Synopsis & Reviews @ Anime-Source.com
I saw the raws for Ep 1 of this, and AFK's sub for this is out too... But anyway, there hasn't been a "real robot" mecha series for a while (ever since SEED ended), so I was somewhat looking forward to this. Plus it's a BONES series so it'll most definitely have some high quality animation.
So far it looks fairly typical though. Nothing special at all. The mecha are connected by cables ala Eva, and actually look a bit like mechanicalized Evas themselves. And the character designs look a bit crummy. I guess once I understand the story a bit I might like it more? |

Let me guess... The main character's a tormented teenage mecha pilot? |

From what I saw of the robots they looked more Rahxephon enspired design to me...
From the sounds of things this series is starting exactly as I thought it would. I really wasn't gripped by the story or previews... On the ohter hand one ep. does not a series make. Hopefully there is some catch in there that sets it apart and makes it shine. Until then here's to hopin'... |

Actually nope. He's just some happy go lucky guy who's skilled at piloting these things.
And yeah, the guy who designed the RahXephon did the designs for the mecha in this series (though this anime is based on a game). Anyway, BONES has not disappointed me yet, so I'm hoping that this will turn out well. But so far it looks fairly standard. |

Darn! Anyway, I don't think I'll be picking this up anyway. I wonder how the Japanese don't get sick of making and watching the same mecha stuff (and lots of it) over and over again until it rots... I mean it's been decades for gods sake! (at least I got sick of it after watching 5-6 of these shows). This stuff must be causing some brain damage.
Also one would think that the guys at BONES would try to do creative stuff after separating from Sunrise but except for Wolf's Rain lately they're going for the most mainstream stuff they can get their hands on.
Nah, whatever... it's no use to rant. It's not like anything will change and anybody'll stop making derivative stuff as long as there's a huge crowd to watch it. |

Don't dismiss this show so fast AlDim. You never know, maybe they have some crazy uniqe plot and character twists. |

Mecha is as much a genre in anime as anything else. They'll never stop making it no matter what. Especially since it was such a big part of Japanese society back in the 70's and 80's. So if I compare this to some American genre it'd be the costumed super-heroes. They'll never stop making cartoons and movies about them since they have such a firm foundation in the society.
Anyway I don't understand what certain anime fans' beef with mecha series are, but this genre is pretty diverse in and of itself. If you think they are all the same then you haven't been watching enough mecha. |

I don't say they are the same, I'm saying that anyway you look at it there isn't really much of a variation. In my opinion there are only 2 mecha series that brought innovation - the original Gundam and Evangelion. The rest (whether it's good or bad, somewhat original or a ripoff) is derivative stuff inspired by these two shows.
And the fact that super hero or mecha stuff exists and is watched by a throng of dedicated fans doesn't mean I have to like it or don't have the right to get sick of it The DBZ offspring also has a huge crowd and has turned into a genre of its own, does that mean it deserves all the buzz?
I'm not trying to bash anything specific here, I do like mecha to a certain point; just stating my opinion that there's way too much of it for its own good. Please let's not make this into a hater/fanboy flamewar cuz I'm not a hater and you're not a fanboy. |

Oh ok, yeah I have seen quite a bit of mecha haters so I wasn't sure if you were one of them...
Anyway I guess you're right about Gundam and Evangelion having a lot of derivatives and bringing innovation and influence... But you seemed to have forgotten "the rest" which are the Super Robot shows from the 70's and their offsprings. But anyway, I think there are quite a few interesting twists to the mecha genre otherwise. For example there are parodies like G Gundam and Nadesico which are quite "unique" by their own rights, action fests like Vandread and Full Metal Panic, music-oriented shows like the Macross series and most notably Macross 7, etc. There are mecha series scattered in many different genres as well, from war drama like Gundam, police stories like Patlabor, super hero stories like the Super Robot shows, etc. I think it's just a question of where to look. |

I don't really like the pre-Gundam mecha shows; they are pure mecha, in other words there's nothing in them that interests me.
As about Vandread and FMP - Vandread is my second favorite mecha show but not that much because of the mecha ^_^ and FMP could have been great if >insert usual FMP rant about boring and clicherd latter 2/3 of the show< (I loved the first 7-8 eps though).
Anyway, I never mind a bit of mecha if it's not the main part of a show. Even GitS:SAC has a bit of mecha but it's quite original in terms of design. I'd also love to see a mecha show that tries to break free of the self-imposed genre bounds (for starters I want to see a lead character that's not in his teens). But "The Mars Daybreak" doesn't seem to be the one to do it |

Hmm... Well you might be interested in Gundam: 08th MS Team then. Or G Gundam. Or even something like Gundam: 0080 (sorry but I am a Gundam nut )
Of course, there's also Macross Plus which is extremely popular among western fans who saw it. And of course, Macross 7 (I'm sorry but I'm a Macross nut too )
Anyway, I have no idea how old Graham in this anime is, but he doesn't look like your typical teenage mecha pilot, that's for sure. In fact he reminds me of G Gundam's Domon (mainly because they have the same seiyuu) |

Hmm well I'm not sure what to think of the show just yet. Water pirates on Mars...?
Anyway, the mecha designs seem aright so far. I didn't know the RahXephon designer took hold of this project but i didn't really need to... the designs spoke for themselves. This show could be pretty cool as long as it doesn't become all about the underwater fights. _________________ [IMG:508:164:6c8e3c695e]http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p252/inqArk/Original_sig.jpg[/img:6c8e3c695e] |

The way the pilot found his mecha was pretty tacky. Episode 1 didn't really tell me much. The underwater thing doesn't bother me at all. I'm hoping for some uniqe plot twists and story so I can enjoy this series |

Nothing too original yet... but something about the animation style strikes me. It just seems... very appropriate for the show. And to me, that can be a big sign of a show that will turn out to be good. When the artists seem to care about the work, it's a better sign that the work will turn out to be good. _________________ You can't hold no groove if you ain't got no pocket. |
