Childish? I've checked every single one of the new animes that came out in April and none of them are childish (well, in my opinion). Childish, in my opinion, is something like Pokemon. If your looking for a darker themed anime, try Darker than Black or Claymore, those are pretty dark themed with more gore.

And, you judge an anime on gore and adult content? What people should judge an anime on is the storyline, characters, and overall presentation.

You just have to know where to look if you want gory animes (I personally don't like them, stuff like Elfen Lied gave me nightmares for a week).

One thing that has gotten better in newer animes is the artwork and graphics which have gotten a whole lot better. People who think the storylines are getting generic, their ALL generic. Only the first of each genre is original. There are only so many stories, nearly all anime reuse same storyline with different settings and changes.

I would have to say you have a rather shallow taste in anime.
I used to look for gore and violence in anime when I was going through puberty... it's an immature attitude to look for violence in choosing a good anime.
Yeah, back in high school, I liked things like Evangelion, Hellsing, and typical boy anime with lots of violence. I grew out of that sort of attitude. I really don't have a preference in genre, as long as I find it entertaining to watch, I'll say it's good. Though these days, I lean more towards comedies.

Also, I think I know what you are talking about when you say the trend in anime has changed to something "childish". It's true that most of the anime targeting "adult" audience contained lots of violence and gore. These days, most of the adult oriented anime would likely to contain cute girls and overloaded with "cute". This trend has a name... "moe" (mo-eh). It's a big subject and I think you should just read up some wiki article on "moe".

You are just not watching the right stuff.

I mean the mainstream stuff like Naruto, One Piece and Bleach have gotten worse because they should have ended 200 episodes ago.

But the GOOD stuff ... you know the stuff that has been edited and written for quality?

Lets look at the Current anime this season that people are talking about.

well, there is Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann, which is the best Super Robot Anime I've seen only 8 episodes of. (better than most at the 8 episode mark)

There is Nanoha... which... I really need to see more of the Genre, only thing I could compare it to is the dub of sailor moon.

There is Code GEASS which is ... really good Gundam-esc.

Death Note was very good, haven't watched past ep 25. Sorta feel it should have ended there.

And of course tMoHS... was awesome.

So, the point is, they will always make crappy shows. but IMO the 'good' shows are much better than they were in the past.

Though the children's anime seems to be slipping.

It is getting better.
one part would be the blood and gore. There's:
Hellsing
Elfen Lied
Speed Grapher
Gants
and there are other more that I forgot or I dont know

I don't know about the recent stuff from this year, but the newer stuff I've enjoyed has just seemed better quality with the storylines and artwork. Like in Elfen Lied, and especially with Full Metal Panic: 2nd Raid. That's probably the best example of things getting better where the the 2nd Raid story, intense emotions, and artwork just seems so much better than the original.

I don't know if you can compare Nanoha to any other magical girl series. Nanoha was pretty revolutionary because it was a magical girl series targeted towards mature audience rather than little girls. First of all, Nanoha was a spinoff from a H game series Triangle hearts; which obviously makes it inappropriate material for children's anime. Second, Nanoha focuses on "badass" battle scenes rather than the usual "fill the world with love and peace" kind of ideal present in regular magical girl genre. So I think comparing it to any magical girl genre is wrong.

ok i know people are going to hate me for this but in my honest opinion i think hellsing sucked ass. i don't care to watch an anime that the character is unrivaled and defeats the opponents without breaking a sweat, that was boring as hell and worse then DBZ.

look I like a good comedy every now and then but when someone gets hit over the head and is called baka 10 times its not funny anymore or when a guy/girl sees something semi erotic and their nose starts to bleed, its just not funny. shit like this is like when you're in elementary school and you laugh at a fart, its childish.

i base anime on content, and storyline. i don't really care on how the quality of the art style is because the way an anime looks is the last thing that attracts me to it. i care about the storyline of any anime but if I'm not happy with contents within I'm not going to watch it. if an anime is suppose to be serious then i sure the hell don't want to see something which is really over exaggerative and or overly cutesy wich will entirely change the mood.
what animes are left when you take away gore, violence, suspense, adult language, and other adult content? i think all thats left is all the over exaggerated and overly cutesy anime for comic relief, so pretty much its stuff suitable for children(anything suitable for a child is most likely childish) from pokemon, massugu ni ikou to one piece and also there are the romantic comedy stories such as "ichigo 100%". I'm not saying romantic comedies are bad because that would make me look like an idiot since i myself like romantic comedies and it seems that there are a lot more of those type genres then really anything else(my opinion).

red255 i loved death note the manga but im a little scared to watch the anime since they usually make the manga look bad. i also agree that naruto should be shorter but not by 200 eps, maybe like 100 eps. i never got into watching one piece i believe i only watched one episode and i didn't find it worthy. I'll check out the animes you suggested when i get the time.

judgement if all new anime genres have the same or a similar storyline and all thats different is the way it looks, then wouldnt you get tired of watching the same thing over and over or are you the type of person that can be entertained by the same thing as long as it has a shiny new look?oh and how the hell do you get nightmares from an anime like elfen lied?????? if elfen lied gives you nightmares then what do movies like Nightmare on Elms street,Halloween,Alien,The Thing and other horror movies do to you???

silverkitsune do you not watch violent anime any more, do you stick with only comedy and romantic comedies?doesn't that get boring, dont you feel like you just need some action from time to time?(no pun intended)

baka05carl hellsing sucked(my opinion) but elfen lied was good.

mrsentimenta i hear that FMP is a great anime but for some reason i always forget to check it out

so since the poll is saying that its geting better then i must be wrong and I'm just not looking at the right animes then. I accept defeat

No, like I said, I have no preference to any genre. I just said I tend to like comedy anime bit more. I do like action in anime, just that its not a requirement for me. Read the post before saying all that...

