i wish i could do JET after my program ends, but id rather not. i figured id leave teaching for a few years, find a job, and then one day take up a degree and wound back in japan in probably 8 to 10 years time.
as far as i know, JET only takes those with degrees or higher, and at the moment, im too lazy to commit myself to doing another course.

My graduation's this May, a degree in Systems Software Engineering (do I qualify in the JETS, etc thing?)
Which reminds me, I'm gonna apply to a Professional Training Program (Monbukagakusho) given by the embassy. It means 3 years of studying in Japan, and I picked 'Design' as my course. So if ever you guys will be there while I'm there, I could join you with the rendezvous. ^__^ _________________ EX-mod

Tokyo's "area" guide maps are always upside down. As well Street names points in 4 direction, so if ur going to ask for direction As for interections instead of a "street"

haha Tokyo was hell, i was lost while searching for the hostel..... took me 3 hr hr to figure out the location..... >_< its better to have a friend in Tokyo, they can guide ya around.... bah at least i reside in Fukuoka, much smaller than Tokyo....

This makes me scared to go to japan ....... but I really want to go some time in my life and there are jobs there that are in my feld. TT.TT I wounder if Ill go or not. But on a good note Im learning the japanisse

I don't think they'd care. As long as you speak English, you qualify. Most of the people in the JET are from the US, but they do have quite a bit from other nations too.
Though you just LIVE in Australia... you're not actually Australian... oh well, if they ask for race, just check the box to ignore the question.

I'm hoping to play the "innocent, cute sexy American boy who needs a sweet, cute japanese girl to show him around the country"-card when I arrive. I'm naturally shy, but given that I will be so dependant on making friends immediately, I'm sure I can make some fast friendships.

nice, that's the city I'm hoping to be sent to. What's the area like? I know nothing about it except it has 1.2 million people, it's on the West Coast of Kyushu island and it's a great place to live. Tell me more, tell me more... heehee, I'll be knocking on your door in 15 months. ^___^

I'm going because it's a once-in-a-lifetime kinda thing. I'll go there on vacation if I must, but why spend so much money on a 2-week trip when I can stay for an entire year? I don't know much japanese, just what I pick up from anime. This learning A fouren language CD is pretty helpful. but I also cant find any books to learn from so who knows whats better. I can ask were stuff is though

And about the beaches... well I live in a tropical archipelago so I'm quite used to seeing sunny weather, warm breezes, and white sand. Once I go to Japan I'd very much like to see snow. Hee hee~
Anyway, you guys should look up at the Mobukagakusho scholarships~! It's free transportation, free tuition, free lodging, plus you'll get 134,000 YEN allowance per month!

ugh, snow... yuck. Living in New England all my life (where, yes, it snows even in April and May), I'll tell you all you need to know about snow:
The Good - it's pretty The Bad - it's cold, it's wet, it's slippery, it's a pain to shovel, it's cold, it gets stuck in your shoes/boots which makes you colder and wetter, and when it freezes, it is impossible to shovel... and it's cold
Believe me, after your first blizzard, you're never going to want to see it again

though the benefits you mention are enticing, I don't know what subject I would want to study. I already have a degree, so it's not a major concern of mine right at the moment. The scholarship starts right about when your JET starts (from what I've read anyway). Flight to Japan will be on April 2008 right after the screening of documents, the entrance exams, interviews and probably to give us time to get our passports and college student visas.
Once there, we will be given 1 year Japanese studies, because the school we'll be assigned to will be conducted in pure Nihongo. This includes the 3 year professional training of the course you chose. So it's probably up till 2011 or 2012... Wow, didn't realize it'd be that long.
AND I LOVE COLDNESS! My bro used to argue with me and the aircon (we're in the same room), and how I always open the windows to let cool air in, etc. So cold snow is just what I've wanted it to be~ Of my 20 years living in the tropics, heat is what I wanted the least.
Well studying is kind of an experience. The years you'll stay there and the free schooling you'll get... And what do you mean you don't know what to study?? You do have something you like to do don't you? Me I like art/graphics, probably a bit of programming.

ah, so we will be there around the same time. You're trying to go up to Hokkaido I'm guessing. My other friend wants to go to Sapporo, so I'll have to work something out, but we'll definitely meet up somewhere. Maybe you, I and Ani can meet in Tokyo sometime (I'll be there for some seminars and training sessions plenty of times).

well, I hope to go back to school later in life, but after 13 years of public school and 5 years of college, I'm sick of sitting in a classroom.... so... ummmm... I'm going to Japan to.... ummmm.... sit in a classroom.... argh!! well, I'll be doing the teaching this time, and since I enjoy teaching, it will be different.
I'm still looking for info on Fukuoka... especially from people who live there or at least visited. I read that Kyushu people like to drink alot. I've actually spoken with a teacher who had Jet program members as their assistants and from what I've heard, you don't really do much teaching especially if it's your first year in the Jet program. The teachers who you are assigned to really do all the teaching, and your job as their assistant is basically assisting in classroom exercises, copying papers, and correcting papers. If you are hired as an assistant, I would get my hopes up too high about actually teaching a class yourself. The teacher I spoke with only referred to one school, so other schools may have different systems in place.
Also in regards to the fact that the Jet program hires Westerners more than Asians, my friend, who is the teacher I talked with, said that Japan is trying to divert from the mindset that only Westerners are capable of speaking English well. Because of that, many schools really want Asians, who are native English speakers, to help change the mindset that only Westerners are capable of speaking English well. I'm not sure about the acceptance rates, but I'm going to apply when I graduate regardless of whether they have a bias or not.

yeah, that's my understanding of how it works and that's fine with me. I don't know much Japanese, so if someone were to ask me a question, I'd need to explain it to them in a way they could understand it. At least if there is a primary teacher in the room, I can defer to them if I get held up.

in that chart I linked earlier, it's noticeable that about 85% of the people in the program are from America and Europe, but there's still a chance for Easterners. Oh well, no harm in applying either way.

what's the matter? Don't want the full xeno-experience? JSYK, it's mid-April and it's snowing outside right now... expected 8 inches in some areas not far from here.

haha, good question. Even though it seems more appropriate for me, I didn't want to do the "cliche" touristy destinations. Though I would love to see Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Sapporo and the like (and I will, I plan on being all over), I wanted to go somewhere kinda unheard of... just to say "yeah I went there." Also, my friend is going to Sapporo and another friend was in Okinawa, so I wanted my own unique area of the country. Like I said, I plan on visiting all 4 corners, but at least if I'm living in an area seperated from my friends, we can all come together in the end and compare notes on the various lifestyles of the nation.
I have been reading up on Kyushu Island and Fukuoka City & Prefecture and aside from the issue of my being a non-drinker in an area where it seems that drinking is the big social activity in the area, it looks like I might adapt well... well, hopefully. I plan on blogging my whole trip and taking a million photos, so don't worry, I'll be taking A-Source with me, haha.
Anyway, Fukuoka is just an idea. I don't get to pick my location... not even sure if they accept preferences, but it seems to be an area I'd like to go to. Of course, actually living closer to my friends would be better since we can experience the country and culture better, but this is my one chance to be 10000% independant and I really want to test myself out with this new challenge.
PS... watashi no okasan is 10000% against the idea... she thinks I'll get bored of the idea before time for paperwork even sets in. Oh well... guess I'll have to prove her wrong.
