The most common transcribation system is called the Hepburn system. It's that one that the book which the above scans are from uses, so just save those pictures to your computer or something and look at them now and then to get a feel for how you transcribe it or something! ^_^
I dunno how many others than me on this site that speak Japanese to some extent, but perhaps we could make some kind of Q&A thread about the Japanese language in general, grammar etc. where anyone can ask and/or answer questions? O.o
I find teaching very fun, which is of course part of why I wrote this to begin with, so I'd be happy to help further! It helps me get better too! ^_^ _________________ 秘密ã?¨ã?¯å¯†ã?‹ã?«éš ã?—ã?¦äººã?«çŸ¥ã‚‰ã?ªã?„事を言ã?†ã?®ã?

Dear Ropponmatsu,
Cna you give us some overview for their(japan) keyboard system (for computer)
Other than the romaji version
does we still use the space to change the hiragana /kana to kanji?
and lastlly what is the use of some extra keys that normal keyboard doesn't have?
Sincerely,

While I do have a Japanese keyboard, I have yet to install it, and I'm currently using a standard Swedish layout.
[IMG:700:240:53fe35f3e4]http://jcmc.indiana.edu/vol9/issue1/Japanese_Keyboard.gif[/img:53fe35f3e4]
Here however, is a picture I found on google (battery for my cam was dead -.-; ) on the Japanese keyboard layout.
Since I do not live in Japan, I havn't had much chance to actually use a Japanese keyboard, so the layout's about as much as I can do I'm afraid... ^.^; _________________ 秘密ã?¨ã?¯å¯†ã?‹ã?«éš ã?—ã?¦äººã?«çŸ¥ã‚‰ã?ªã?„事を言ã?†ã?®ã?

ã?“ã‚“ã?«ã?¡ã?¯!!
Nice thread and hope it keep lively. I don't have any question right now since you wrote so much about it ^__^
I didn't finished reading it all due to college work and my laziness. I used to steal Jap letters from other forum whom giving kind of lessons, only some words. e.g.
春 - る - haru (Spring)
 -  - natsu (Summer)
秋 - ã?‚ã?? - aki (Autumn)
冬 - ゆ - fuyu (Winter)
I need to have its dictionary in case I become serious in learning it.
I didn't finish mastering English so how can I master others >__>;
I'll make sure to come here if I have any question about it. So as for now り for your hard work on writing this. _________________

I'm sure alot of people do not agree with me, but I find Japanese to be easier than English (disregarding kanji), because of it's logic. In Japanese, when you learn why something is a certain way, you understand why it is that way. There are no strange pronunciations, everything is spelled the way it's pronuonced. No "though" vs "tough" that is... '>.>
The only reason why English is easier to learn, is that it is the no.1 language in media around the world. fO.o _________________ 秘密ã?¨ã?¯å¯†ã?‹ã?«éš ã?—ã?¦äººã?«çŸ¥ã‚‰ã?ªã?„事を言ã?†ã?®ã?

i agree. i love how jap is written how its pronounced. i only
hate the iffy katakana translations because sometimes i find
i have no idea wth they're trying to say.
as for the japanese keyboard. personally while in japan and
using an internet cafe, it was super annoying typing in english
because theres this little button you can press by mistake and
everything will change to japanese according to how you type
it <____<". but i love japanese internet cafes, they're so cute!
as for anyone who wants to meet japanese people to learn jap
from, myspace is actually a great place. for one a lot of japanese
and korean people really want to learn english and so you can
totally trade in knowledge.
or you can go to japan and hopefully meet someone , gaming
online also works~ (p.s. japanese people are so shy...) _________________ "The basis of optimism is sheer terror."

As for myself, I'm trying to figure out the name of the program my university uses, where you, as Spankit said, write with roman letters according to the hepburn transcribation method, and then change the text into kana and kanji using various keyboard commands. That way I could write everything with just one keyboard. ^_^
However my teachers only know how to use the program, not what it's called... '>.>
Guess I'll have a chat with technical next time... ^.^; _________________ 秘密ã?¨ã?¯å¯†ã?‹ã?«éš ã?—ã?¦äººã?«çŸ¥ã‚‰ã?ªã?„事を言ã?†ã?®ã?

well roppon.
can't you just add the language on windows
and it should function the same? except you
change the thing to either hiragana/katakana. _________________ "The basis of optimism is sheer terror."

Very insightful; I really do want to learn the Japanese writing system, and those pics really help alot for super newbies at the 3 writing systems. Also, 10, 000 kanji? That is too insane. I look forward to learning this language, and how to pronounce full sentences phonetically. _________________ FagWreck |

Microsoft IME (Input Method Editor) is quite handy once you master basic Japanese. You can easily type out the katakana/hiragana/kanji characters using Romaji.
Since I use Japanese applications often, I switched my default language to Japanese and the only downside to this is the backslash has turned into Yen symbol : P

I got Microsoft IME, it just doesn't work! T_T
Give me hacking skills... '>.>
I've spent hours trying to make it even write a single kana, but all that happens is that my layout get's changed to Japanese romaji input... -''-;
The function keys' don't change at all, so I can't convert the romaji that way either.. '>.>
Ps.
In case anyone is wondering where I get my kana and kanji when I can't write them, I input them using the character map. You can't imagine how annoying it is to write full sentences using that... -.-;
*Goes off to sulk in a corner after yet another try at making IME work*
Edit:
ややI managed to get it to work!
*Goes off to celebrate*
Edit2:
(Problem was that I hadn't selected 'extended toolbar', so I couldn't set it to hiragana input '>.> )
Edit3:
@Lucifer
I use keyboard shortcuts to switch between normal and j/p layout, that way you don't experience that problem. ^_^ _________________ 秘密ã?¨ã?¯å¯†ã?‹ã?«éš ã?—ã?¦äººã?«çŸ¥ã‚‰ã?ªã?„事を言ã?†ã?®ã?

roppon - haha LOSER~
i just get too lazy to click to type romanji into jap.
honestly though i find that the actual characters give
it a je ne sais quoi towards the language. except
most japanese people just go:
genki desu ka!?
anywhoo congrats on getting it O(≧∇≦)O _________________ "The basis of optimism is sheer terror."

One wouldn't think it necessary to extend the toolbar to be able to write in the language that is currently active... T_T

I don't speak French, nor am I otherwise familiar with that expression, so I have no idea what you're trying to say. ^.^; _________________ 秘密ã?¨ã?¯å¯†ã?‹ã?«éš ã?—ã?¦äººã?«çŸ¥ã‚‰ã?ªã?„事を言ã?†ã?®ã?
