>>technomo: haha, well I hope the students would respect me either way, but I know watching videos is more fun than just being read to from a book. I know for myself that I'd rather watch 10 videos than read one book. Plus, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video must be worth like a million words. ^___^

I also plan to take videos while I'm in Japan for my own memories and to have interesting stuff to show everyone else. Hopefully I won't be seen as odd for bringing a video camera to work with me, haha.

You had to teach BEFORE you moved on with college? Sheesh, most I had to do was become an intern at a police department but that wasn't until my last year. Though, in retropsect, it probably would have been better to have the experience first and THEN take the classes. Oh well.

Intern at a police department....get any doughnuts? Sorry, I had to. Razz

I'm likely going into teaching, so maybe this teaching in Japan thing will look good on a resume. "Hey...it says you were already a teacher here?" "YEP! I already beat these other suckers hands down!" "In Japan..." "Yep!" "...step outside."

At any rate, I was looking at what classes to pick for uni and noticed that the only Japanese course (a language one) for first year was an all year one. Yay, Japanese intensive studying for everyone!

I was the doughnut and coffee person... everyone else had bagels and tea... it's the new stereotype. Oh, and I learned don't ever order to eat that won't fit easily into your hand. I spilt coffee all over my lap my very first day.

Hey Ani, how's things?

gruesome... indeed. Although, I wouldn't hold that against NOVA, seems like it could have happened to ANY foreign teacher.

haha, well, surely a black-eye for the company, but again, it's not something that was CAUSED by NOVA.

The controversies I'm more worried about are in regards to contract issues, weird deductions, fees, unhelpful resident assistants, stupid course planning... stuff like that.

ah, interesting. I'm hoping JET does that. I'm still trying to find the official answer on that.

Any interesting stories to share in regards to your classes, students, and whatnot? Have you made any new friends? What's the area you're living in like.

Send me photos, dammit!!! hahaha

is that like a chain of stores or is that like a type of store? Sounds like a quick way to furnish a house. What did you bring with you from home? Prolly not much, right?

highly recommend coming here first!

stop tempting me, haha. Well, I would hop a plane to visit, but my vacation time is running out and I need what I have left for conventions. I dunno, I'll put a fare-watch on Tokyo and Fukuoka to see if anything affordable pops up. Although... I still need to get a passport.

I think I pay about 25% on my income taxes now, so this is actually a break for me.

things are good xeno.

yeah, i heard on the news and the paper that nova, along with a care faciltiy will not be allowed to renew contracts after 2008 i heard. the government imposed the restrictions because NOVA didnt refund money for students missed classes and some other things.

you work 7 days a week though? Sounds interesting, though the name is somewhat awkward, haha. I know, I know... "don't judge a book by it's cover." As for myself, I want the full school experience. I want to be surrounded by kids and witness the activities they go through. I might take up private tutoring in the evenings for people of all ages. That might be a good way to curb boredom, meet new people and earn myself a little spending cash.

nah, every fortnight i work 10 days. so in one week i might work 4 days, but the next i will have to work 6. but still, i get 2 days off a week, just not always sat and sun.

not much, apart from the occasional kids that get out of hand.
but ive been doing this for a month now, and ive got techniques developed to combat childhood overenergetic ness.

sweet f%ck all.
pretty much what i do now, find internet and attach myself to it. and like a leech, suck it for all its worth.
otherwise, since i got a bike now, i ride for as long as i feel like.
or i just go to stores like toys r us, book off, house off etc.

well, i guess the enterprise is called -OFF.
they are every where as far as i can tell, in my city, there are like 8 -OFF stores. so its fairly safe to say they are everywhere.

sigh...yes.
i just got my pay cheque the other day, and out of 230,000 yen, im taxed 41,000yen a month. 400 bucks gone....A MONTH!
but this is because im on a working holiday visa contract.
for degree holders, u get taxed about 5-8% of ur income.

that's pretty typical. My pay for the month here where I work:

$2,217.30 - 723.74 (for taxes and insurances) = $1593.56

You made twice as much as me and were still deducted less than me.

i get a schedule a few days before the next month.
but i have to call my supervisor every friday to confirm any changes that may have taken place in the next week after my copy was printed.

the training covers and gives techiniques. training classes with exp teachers also helps cuz u see their techniques, and meetings and talking to the other teachers really gives u good ideas.
usually what i do is click my fingers to get their attention, and then shuffle the kids around if they still mess around. ei: put boys next to girls to make them quiet.
otherwise, ill crack my knuckles and that usually scares them. Very Happy
but now, its been a month since i started, so the kids are remembering me and respect me. its just the first time they see u, they try to test ur boundaries and that. but just stay firm and incontrol.

yeah, im living alone.
most places are only one resident. but there are few places where couples stay.
the apartments are in standard buildings with other normal japanese people. just not always near to the other workers. the company gets whatever apartments it can find and would be affordable to the employee.
thats why im so far from my co workers, who are all in the same building =_=

btw, xeno, how come there hasnt been any new images for the anime contest?

sorry Ken, I meant to answer this in my post I made a few days ago.

