Hey Mr./Ms. Isamu2! This is a cool post! I'd definitely give Full Metal Panic, at least the 2nd Raid (although seeing the first two series makes the 2nd Raid more enjoyable) a shot. I like doing the reviews here at Anime-Source. I goofed where I gave 2nd Raid a "9" rating at first becasue of some slower episodes and I didn't really like the music. And I found out I couldn't change my rating to a "10" which is really what it deserves. My Bad!
It would be good to mention of recent POOR Anime series, where not all newer stuff is actually better. Series like Solty Rey, Dears, Burst Angel, and Ugly and Beautiful have appealing artwork and look like they should be good. But their characters and plot lines are pretty bad. So if anyone just watched these series to judge if the newer stuff is better, they'd probably be saying the newer stuff is crap.
Mr. Judgement, keep in mind that all that violence/threatening stuff is NOT impressive. What would be SUPER impressive is when you learn how to take care of yourself so you can get out of your really tough situation (do what you can at least until you're a legal adult and all) and make a good life for yourself. Cripe, go to other family members or even the authorities if you have to. If watching Anime works for you to take care of yourself, that's great! I love Elfen Lied, but I always worry that the super violent Anime series give the message to just rip people to shreds if they cross you. I also love how Elfen Lied also helps me appreciate the little things, like how Mayu and Nana were able to find safety, comfort, caring, and a place to belong after escaping their own personal hells. I hope you find the same kind of thing.

GRC you speak as if i just started watching anime, did i give the impression that im not an experienced viewer?
No, I did not have that impression that you are not inexperienced. My impression, however, is that you are an experienced viewer who still relied too much on popular opinions to see what is good. You have to work out what kind of anime you like.... as for me, I can say this is kind of anime I like for each genre:
Action: must not be too long, must not waste time, action scenes must not drag on to no end. Thus, if I see someone saying that x anime is cool because it's really long and fights are really long.... then I know that it's not an anime for me. So for action, I would prefer stuffs like Scryed, Buso Renkin, Sadamitsu the Destroyer rather than Bleach, Inuyasha, Naruto.
Ecchi/Harem: if a male lead is a loser, then I will not watch it because I found loser heroes extremely irritating. If a male lead is a pervert, however, then I'll watch those series because I personally prefer pervert guys who are actually brave to shag chicks who are around them over losers who are not even dared to shag when chicks around them are ready to let him eat them. Thus, for ecchi/harem, I would prefer Love Love, Raimuiro Senkitan, Golden Boy etc. over Love Hina, Maburaho, Futakoi any day.
Drama: the story must be well developed and the character development must be profound. No manipulation. Thus, I would ignore manipulative crap like Air, Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, Elfen Lied and watch things like Now and Then Here and There, Monster, Barefoot Gen etc.
I also happened to know (after trying different genres) that I do not like slice of life and shounen-ai anime. Thus, Azumanga Daioh, Honey & Clover, School Rumble are something which I would avoid because I don't like them... as well as I won't be watching any shounen-ai stuffs. I however found myself that I have a fondness to shoujo romance and magical girl stuffs...and especially when these are paired together. Hence, I would be watching Sailor Moon, Wedding Peach, Pretear... and I don't care if some people say 'these are only for gals'...
I also happen to know that I like war/political drama. Thus, I will be watching Zipang, Gundam Seed+Destiny etc. I wouldn't give a damn if those anime are so obscure and no one watch them.
....
In short, start to think about what anime are your top favorites up until now. Try to think what are the aspects/features in those anime which you like. Do you like x anime because of the ecchi? Do you like y anime because of the romance? etc. etc. Then try to think what are the anime you hate? And why do you hate them? Because you can't stand the loser hero? because you can't stand the overly girlieness of it? Because you hate the long, drawn-out action scenes? You will gradually discover your own preferences. Afterwards, try to find anime which have those things that you like and don't have the things that you hate. Don't listen to the people who say 'this is good' without a reason. Instead, read the synopsis of each anime carefully and ask yourself: does this anime has aspects I don't like or not? Does it have aspects that I'll like? If the answer to the first question is no and the second question is yes, then watch it; vice versa. Of course, you will still make mistakes occasionally (i.e. choose to watch something you don't like), but chances are most of the time you will see something that you will like, because you choose carefully, and with considerable consideration to your own preferences.
....good luck to you anyway, and don't give up watching anime _________________ [IMG:205:157:4263622574]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v608/charn/suzumiya-ep04-02.gif[/img:4263622574]

