xeno> Hmmm... the xeno-experience sounds pretty good right now. April's too hot for me, it even reached 38.6° celsius once. But I'm pretty much within the aircon-ed classrooms most of the time, so I don't feel the heat.

Shibuya is another shopping and entertainment district situated in the west of Tokyo, my friends tell me it's the Fashion Capital of Japan (maybe). And since I have relatives there, I figured it'd be best for a first-timer like me to be somewhere within their vicinity. Although my brother favors Sapporo, he saw it featured on some article~

do it!! haha. If at the very least, apply. If they tell you "no", then they tell you "no." Better to apply and be denied than it is to spend your whole life wondering what could have been. That's my philosophy on life, at least.

Right on! That's what I told myself even when I was planning on applying for the scholarship. Though I fear the possibility of having to be disappointed, right after you have planned and thought the things you'd do once you get there.

The possibility scares me sometimes... Shocked

Hm, good luck xeno, I plan on going myself with the JET program sometime. Though that is literally years off, I only graduate from HIGH SCHOOL this year so I've got a lot ahead of me. I'm probably gonna be better off than you though, considering the university I plan on going to has an entire minor in Japanese studies (not just language, history et al is included).

Kenadian> Haha, you remind me of myself. I was in highschool (or earlier) when I found myself interested in Japan, and my plans were not to take effect till after college... which is just a couple of weeks away... *awwww*

My Japanese studies will start this week and will be for 10-12 months, depends on their schedule. By the time it's done, it's off to Japan for me (flight's on April next year).

I can finally hear the gears turning in my life. Huzzah~

haha, at least you're getting close. I tend to plan every aspect of my life so far in advance. I just hope I don't lose sight of my goal (my mom already thinks I'll give up on the idea before it happens).

I still need to think about what I'm going to do with all my furniture, my car... my cat!! Who knows... I might not ever come back from Japan, haha.. but even so, a year is a long time to ask someone to babysit a cat.

it's a wonderful feeling, desu ne?

nice, I'll be sure to blog all my activities once I head over there, so that will give you a heads up as to what the experience is like.

I've been reading the editorial blog over at GaijinSmash.net and am getting a good feel for what the JET experience is like. I worked with little kids when I dated a girl whose mother ran a daycare center out of their house, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Kids are so funny... but they can also be incredibly sweet. This story made me tear up a little... okay... a lot. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

The name of that site confuses me. Wasn't gaijin supposed to be a derogative term? Or atleast that being the slang version (can't remember the full word).

I'll still read the blog though. Razz

EDIT: Hey that's a pretty good story actually. We need more people like that little Moeko in the world. Very Happy

Update: I found out they've already started classes last Monday, they said I should enroll this Wednesday (which is tomorrow) or it'd be too late. So I will.

The Jap classes will be of 8 short courses from Elementary 1 to Intermediate 4... or was it 5? Anyway the whole Nihongo training will be for a year~ So I've basically covered up the 'waiting' time till my study in Japan next year.

xeno> Awwww.... what an awfully touching story. Makes me wanna do teaching instead.

But I want to feel the life of being a Jap student first, then I'll go do teaching. So that means another year in Japan for me.

Yey.

Gaikokujin

Gai = outside
koku= country
jin = person

"outside country person" = "foreigner"

Gaijin is the slang term, but it's nothing offensive

Megane<< nice, sounds like you could make a really smooth transition if you were to be accepted.

You sure? From what I was reading about it on Wiki and the Nation States forum (a thread about a guy who got a job to design a new destroyer for the Japanese navy. Confused ) gaijin was considered to be offensive, atleast in the sense of being improper. Like radio or tv broadcast wouldn't use it. Oh well, that's pretty much the only problem foreigners, especially Westerners, would have in Japan; the xenophobia.

@Megane, sounds you're going on some sort of exchange program in Japan? Actually I think that Japanese minor I want to get at uni has a 3rd year exchange to Osaka or some other place...

I asked a friend about it and he says it's more in the fact that it's a label imposed on a person that may point out the fact that you are an outsider. It's like if someone came to your country and you called them "foreigner" the whole time. Sure it's true and not meant to be cruel or malicious, but it's a constant reminder that you're not from around here.

Oh my goodies, the Japanese class was just uber awesome.

Can I post up photos here??? Cause I'm planning to take some and show to the whole world what a huge step this is for me.

Anyway, the sensei is a very nice girl around 25 yrs old and very energetic. She speaks in both our native language and English (though sometimes she speaks to some Japanese speakers in our class), very tolerant/considerate to slow learners, and best of all:

SHE GIVES OUT REWARDS.

She promises to bring chocolates next class because we will have some 'game time' which will probably also be my last class with her. We got too many for a regular class so we will be split into two...

How I wish I don't get transferred to the other section. They say a fat guy will be the sensei there... meh.

Woooh okay then, I'll take pics (with my camphone) and put them up here. But today's the distribution of class cards/grades in my college, so I guess I'll just put them up on Friday~

Well it does look like a bar (a very small one) but it's not candy:
[img:182:130:3e06c17988]http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/671/938377chocnutphilippineef0.jpg[/img:3e06c17988]
This is Choc-Nut, a sweet piece of prize for those who studied well. Yipee~ It's mostly cocoa grounded together with peanut, it tastes like... chocolate+peanut butter hehe~

And I am still in the Philippines. It is when after my 1-year Japanese classes end that it will be exactly the time for the flight of the selected scholars 'TO' Japan (what confusing grammar).

Right now I'm just studying Nihongo here in the Philippines~ Wink

Oh and sorry to burst your bubble, but I have to. My sensei is a Filipina; she is pretty though. Very Happy

Well if xeno's not updating, I will~ Laughing

I just came from the Jap classes today. The class has now officially split up into two: one with the girl sensei, the other (us) with the fat guy sensei.

The class was pretty good, the guy sensei is quite fluent in Japanese because apparently he just came back from Japan (Teacher's Training scholarship). And aside from that, he's part-Jap.

Well I think everything's not that bad, but every now and then we would hear laughter from the other class. And somehow, it looks as if the cream of the crop is the other class (the fluent Jap speakers and writers are in the other class)... Oh well~

Here's a pic of my classroom, it really looks Japanese IMO:

It's my first time to have a desk with that little storage under it... hee hee. Lookie, at the sides of the desks, there are hooks to put up your bags too~ Embarassed
