I don't know much about the painting or the future, but one thing I heard is that the woman who works at the museum is the main character of the original novel, Kazuko Yoshiyama.
This movie is not exactly based on the novel's story but is set in the same universe as the original novel, only several years later. The story of the novel and this movie is very similar too, you could see this movie as sort of a spin-off of the original novel. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

This was my impression of the ending.
That person simply went back in time to be able to see a painting that was possibly destroyed in his time. That is, there is no evidence that the painting exists. The painting itself, if I remember correctly, resembles peace and balance etc. etc.
I was a little off by the last line that person says as well. "I'll be waiting for you in the future" to me is some false hope that they will meet up again. Possibly when Makoto becomes older and they meet in real time, or when that person is able to go back in time again and it generally will be Makoto's future. Oorrrr Makoto may discover a device that will lead her to the future - who knows?
Up to our imagination I believe.
It was a great movie. Though I wish the ending were executed better. The events that occured were very engaging, and the overal structure was superb, but it must have been difficult to create a satisfying ending. I for one had a feel-good impression, but also an emptiness in my stomach.
I hope the DVD comes out soon too~ I want it! |

@Himitsu
From what I read about the original novel...
The time traveler in that novel was actually from 2660AD. He also told the girl that they will meet again, which would be impossible since the girl can't live over 600 years.
So, in this movie, it should also be a false promise that they would ever meet again.
I just loved seeing Makoto roll around every time she time leaped. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

Seems I wasn't the only one who been waiting for this movie to be subbed... I am sorry to say that over time I kinda forgot about it. Didn't even know the subs where out until yesterday when I was going through anidb for something to watch but man I'm glad I did. To bad it didn't get subbed before our best of 2006 list was made or I'd have put it on.
I really liked this story and how they pulled everything together and that every action had their consequence and how they were dealt with. I have to admit I thought there was going to be more love drama in the whole thing since there were two guys there. Also because I think I read it somewhere but still it was very satisfying to watch it. The ending was ok but I don't know maybe I would have wanted more from it.
There were a few things however that didn't make any sense like where she'd pop up after leaping since at first she just seemed to pop up at random places insteed of where she was at that time.
Ahh I want to buy it now... |

| I wanna buy it too, thanks for the explanations that cleared some things up in my mind...Kinda sad to hear that they wont be together in the end, certainly felt some emptiness at the end. Oh man that means Makoto is gonna be like Kazuko..... |
