Nitpicking.
It is not a translation issue. It is more of a "do your own take" issue. The context has changed here. It is not a big deal really. But those who would like to know that the fansub was faithful, might be shaken a bit to know that the subbers are 'liberally translating' as they go.
A better way might have them translate it as "... on my left ..." since Japanese speech usually omits any personal references and its okay to put it back in English. |

er.. he said down the hallway on the right. he was pointing in the direction of the hallway not the bathroom.
Anyway, watched the better sub yesterday. Seems they did leave out some stuff but it wasn't anything all that major. having watched it before didn't get me to stop laughing atthe same jokes That's def an indicator of awsomeness. _________________ [IMG:508:164:6c8e3c695e]http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p252/inqArk/Original_sig.jpg[/img:6c8e3c695e] |

Just to clarify this issue. I will now dare say it is a mistranslation instead.
This is what he said (from what I can hear).
"Rouga mon suki atari no hidari da kara"
"廊下門隙当たりの左だから"
Literally "Corridor door gap/interval vincinity (belongs to) left (exists) out of/through"
Or properly, "through this door, in the corridor on it's left"
It seems to me now a mistranslation by the fansub groups referred here. |

Wow, I can't believe this left/right translation debate is going on for almost 2 pages.
Anyway, I saw the first episode and I really like it alot. But somehow I keep picturing Seiji-kun and Midori to Mr. Garrison and Mr. Hat from Southpark. It is ruining my concerntration on the series otherwise, excellent first episode. |

Granted translating is something that can be done fairly liberally in the first place (that point can never be clear enough in most cases) but again Seiji could have been pointing the other direction and said the same thing the bathroom would still be on the left. (The girl would have just been directed down the other end of the hall that doesn't have a bathroom.
Yebyosh translated the tsukiatari correctly and that was the missing meat to this argument. <also confirmed the tsukiatari w/ my sensei> (Damn tsu and su sounding so similar when spoken like that...) tsukiatari is fairly basic direction giving in Japanese (And here I am screwing it up... But at least it turned out to be the meaning I had hoped.) There is no mention of the girls left or Seiji's left in the translation.
I still depict the right hand pointing to which side of the hall to head down, that's all. It doesn't change the fact that the bathroom IS on the left hand side of the hall. (Regardless of if the girl went in there or not.) If they wanted to put RIGHT in there they could have said it something like: "Head down the hall to your RIGHT, the bathroom is on the LEFT." / "head down the right side of this hall <which my finger is kindly pointing out to you> the bathroom will be on the left hand side." But again Seiji doesn’t say “migi” in there at all.
Japanese translation is tricky, make no doubt but in this case (since started) I am just not seeing a literal enough translation of what was said in the A-E version to have it make sense for me. (On the other hand they were one of the more respected groups to get the show out fast. Which will probably count for something in someone’s book)
As for what is the big deal and why are you arguing something so stupid for so long well it isn't a big deal really. Fansubs are free they can put whatever the heck they want to in their subs and ppl w/o knowledge of the language (The vast majority) would never be the wiser. In cases like this. On the other hand it is a matter of what is truthfully being said as opposed to what was subbed. For someone that would like to get a job in translation something easily noticeable like this sets off signals. (Like if they missed something this simple was it just a miss or should I be paying more attention to what is being said so I can see if they are really translating the whole thing or just winging it?)
It just comes off here as either a simple right being typed in instead of left or whomever did the translation for that part was paying attention to the visual finger pointing and not what instructions were actually given. What bugs me about it is this is something simple I wouldn't think a translator would miss. (Seeing as I caught it on the first watch, why a second QC or something didn't catch it is beyond me...)
In the land of people griping about how they want their anime faster faster faster with pretty karaoke effects and the whole 9 yards lest ye forget that the translation is still an important aspect of the show that should be respected as well.
But putting this back it the general scheme of things. Everyone makes mistakes. This is just one of them. |

great first ep! excellent start to a very promising show. havnt reread the beginning of the manga in awhile, but i think it stuk pretty close, with the exception of introducing some chars, and kept (mayb even enhanced) the charm that initially pulled me in. _________________

Just watched the second ep. It didn't have as many jokes but it was just as fun to watch and the end was hilarious Midori no Hibi pretends to be cute but actually it's one sick sick show!
Btw the preview for the next ep looks very promising |

Having read the manga.. i feel the show stays very true to the manga which is great! Meaning we can expect great things from the show in the near future.
This is one of the highlights in Spring 2004 anime. Does anyone know how many episodes Midori no Hibi is supposed to last? |

One of the subset of the laws of anime. The ruling is that the leading female cannot have her breasts displayed as smaller than a C even if her printed statistics state A.
That is why even Tendou Akane keeps getting called flat chested, barrel waisted *SMACK*.... *ouch* |

Heh, I like the fact that they are taking out that episodic feel of the manga and intertwining them together. Great episodes so far! |
