Burning .avi files on DVD-R's?

I've tried burning .avi files from my Apple G4 laptop onto a blank DVD-R disc using Roxio Toast Titanium, but the files don't seem to play. When I try previewing how the files will look on the DVD or try playing it after burning them onto the disc, the display goes black. Are .avi files incompatible with DVD-R discs, is there something wrong with my program, or is there something I'm oblivious to? =/ Please help?

how are you burning them? how are you trying to play them? there's a very big difference between simply burning the file to a DVD for archive purposes and burning a video file to create a medai DVD readable by DVD players and the like.
