Yeah, ability to destroy entire planets is definitely more powerful than grim reaper abilities with tons of strings attached.
On that note, I'm gonna lay down my vote for Atomsk from FLCL. The real Pirate King; he steals entire solar systems. Plus he swings a '61 Gibson EB0 bass guitar. Gotta love it.

Though I really hate to say it, I'm gonna have to say Vegito from DBZ. He's got a crazy amount of power thanks to Goku and is still very intelligent thanks to Vegita. He's also got all their skills. Gogeta is also extremely powerful, but he's only around for 30 minutes or less.

See, but Atomsk would just absorb him. If he can suck multiple planets into himself then I think he can handle a level whatever the hell they got up to after I stopped watching super saiyan.

Yeah, I guess your right. Why blow up the planet when you can absorb it? The only problem is that in DBZ none of the main characters did anything really destructive, so it's hard to guess the kind of power they have. They only worried about saving the planet or people of the planet. The only person in DBZ that did real damage was Kid Buu. He could destroy planets and even solar systems. Then in DBZ GT the main heros are supposed to be way stronger, but there's less destruction going on.
The reason I know this stuff is because a few years ago DBZ was the closest thing we had to anime here in South Africa. _________________

Reminds me of the States a decade ago when I started watching DBZ. It wasn't until college in 2003 or 2004 that they aired Cowboy Bebop on TV and I actually found out what anime was supposed to be. Anyway, I finally gave Dragon Ball up after the Buu saga. The problem was that they peaked in power way too soon and didn't really know how to make the characters actually seem stronger. As far as the fighting was concerned there really wasn't any change after the Goku vs. Frieza fight. They just kept airing more episodes because the series was still profitable, much like Bleach and Naruto.

You're completely right about DBZ. It became too boring and simple. I still prefer bleach and naruto, but the problem with these two is that certain fights and events take up too many episodes, slowing down plot development and making me lose interest. One piece is more interesting. _________________

That's why even though I'd actually like to see what happens with both Bleach and Naruto (stopped watching Bleach after that fight with the former espada with a mustache a intense kicks, stopped watching Naruto right before his reunion with Sasuke), I refuse to sit through all the filler that now takes up about half of every episode. Those way too long back-and-forth facial close-ups in Naruto just infuriate me.

Obviously Light from Death Note sre he's weak as hell but he's smart and can easily kill any Dragonball/Naruto/Bleach character off without breaking a sweat. Sure he got some drawbacks like having to write their names in the book but still hard to beat that.
Someone stronger then Light would be Ryuk who follows Light around, can't be seen by others unless they touch the death note and near imortal not to mention attacks just go straight through like nothing on him. No drawback other then he's lazy and would probably not give a damn about fighting anyone.
Then third one up would be... *drumroll* Zero from Code Geass. He'd probably be able to win over Light since for one he's wearing a helmet and wouldn't give his name to Light. Plus he can just order Light to be his loyal slave and use him any way he wants to kill of anyone same thing should apply for Ryuk. Met any other character from DB/Naruto/Bleach etc just order them to kill themselves and problem solved. Got to love the abilty to give any order to anyone.
The rest might have power enough to destroy the world but that's nothing compared to what Light and Zero can do and these guys probably can't lift 100kilos. Now that's true power.
As for mecha we have mecha threads so try keeping the mech talk there insteed. It's around here somewhere.
Yeah Light would be the most powerful but you are forgetting a character that even overpowers death and that would be *dum dum dum dum!!!* SUZUMIYA HARUHI - POWER OF A GOD~ anyone?

Did not see that coming, but in retrospect, yes, Haruhi Suzumiya would appear to be the strongest anime character ever. However, upon recollection, doesn't Haruka Kaminogi from Noein - Mo Hitori no Kimi e - have roughly equivalent power? She can basically reshape the world according to her wishes but, like Haruhi, doesn't really have full control over her power.
I could be wrong about that. It's been a while since I watched either series.
Kuma seems strong now, but he's from a long running shounen. and like how hawkeye mihawk embarrassingly died from falling down a flight of stairs off camera.
He's onl; seeming strong because the plot is with him now. When that leaves him, he'll crumple like a saturn in a front end collision.
I don't want to list all the anime GODs. but there are quite alot of them.
Kamisama Kazoku's dad was i believe a fully conscious god.
Macademi Wasshoi! had some fully fledged gods and demons.
Kuma wouldn't even stand up to Laharl. and for godsakes he's a devil fruit user. which gives him a crippling weakness.

A lot have said Goku is strongest 'cos he can destroy planets, but in Tengen toppa gurren lagan
they throw whole galaxies so I think it's quite easy to say Simon is the strongest.
If you accept the author's TEXT stating character is smart and powerful, then likely woli from ippo would win.
why? because this poorly written character has a habit of stating 'I've seen this before' and then proceeds to defeat his opponent with a series of punches.
...while onlookers comment on how genius this move is.
and again I got my Vote of Tenchi Muyo from the OAV, who .... Ends up with a harem of 3 or 4 godesses, several spaceship fleets... from the jurai and GXP millitaries, and of course access to washu's space pirate ship class fleets.
....beyond that being stated to have power beyond the gods that rule the universe, and its suggested that the part of him that was divine fathered the gods.
Capable of teleporting vast distances on reflex, walking out of black holes, dodging planet buster attacks, regenerating from being pretty much destroyed, or heck even from being destroyed cuz the goddesses in his harem would just ressurect him.
....alternatively you could go with the turn A gundam.
