This topic is NOT about your favorite anime.
From my experience as an anime fan, I can remember few series that completely occupied my mind for a certain period of time. These weren't necessarily my favorites, but they completely took over every waking moments of my life. After watching such series, I'd feel empty, obssess even more about it, and try to research everything about it until the obsession faded.
First of such was probably Evangelion. After watching the entire series and the End of Eva movie, I was completely engrossed with Evangelion. The obsession continues even though the initial shock has long faded away.
After the life changing experience of Eva, my obsession was passed onto a new series... Serial Experiments Lain. Mysteries and more mysteries, this abstract anime was so intriguing, I couldn't help but become obsessed with finding more about the series and interpreting the meanings. I was also obsessed with the opening song Duvet.
Most recent obsession comparable to the previous two would be FLCL. From what I've seen on the web, I know I'm not the only one who became total FLCL maniac. I probably watched the series many times over, and didn't feel bored at it. FLCL was different, just so completely different, not even Exel Saga had this feeling. Was it a work of a genius? or just a mindless piece of garbage? I'm not really sure now.
Ever since FLCL, I haven't experienced such obsessions about a single anime; which is probably a good thing since I can judge things in less biased manner than a zealous fanboy. It may mean that I have matured now and see things in a more objective manner. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img]
I can't really claim obsession to one sort of media but I analyze everything I see. The more time I spend with an anime, attempting to figure it out does not equate an obsession but simply revealing that there is more than meets the eye and I simply have to go farther than the surface. If I watch a mindless action flick, I'll pick up any symbols used but I usually only have to watch it once.
FLCL, Serial Experiments Lain, and Eva are perhaps the hardest to decoded. Mostly because the first time I watched FLCL, I didn't like the first episode. Someone prodded me to go back, and I'm glad I did. Lain was difficult because Lain is oddly obsolete while being advanced at the same time. Eva gave me the most difficulty, simply because I didn't understand that the choice Shinji makes between the movie and episodes 25-26. (Hint: It's yes in one, and no in another.)

Hmm now that I think about it, neurotic anime like Eva, Lain, FLCL weren't the only ones...
Right now I carry entire series of 2x2=Shinobuden and School Rumble in my iPod and watch them over and over. I've watched each ep of Shinobuden about at least 5 times. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img]

Total Obsessions....?
I guess mine would be Voltes V, Daimos, and Macross. I know they're really old but they're a pure classic animes that I've seen as I've grown and the first two were my first intros to anime.
I have watched the Dubbed and Subbed versions of this title and I prefer the JP voices all over it. Tosho Daimos, I wasn't able to find a single torrent concerning this one(not even dubs).
And Lastly Macross, the thought of Planes transforming to 3 modes is very unique...and I happen to like fighter planes too. _________________ PS3 Trophies

Fanboys and fangirls eh...? I know someone from another forum that is totally being a fangirl for all male shinigamis in Bleach... including that Quincy, Uryuu. The fanpics she showed us still left a bitter taste in my mind.
Either way, it is one thing to be obsessed with anime. But to be part of it, overindulging in what was in the anime, now that is another. I remember in the news where one boy killed his mom because Evangelion thought him so. That's sick, really _________________ ...

Also, I'm sure many people had an obssession on DBZ during their early days.
I for one admit it, my first real anime obssession back when I wasn't such an otaku is Dragonball (manga). I'd always be drawing Dragonball characters when I was in elementary school. So I hung around other kids who liked drawing. Dragonball was the coolest thing among kids back then. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img]

Obssession huh this was a fun topic I must say, there's only been one anime that I've had an obssession with and it wasn't really the anime itself that drew me in but the story around it and the world sucked me in. .hack I haven't seen the animes that much maybe once or twice at most but somewhere along the way I just fell in love with .hack and the world it takes place in. Im still not sure what drew me in but I found it to be intressting and Im still craving for more and more of it. Lucky me that the new mangas and the new anime is going to start soon plus the games ofcource. It was also diffrent from things I've seen before come on an anime about an online game in the future after internet gets shutdown by a virus made by a 10 year old not excatly your everyday kind of story.
I think I have a post somewhere where I explain how I was shaking my screen and yelling I want my .hack novels now dammit.
Also kind of ironic in a way right now the name of the opening song to .hack//SIGN is called obssession
Edit: Did I mention that my rank and sig is actually taken from .hack? So there you have it

