Indeed, for people who just got into anime, DONT go to stuffs too cute, they may not get used to it. The more popular choices (for the guys, dont know about the girls, though, sorry )are usually the "long-running fighting based"
DGrayman, Naruto, Bleach, Gundam series. etc
Those anime movies as well. eg Paprika , Ghost in the shell, FF7:Advent Children et

the only problem with those is that people get too easily sucked into just watching those shows and they kinda break off into their own subdivision seperate from the rest of the anime fans... and in the end, only become fans of that show. Maybe it has something to do with the target-demographic, seems like people who like Naruto and Bleach are the younger teens

definitely

Miyazaki films are also a good start

You're not scaring anybody away my friend. Unless they have some sort of phobia with animated drawings, or they've only seen Bible Black?

I don't think the question has any universal answer. After all, taste is subjective, eg: one might like Bleach while another don't. But you could always ask them about their favorite genre and recommend them specifically.

I agree that you should use more mainstream anime first like the shonen ones (Full Metal Alchemist, Yu Yu Hakusho, etc.). I got into anime by watching action type shows first then moving on to other genres from there.

Miyazaki films are also a good idea, I would recommend Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away to start of.

Other good ones would be Millennium Actress, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Fate Stay Night

Starting with action type is good but I think its would be better if they start with movies rather than series.

Some of my friends got bored before they finish the series or they forget about it after watching one to three episodes.

Miyazaki films sure attract the attention ^.^

Hmm, for starters,
I think alot matters with the first impression.
What oftern comes to mind of a person that does not know anime is
"Oh, those cartoons" Which obviously their wrong.

So, it'l probably be good to start of with a bang.
Hmmm, Death Note might be abit too much to handle.
Series like Code Geass Perhaps??

Something exciting which you can never go wrong.
It gives them a rough idea about anime.
Some nail bitter anime for a start would probably give them good
first impressions.

Then after their first taste, you can slowly expose them to the other
genres like comedy, drama, mecha.....ectectect~

FMA seems like the obvious choice. It even has a good dub which should get people over who wouldnt watch a subbed show.

I also think Love Hina should be watched early. Its very likable but if you watch it after watching loads of other animes you might dismiss it because it has all the things people hate about harems (such a the wimpy lead)

the movie Idea is very good for people who get bored from watching a series, one of my friends wanted to sample a (cartoon) so I gave him Vampire Hunter D: blood Lust..
if they are ready for a series I try stuff like FMA or Slam Dunk..

what worked for me before might not or should I say will definitely NOT work for the would be anime fans of today...

For movies I would recommend Miyazaki films to start off with...

for series... I guess something easy, straightforward kinda approach... Fushigi Yuugi or Yuyu Hakusho and maybe even Rurouni Kenshin would be good ol titles to see...

I'm not sure how wise it is to put them into Naruto or Bleach but they are options as well...

at a much later time should they be introduced to things like Deathnote, GTO, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Air... then moving along you must insert in the ecchi titles as well... can't forget about those... Very Happy

In my case I started off with Voltes V... Then on to DBZ... then Yuyu Hakusho, Flame of Recca, Gundam W, Rurouni Kenshin...

then I got into the whole hentai and ecchi phase cause I was a growing highschool student... Razz Oh and almost forgot that whole craze with Neon Genesis Evangelion...

And it continued on, watching anime on the local channels, on cable, and once I had internet.. well... yeah... you can probably figure out the rest... Very Happy
