i have bean looking at FMA and i was wondering if anyone knew the meaning of the cross and the snake witch is the emblem Ed have. All i know is that Nicolas Flamel had it on his grave (first of the second line) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flamel
so if anyone could explain it to me i would be grateful. |

so what you are asking about medivel alchemy symbols?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Flamel-figures.png
Does it really matter... I mean the guy died and never made gold from something or such.
Glancing at it he incorporated alot of old-time biblical and witchcraft type symbols... seeing alot of Christian god symbols and snakes and the like.
The snake on the cross reminds me of hmm, probably trying to drain life from the christian god for immortality. Which obviously failed, as he died.
but look into witchcraft and christianity and try to figure out what they mean, I personally don't think it matters much as they are.... off.
They meant something to him, but really I don't see much significance to the figures as they are. You won't get much use out of those symbols. still the snake on the cross IS close enough that I'll look at them a tad more. |

it could be an early rendition of the Meducious (sp?), which is the symbol of medical science.
or similarly... The Star of Life:

EDIT... oh, the answer to your question can be found right in that wiki-entry you linked. In the references section, there's an external link that brings you here:

"He told me that the first portrait represented Time, which devoured all; and that according to the number of the six written leaves, there was required the space of six years, to perfect the Stone"
Beyond that I only find descriptions of the pictures. |

I'm sure if you read the whole thing, it goes into more depth. It was a long entry, I didn't read it all. _________________

I searched the article..... it didn't clearly say beyond that. as in it only mentioned the snake on the cross when it was describing it. |