Personal wise... I never really obsess in any title... if there's any obsession... I suppose I'm Obsess in 'anime'?? Well... I watch all kind of anime ranging from fairy tales like princess tutu to hardcore series like gundam series as well as sport series like Initial D and Prince of Tennis.
If obsession that brought to it's extreme... I suppose the title that comes into my mind would be:
Doraemon
Wedding Peach
Mahoromatic
Maria-sama ga Miteru
Rurouni Kenshin
I wouldn't want to elaborate how much those above mentioned series would have effected my daily life... but 1 thing for sure... they have changes my view of point in many aspect. Be it bad or good, I got not rights to judge it... so about obsession... I could hardly give any comment... _________________ [img:800:198:5c85a10b1b]http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1347/feenasighk3.jpg[/img:5c85a10b1b]

I can't say I have even been obsessed with an anime, but I will watch Cowboy Bebop anytime it pops up on Adult Swim. It was such a monumental series in the aspect of diversity and storytelling.
Samurai Champloo is another one, just great all-around.

EDITED 05/03 because it sounded more like a "my favorite anime is..." post:
Right now, I'm a Harutard... my obsession is the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. There are so many different sci-fi elements all coming into play and just seeing stuff about time-travel and aliens and espers discussed within a school setting really intrigues me. I've always been interested in reading about paranormal psychological powers and ghosts and whatnot, so this series really caters to me. I'm literally clamoring for each episode as it becomes available and then once I have it, I watch it 3 or 4 times.
This has prompted me to start an "SOS Brigade" here in the A-source forums... though I haven't decided on whether it should be in the ASClub section or the FFA. Got a couple more things to think about, then I'll post tomorrow night when I'm at work... cause... I... never really do any... you know... work. heh heh
Other series I have been anxious to continue with...
- Mai-HiME... interested in all this Yggdrasil and Norse mythology stuff
- Mahoraba ~ Heartful Days... I'm interested in the psych of Multiple Personality Disorder (or Dissociatve Identity Disorder for in the 'biz... or at least have taken psych 101)
- Evangelion.... big on psychology and those "man shouldn't play God" lessons _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

Anime I was totaly obssessed with?
I think the one I was most obssessed with ever, and it also happens to be the one that got me back into anime after many years of actualy hating 'japanimation' as it was known back then, was pokemon.
Yes I know many people hate it and nowadays, I can't realy blame them, after all it has become so incredibly commercialised (even more so then it was back when it started) and seems to be becoming more and more childish every year. The lack of character development (except for Team Rocket, who happen to be some of the most develpped characters I'v ever seen in anime), the lack of an interesting plot (same thing oevr and over again). Basicly, its lost its novalty.
But needless to say, I use to love watching it when it first came out and was a pokefan (and on some level, still am).
I use to watch all the episodes, buyed the merchandise, the video games (thatI still enjoy very much) and the card game that went with this.
When I learnt how to use the internet, the first thing I looked up in big bulk was pokemon.
I guess what got me hooked was the idea of being to own monsters that could fight each other, as simple as. Plus the idea of traveling and having to catch and train them was pretty cool, especialy for me who's only realy traveled to one other country, never had an adventure.
Of course, now I'v grown out of this ossession, having discovered so many different kinds of anime and enjoying them for what they are. But I still enjoy checking out whats new in the pokemon world and playing the games. And I still deffend the great phenomenon which is Pokemon, I mean, face it, it's done wonders for anime in the West and is still a winning formula after 10yrs and is the only anime series to pass the 400 eps limit.
Yes I'm aware it targets kids viciously for profit, that its become realy simple minded and is generaly hated for many of the same reasons Dragon Ball Z and Naruto is, its popular and has become accepted into Western sub-culture, and true anime fans seem to hate it when an anime becomes mainstream.
At the moment I'm not perticuarly obssessed with any anime. There was the time where I spent months just reading up on Evangelion or Fullmetal Alchemist. But that was just a passing phase.

hmmm the first anime i would say i was completely obsessed with would be Neon Genesis Evangelion... I would fight with people who would hinder me from watching even a single episode... that is how much i would want to watch it then... the next one would be rurouni kenshin... one of the few series i made sure to get the complete soundtrack of... then there was Elfen Lied... i watched it in one go and rewatched it again the day after and then debated with my cousin to watch it.. now he is obsessed with it as well... most recently would be the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya... it induced feelings of loneliness, emptiness and resentment when it finished at 14 eps... _________________
The first anime I became obsessed with is Gundam Wing. I fight my siblings if the try to steal the TV from me. The next one would be Rurouni Kenshin.... I really liked the series that I did got hang of it soundtrack for a while and the Tsuiokuhen OVA was the first anime series I bought. The last one will be Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid. I've watched this series 21 times already. _________________
