Hi fellow A-S forumers

My home internet connection has been having problems lately. I have a cable modem and is using a D-Link wireless router for the home network, I keep it wired though.

The problem is, the connection suddenly goes out all of a sudden and comes back few minutes later to normal. It's kind of like tide going in and out, and it's frustrating. When it happens, all my computers within the network loses the connection to internet. My desktop is a mac running Mac OS X, other computers in the network are running Windows XP.

This sort of problem used to happen often with my previous DSL internet provider, since then I switched to Cable connection and this hasn't happened so far until now. This kind of problem has been happening since so many years ago and calling up the internet provider hasn't given me much solutions.

Anyone have an idea about what could be causing this problem?
I'll appreciate any help I can get, thank you.

No experience with the router you got. But when the connection dies can you still connect to the router? Like entering the console.

I would just suggest the following to start with.
- Reset router. And see if it still happens.
- Reset to factory if first one didn't helped.
- As extra. Filter on MAC adress + a wep key or whatever Wireless connection security. Just to make sure no one else beside you is using your connection. For all you know some weirdo is using your internet and reseting the router from time to time.

And are you sure it's the router that loses the connection and not the modem that goes to the router is the falty part? Normally you can see by the lights that are blinking/burning whether the router is functioning properly.

And how often does it happen? Once a hour or more frequent or less?

And perhaps theres some problem with your cable company. I had a time to where my internet would frequently crash... But that was due to some maintenance

If you already called your cable company and they know for sure that it isn't them than nvm what i just said about the maintenance Razz The quoted part is a bit unclear if you mean that you called the cable company or the old DSL provider.

@Renzoken
Thanks for the advices.
As for the reseting the router, yes, I've done it before and it still happens.

Also, I haven't called the internet provider yet (this time at least). I haven't checked out if the local network still works when the connection goes down, I'll have to see if it does next time the problem occurs.
As for the frequency of the occurrence, it's really random, sometimes the connection stays ok for a long period of time, sometimes it goes on and off every 5 mins.

I don't have time to check everything out at the moment, I'll have to do it tomorrow.

Meh, D-Link routers.... That's the very same reason I've ever stopped relying on their products. But it's been a while since I've bought two different models of theirs (a regular router and the other wireless, and both disconnected frequently on me), so I don't know how much they've improved since then.

You can probably wait for a guy in here to tell you how to fix the problem. Or you could go ahead and buy a different brand or buy a newer model. Until then, you could state the model of your router and someone might be able to tell you their configurations, etc.

If you have DSL-504T, DSL-524T, or DSL-G504T, then you could probably install Linux based firmware on it called OpenWrt. Though, I'm not sure if you're willing to go that far ^_^; Well... that's all I could say about this situation of yours.

Silver, have you tried upgrading the firmware of your router? Certain disconnections sometimes maybe due to a bad firmware. Try to look for a new firmware in D-Link website and upgrade it. Hopefully, that will resolve the issue, but if it is not, like thugangel suggested, you may consider buying other routers.

BTW, have you tried connection to the modem directly during the problem and see whether you are able to connect to internet? This is just to confirm that it is an ISP problem or modem fault. Sometimes, lots of people blamed the ISP for their disconnection problem, which is not the case.....

Hmm I'm beginning to suspect that you guys are right on the router being the problem. I haven't tested what you guys suggested while the problem occurs, but I think I can start by going to D-Link website and finding more about it. I have a D-Link DIR-625.

I'll get back to you guys after I try those things you've suggested.
Thanks again everyone.

My girlfriend has somewhat a similar problem. Her DSL-300g modem doesn't seem to be working. Like it would work for a few hours and then pretty much die. All the lights would go off except for the power. I've told her to unplug the power for a few minutes to see if that works. It worked for the first few times, but now, even unplugging it for 5-10 mins doesn't do anything anymore. Sometimes the modem will start working by itself though it isn't long before it dies again. Any help would be much appreciated.

P.S. I'm not very tech savvy (bout the same as an average owner - which is pretty much zip), so please bear with me if I get lost. Thanks.

Well this problem went away completely for while until yesterday.
The same problem started happening and calling the ISP didn't solve anything. It seemed fine today though...

Ok, everything's been fixed today. The technicians from the ISP came and fixed everything. It turns out the cable signals were bad in the house. The modem is upstairs and the signal was degrading as it passed through a splitter that was in the attic. So basically, I've been getting an inferior internet speed even though I've been paying the same amount of money for much higher speed. Rolling Eyes

Did they give you a booster or did they replace the splitter?

Oh I forgot to say that.
They just replaced the splitter and the signal jumped way up.
