Everything was running fine until i plugged in my friend's external hard disk. It showed a blue screen and before i was able to identify the error, my pc just turn off by itself. When i reboot the pc, BIOS detects my Maxtor HDD as Primary Master which is correct but it now fails the POST and displays "Primary drive failed". Pressed 1 to continue will then show "Plese insert boot disk".
I first thought about IDE cable failure or wrong jumper settings so i switched to another cable and checked the jumper setting. Still, the error exists and it's very little chance that my HDD died because BIOS still detects it. My next move was reinstalling Windows but Recovery Console couldn't detect my HDD. I had to install Windows on my Secondary Master HDD (which was used soley for storing anime). After booting into Windows from my second hard disk, my computer shows the Primary HDD as Volume E (it was C:). Everything's still there but most of the softwares are useless since the registry is clean.
This convinced me that my HDD didn't die so i tried to reinstall Windows again and this time, it detects my Primary HDD and the installation was a success. I was sure that the problem was fixed by sadly, it still fails the POST.
Now i have to boot from Secondary Master and use the boot.ini to start Windows with my Primary HDD's profile. Any help would be highly appreciated, thanks. _________________ What's yours is mine, what's mine is still mine.

Luc, BIOS detection does not necessarily means that your HDD does not fail, but when you said reinstalling works, then that means you HDD is not dead, but probably dying, but let's assume that it is the worst case scenario.
If your HDD still fails POST test, but still able to boot Windows, it could either be BIOS and/or CMOS battery issue, probably. Have you tried to remove the CMOS battery or replacing it with new battery? _________________ Innocent Tranquility

The hard disk is working fine at the moment. I ran Maxtor's hard drive diagnostic tool just to be sure and the result shows that it's in good condition. That excludes the possiblity of a dying HDD.
I will try remove the CMOS battery and reset BIOS settings. _________________ What's yours is mine, what's mine is still mine.

No luck, the problem remains.
I tried another hard disk as Primary Master and didn't have that problem. The problem could be the hard disk like some vital system files were corrupted or deleted when i plugged in my friend's external HDD. It's clean from viruses and trojans so i have no idea why it caused a BSOD.
Too bad i don't have System Restore enabled or i could try going back to time. _________________ What's yours is mine, what's mine is still mine.

Looks like the system file information of the HDD is corrupted. If that is the case, you may need to ask the manufacturer of the HDD for advise whether they have other alternatives other than replacing the HDD.
If that is the case, I don't think System Restore will do the trick though. _________________ Innocent Tranquility