As I explained earlier in the thread, Kancho is like the Japanese version of a wedgie. Basically, the kids will try to "invade your space"... heehee... which means that they sneak up behind you and poke you in the butt as hard as they can. They also want to see how "well endowed" foreign men as in their package-area... and with girls, the chest area.

Beware the Kancho!!

yes you did, you bastard. What do you do with the rest of your day? Probably not easy to travel too far since you gotta be back for the next lesson.

nice, that's cool. I hope I get something similiar... I plan on doing lots of traveling. I'm sure I'll just be working the regular school calendar or the same days/hours each week.

ah see... that's the stuff we wanna hear. ::takes out notebook, writes everything down:: "smack kids around, laugh in their faces, steal their lunch money, Ani says it works like a charm" wakata! Very Happy

I'm getting an idea of how JET works. It'll be pretty much the same... random apartments in random places. Only slight chance I'd be near another JET co-worker. Well, living alone sounds like a good prospect. I like my privacy, though it must be easier to make friends with people you're rooming with. Oh well, less risk of being stuck with someone I hate that would totally ruin the experience for me.

Oh your goodness Ani~!! I. N. V. U...................

Anyways, just popped in to announce I'm still alive, but I'm a bit frustrated/depressed right now. I wasn't accepted into my dream job, and then my next-to-a-dream-job application went down the drain too... (they were offering me a 200 USD a month salary.)

Argh Japan, what I wouldn't give.....

Also, it was announced that my application has been accepted by the Embassy and that I'm qualified to take the examinations for the scholarship (3 years study in Japan), so I went and took the Math, English and Nihongo test last Wednesday. I was able to answer 3/4 of the inhumanely impossible Japanese Mathematics, perfected the kindergarten English, and did so-so on Nihongo.

I'll probably know the results next week or so and see if I'm qualified to go to the next screening process: The Interview. (They said that they'll only call those who passed... *dies*)

X_X; wish me luck guys~! *crosses fingers, arms, legs, eyes*

aww, I'm sorry to hear that.... 200USD a month? That's ummm... not a lot of money.

guess JET is looking shinier and shinier now, heehee

Yeah, JET seems super duper awesome now. Considering my options and affinity with the said country... the job's becoming a goal for me now too~ Haha, although it sounds a bit too good to be true. ^__^;

I'm trying to get my friend to try it out too~ We've both applied and took the exam for the Monbusho. And she's preparing for the worst so she's ordered me to look for alternatives. I think JET is the best chance for us though. I'm going to go look for the schedules and application guidelines. When's the application deadline date~?

yay!! I want you to do JET, too, heeheehee

Applications vary by season, but essentially the schedule is:
September - October: Applications begin (not sure when the deadline is)
February - March: Interviews
April: Hear whether you got the position or wait-listed
June - July: Pre-program gatherings to meet other people and get basic info
August: Leave for Japan

Kenadian wrote:

that's exactly what it is... and no, it's not illegal. You're talking about a country where porn is found everywhere and people read it openly on the subways. Based on the blogs I've read, it seems like older-man/younger-girl relationships aren't even frowned upon.

I highly suggest you read the blogs at gaijinsmash.net (start at the bottom of the archive) for a glimpse at what to epxpect (although he doesn't talk much about the program or work itself).

I went to the website of the Embassy of Japan in my country and found this schedule for the JET Program:

SCHEDULE FROM APPLICATION TO DEPARTURE

March 30, 2007:
Application deadline
First stage of screening process (written applications)

April 2007:
Second stage of screening process (interviews)
Announcement of short-list candidates and alternates

May 2007: Notification of selection and placement

July 2007: Pre-departure orientation, etc.

August 5, 2007: Arrival in Japan and start of contract

I'm quite surprised at how fast the processing is in comparison to the Monbukagakusho Scholarship program, which takes more than a year from application to finally reaching Japan. In JET, it takes only 4 months or so.

Well the deadline has passed though... so I guess I have to wait for the next batch. And since this batch's selection will end this August, I think the application date will be just like when you said it will be: September/October. Which is very AWESOME timing, considering that the results of the Monbugakusho screenings will also be out during that time.

If ever we don't make it to the scholarship, I guess we'll apply for this one. Either JET or find another scholarship... *sigh* I really really really want to experience Japan (most probably not as a tourist though).

First stage of screening process (written applications)

ah, wow, that's later than I thought. Maybe it's later for you guys since they expect far less people than from America and Canada, plus you're closer to Japan.

Quote:
If ever we don't make it to the scholarship, I guess we'll apply for this one. Either JET or find another scholarship... *sigh* I really really really want to experience Japan ([i]most probably not as a tourist though).

doing the next JET would be better anyway since that's when I'll be going, plus you're going to want more than 30 days to prepare. Remember, we're all going to the maid cafes together (that includes you, Ani-san... make sure you get a few days off to head into Tokyo in early August 2008) ^___^

If you want to impress the interview panel, start doing stuff now. Do research on a couple cities and on the school system (hey, if that means by watching anime, then sure, it counts, haha. I'll have an article on Japanese public schools ready hopefully by tomorrow). What I'm doing is making a bunch of videos of American-life so I'll have material to bring with me when I go teach. And as an added bonus, that signals to the interviewers "wow, not only does this guy really want to get into the program, but he's prepared!" Instant gold star right there Very Happy
