. Good luck Xeno, though I am sad to inform you that I have more or less given up any ambition for this myself as I'm not even in university anymore.

haha, well, this has always been on my mind, I just haven't had any real need to update it lately.
The latest news for everyone... the interview in NYC went well. I hope to find out if I got the job or not sometime this week, or if not, then early next week.
There have been a few blog entries posted with more information available. If I get the job, expect more consistant updates there.
Good luck Xeno, though I am sad to inform you that I have more or less given up any ambition for this myself as I'm not even in university anymore.
aww, sorry to hear that. I hope something better or more solid has come up for you. I'm willing to meet up with anyone who wants to come to Japan, even offer crash space, so if you still want to see the country, it's something to consider.