GRC i know what kind of anime i like and no i don't just watch the anime thats on demand, if i did then i wouldnt be asking for others opinions and i'd have a new anime to watch every few weeks. i ask other people what they like because it helps me find anime that I've missed out on. now these anime consist of new and old series and movies.i also dont judge how an anime will be just because i dont like the genre mainly because i like all genres of anime,i think it would be impossible to only watch certain genre and not all when you've been watching anime for well over 5 years.oh and by asking other people what anime they like its a lot faster then finding a good anime by just watching countless amounts of anime and sorting through them all to find a good one.this way gives me a list to start with instead of starting blind. _________________ go to www.LRmagic.com for all your magical needs

Of course anime is getting worse.
The market demanded it.
So they started regurgitating ten kinds of crap because they know people will buy their merchandise.
That's why there is an overabundance of copycats.
Just look at the current crap.
So much pedophilia.
There was this show where there were very young siblings were kissing each other with their tongues and whatnot and it was too popular.
Here's how you find better shows.
Ignore genres because they don't help you find anything.
Listen to pantagruel.
Look for people who have similar tastes.
Look at forums because you can tell what kind of show something is by what kind of people are talking about it. (Not by what they're saying)
Watch shows no one else does.
Read the manga version of shows if you can because they are usually better and easier to get.
Here, watch these current things:
Kaibutsu Oujo (Princess Resurrection)
Claymore
Witchblade (It got better near the end)

I really think anime is going better now.
Not just because the girls in anime always have bigger boobs now (it's definately one of the MINOR reason).
The artworks are so much better now and the details are off the hook.
Although the storylines are slacking because of unoriginality but still, with good artworks and good BMG, anything would work.

As far as anime getting better or worse... that's def a judgement based on your personal preference but I can agree with this comment for the most part. The artwork is getting better and there is so much more that can be conveyed! Now that we have the great artwork, we need some better storylines with somewhat satisfying endings.
I know personally, I agree that I hate anime where the male figure is a wimp whose afraid to talk to a girl. I know that I def love ninja type anime, anything with swords, or something with a thoughtful plot (Death Note). _________________ I am power driven by determination. Much much much much worse than it used to be.
Anime back in its golden years relied on real stories and good characters to drive their animes forward. Nowadays its crappy action, cheap and dumbed down humor, and senseless nudity/sex (this has always been a problem though).
Now, this is not to say that EVERY anime now is no good. But its getting harder and harder to find quality, original anime to watch. Anime companies are starting to run out of ideas now and are relying on fillers and guaranteed money making schemes instead of quality animation and script writing. The popularity of just average animes like Bleach and Naruto is proof of that...
I don't think anime is getting "prettier" either....hand drawn anime is far superior to anything we have now I think. If it was by hand, you know the artist puts himself into his work fully and makes every effort to make everything perfect. Now that everything is computer, drive for perfection and quality is most assuredly dropping.
I'm beginning to be sorely disappointed in anime now...even so far as to stop watching for long periods of time to wait for something compelling. But as a fan I will continue to watch in search of quality. _________________ Miku Miku!!

Mr./Ms. TrueAncestor, I agree much of the newer stuff is crap. But which of the older school Animes do you find to be top notch? Eva and the Ninja Scroll movie were the older Animes that I really enjoyed.

MrSentimental-->Ninja Scroll and EVA are good animes of course.....I would go so far as to say some of the best. Best is, of course, a matter of opinion. In my personal opinion, the best of the old school, in no particular order, includes some of these. Note that I the last year that I considered anime to be top notch was around 2002-2003. Of course, the list is non-exhaustive.
The Devilman Lady
Saint Seiya
Ayashi no Ceres
NOIR
Blackjack
Akira
Golden Boy (kinda....)
Ghost in the Shell
RahXephon
Saikano
Battle Athletes
Sol Bianca
Macross 7 (all of them are good)
Neo Ranga
Perfect Blue
Millennium Actress
Sexy Commando Gaiden: Sugoiyo!!! Masaru-san
Excel Saga
Puni Puni Poemy
Bubblegum Crisis
Captain Harlock
Irresponsible Captain Tylor
Gasaraki
Magic Knight Rayearth
Marmalade Boy
Revolutionary Girl Utena
I could go on for a while....but this is a good mix of both semi recent and old animes that attempt to capture why anime is awesome. And this was a quick list....Im sure I missed a lot of other classics.
Its Ms. TrueAncestor, by the way. ^^ _________________ Miku Miku!!
