i HIGHLY recommend that u go to BOOK-OFF, HARD-OFF, HOUSE-OFF and OFFICE-OFF.
I'm interested on those stores too. Are they 'types' of stores? Or 'names' of stores?
xeno> Now that you mention it, NOVA's image looked really bad based from what I've read here. But then the incidents really were not caused by the group itself. But just to make sure, I'll just take either JET or the Peppy Kids Stuff.
Although I'm getting second thoughts about the whole "being a teacher" thing. Maybe from experience, but 'some' of my elementary teachers cry during class... Kinda traumatizing. And I can't seem to even imagine myself 'teach' LOL~
Wait... JET and the PKC pays for the plane tickets right? _________________ EX-mod

I'm pretty sure they pay for their tickets, atleast I think JET does. Hopefully JET doesn't change too much in the next few years. So atleast then I know what to expect when I apply.
I was thinking before of getting a whole minor in Japanese studies but I'm thinking of replacing that with a minor in poli sci and just taking a few electives in Japanese. Any ideas on this? Cause I'm most likely gonna be a teacher for profession and a major in history and a minor in Japanese only provides me with one teachable, I'd need two. Should I still go for that Jap minor?

they cry? even the men teachers? haha Must just be some job-stress since they work from like 7am to 5pm 6 days a week. Luckily the JETs only gotta be there from like 10am to 2pm or something like that. It's only like 4 hours a day, I'm pretty sure

I'm 99% sure that JET does. Having to pay for a plane ticket takes away all the incentive. If I have to pay myself, I might as well just goes for a few weeks on a vacation... and I'm sure the Education Ministry realizes that, so I'm pretty sure they do pay for your tickets to get there.
Transportation once you're there is another thing I'm wondering about. Their website should be coming out with more info soon... I would think.

that's the kinda thing you should ask your advisor. Teaching requirements differ from state to state, and depending on WHAT you want to teach, your minor selection could go either way. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
My friend and I are really excited about the Peppy Kids Club teaching program~~
Kinda anti-climatic though, the recruitment centers are on other countries... USA, Australia, Canada, Japan... *sigh*
Does that mean we have to go there first? Do we need to migrate? Or can we just submit our applications from 'our' country? What about the interview???

@Xeno, hehe states my friend? You need only read my name to see the error there. But I sort of talked with an "advisor" today. I talked with my law teacher about teachables and such. He said that I only needed 18 units to get a second teachable (which is basically either 6 one term courses or 3 full year courses) and that it differs from teacher college to teacher college. Like he got his in Buffalo, so I don't think he needed two teachables. I can still get my Jap minor yay!

though Ani can answer this better, my assumption is you'll have to go to the interview location. A friend of a friend joined JET a few months ago, but the closest recruitment office was a couple hundred miles from her. Luckily for myself, I believe there's one in Boston, just an hour away.
grrr... don't abandon the JET program!! haha, we need to all join at the same time so we can hang out in Tokyo during the seminars!!! MAID CAFES!!! nooooooooooooooooooooooes!!!

questio is teaching in japan a very stressfull job????
what job isn't? It's all about your outlook on the situation. If you like kids, get along with them well, feel confident about what you're doing and are enjoying your time in Japan, I'm sure anyone will enjoy the experience.
Of course, I can't speak through experience myself. I'll let you know in 2 years, haha.
As to what Megane said about the teachers crying and the reason why I think you're bringing it up , that's probably because to them, teaching is a JOB. Those people aren't in a foreign country taking in all the wonderments of a new culture. They're just there to work and get through the day. I'm sure being a JET or eikawa teacher will become draining about a few years once the elation wears off. Plus, they work like 9-12 hours a day while JETs and foreign teachers work 1-5 hours. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

AHH! Xeno you must keep this thread alive! On behalf of the ...three other people? I request an update.
hooray, people are interested!
well, the only update I can report at this very minute is that the JET website has put up some more material to answer more questions. I haven't had a chance to look through it yet, but if you guys wanna read ahead and comment back here with some of the interesting stuff, the website again is www.jetprogramme.org .... look under the Publications Section.
hmmm... oh, and I do have something more of a tip than info to share. Some friends and I are planning on making a whole bunch of videos to share with our students. We're going to shoot little movies showing our towns and typical businesses like banks and grocery stores. Maybe even film some conversations that might happen in places like those. We're going to do them every 3 months so we can show the different seasons. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

I take it that new stuff posted was the June 2007 CLAIR newsletter thingy?
That video idea is interesting, make sure you capture the very essence of the Bostonian accent for those little Japanese kids. Then again, maybe Bostonians don't have that thick of an accent. I never heard much of an accent from my relatives in Boston. o_O EITHER WAY, post a video or two eh?

there are a bunch of handbooks and stuff on there that I hadn't seen before. Maybe I missed them before, I dunno.

haha, yeah, I have an accent, but it's probably not very thick. We don't say our "r"s, so that whole "pahk yoh cah in Hahvajd yahd" thing is true. I don't notice when people speak WITH their accents cause it's "normal," but if someone speaks withOUT it, then I usually notice instantly.
Videos will definitely be posted ^___^ _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

I have NO idea what that aphk thing was.
that would be a good ole-fashioned typo
>>technomo: haha, well I hope the students would respect me either way, but I know watching videos is more fun than just being read to from a book. I know for myself that I'd rather watch 10 videos than read one book. Plus, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video must be worth like a million words. ^___^
I also plan to take videos while I'm in Japan for my own memories and to have interesting stuff to show everyone else. Hopefully I won't be seen as odd for bringing a video camera to work with me, haha.
You had to teach BEFORE you moved on with college? Sheesh, most I had to do was become an intern at a police department but that wasn't until my last year. Though, in retropsect, it probably would have been better to have the experience first and THEN take the classes. Oh well. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)