Yeah, Hellsing sucked, but you might wanna check out the OVA, it might be a pleasant surprise.

ok i'll check out the ova

you're right, it was stupid of me to ask such a question when your words were what they were so i was wrong in saying that.you being as educated and adult shouldn't accuse someone of having a shallow taste in anime when you don't know the full story. you leaned towards comedy after your thrills of gore, i leaned towards gore now that comedy has turned into a bore. my mind Inst narrow and content with one subject from time to time i need something irregular.so just because i said i want more gore and adult content doesn't mean thats all i want in all anime, it just means at this time i want to see some good action packed animes. so making that accusation is rather insulting when you know nothing of me or my taste in anime.

so i still find a lot of the new anime childish from my view and not as good as older anime.i find that new anime seems a bit cartoony which in my opinion is childish.

You know, you should really stop watching anime...
When you start thinking about how nothing makes sense in an anime, it's time you quit. Sometimes you really have to just accept things as they are and enjoy it for what it is... kind of like how people can enjoy B-movies.

Most anime are built on top of foundation of trends which have accumulated over decades. Most anime out there just follows the standard routine that seems stupid in your view, and some really are just stupid and hollow show without any unique flavor to it. But if you find a show that you think is stupid, do what I do: "don't watch it". Just find some other series you like and move along, there are plenty of anime out there, don't dwell on shitty series.

I think the reason why the newer series seems so bad is because there are more series being animated than in the past. Every year the number of anime being released is growing, this means that even mediocre to downright terrible series will be animated along with some quality series. So the studios are less choosy on what new series to produce now days.

How exactly do you choose what to watch? Do you use anime reviews? because that I never do. When new anime season begins, use my method: download every first episodes of the new series and watch them. Drop the ones you find stupid. Keep the entertaining ones until it goes bad. Rinse and repeat every season.

Also, saying that art style quality is the last thing you consider about an anime tells me that your taste is completely different than mine. Because I really do care about art style. I also think most mangaka and animators do care a LOT about art style. Anime IS about art style, and if you really don't care about that, you really have no reason to stick to watching anime oppose to just watching a regular movie or tv shows.
Of course art style alone won't be enough to keep a show entertaining, but it is important nevertheless.

It is true though, there can only be so many original things, all games, movies, animes, etc all have re-used storylines with re-used characters. I don't mind though since they usually have a surprise or two which sets them apart. Besides, anime is one of the only things I have to look forward to in life so why would I get bored of it?

Elfen Lied gave me nightmares because everytime I meet someone new in reality, the detailed image of that person with their head torn and their body being torn in two with their insides spilling out goes through my mind repeatedly.

And "real movies" don't scare me or make me sad or anything. That's why I don't watch them anymore since I get no emotions from watching normal movies. Only anime/manga can satisfy my needs now.

Note: One Piece is not a anime for little children, it has plenty of death, blood, violence. Just as much as Bleach and Naruto, perhaps not in the early arcs but later one, you will see. And if your judging it from the dub, you should know by now that the dub seriously failed. I don't think I need to explain the stuff they did (ex. cut down 100 episodes into 50, and removed all blood, extreme violence, death, alcohol and drugs, etc).

Just because an anime is from a H-game doesn't make it not suitable for children. Nowadays, nearly 50% of the new animes coming out were originally H-games (visual novels/bishoujo games as I call them). Most of those "childish" animes WERE H-games originally. Alot of H-games focus more on the storyline/characters than the hentai itself so those make good action/suspense animes. Alot also focus mainly on the relaxing atmosphere or "aura" which is given off by the game making them perfect material for an anime (most of the time, an anime which can be called "childish by people like isamu2).

EDIT:

Now THAT is a good post which I totally agree with. The only problem with just watching the first episode is that the anime may get better later on or the first episode was just a "bad" one (ex. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya). I say judge by first 3-5 episodes, works alot better than just checking the first episode out. I would have missed out on ALOT of good animes if I had just watched the first episode and judged it.

i voted the second choice and i think this depend on the person's opinion.
If one get along with the old style then he/she probably wont like animes of these days. Old animes have low quality of the art unlike now its more than great but most of them have the same storyline and this is kinda boring especially when it has the same details.

I totally agree on this one. So im not the only one who is thinking in that way ^___^
I used not to pay much attention to some scenes like this for not to lose its interest.

Some ppl like the way animes developed and as i said it depends on the person's taste.

i do try to look for new anime to watch thats why i've asked for your opinions on some good anime.when i get new anime i download the first 3 eps to get a better look at the anime and i dont use reviews i use the people here because i think i can trust the opinions of the people here. so yeah now that theres more anime being produced that leads to anime people wont like and thats why i've been finding some shit anime. im tired of finding bad and thoughtless anime thats why i want your help,i need you to prove me wrong and show me the anime that just captivated you.i know there are a lot of good anime out there but im just having trouble finding them. I do watch regular shows like my all time favorite show called "HOUSE". now thats a great show

Judgment i agree that new horror movies arent scary but when i was a child nightmare on elms street was the only one to give me a nightmare. ok what you said about meeting new people and seeing all that elfen lied stuff go through your mind i found funny, dont ask it just was

trueline thank you, finally someone who somewhat agrees with me with out having to argue with me first

For something utterly different to the usual shouen action/love comedy/harem I suggest Maria-sama ga miteru ~ it will get you hooked ^^ like it did to be me Laughing

isumu--> if you get tired of one genre, move on to the next, anime of the one genre may seem to get boring and repetitive ... then move on to the next, something different, something you don't watch often ... anime is WAY too diverse to be generalised together ... IMHO anyway xD
