I had a bumpy start for my first semester. The work in the subjects I did for semester one, I did most of it in senior during high school. So yeah I skipped lots of lectures and didn't do a lot of study until the couple days before the finals... my gosh that was hell ~ and my timetable was quite terrible... like I'd have to get up at 5:30am for a 8am lecture, then I wouldn't get home till 7pmish coz my last lecture finished at 6pm.

Depending on what you do, it can be very interesting... but it can also be very intereting. Like I'm enjoying anatomy and physiology, but I HATE organic chem ... and who you have as lecturers really influence that ...

I've been 'trying' to study when I get home~ but I know it never happens haha. The key is to try to understand it when you get taught it so when you do go to study it, you only have to learn it >.> if that makes sense ...

first semester in college:

- my first time failing a course
- worse, i've failed 2 of them

but as persistent (and arrogant) as i am, i've pursued and now i'm on my 3rd year in college Smile

one thing you need in university life is PERSEVERANCE! Very Happy

do it with all your might even if it means failing a course or two (well, just don't take it REALLY literally.)

Like NeL, I'm on my 3rd year of university now (how I got this far I shall never know...)

University life can be both interesting but at the same time a complete pain in the arse. There are lots of factors that influence it. How your schedule is like, what courses you have, the professors you have. Those are the things that can make a semester fly by or just limp along very slowly and painfully. For example, if you have a semester loaded with difficult courses, it can really give you tons of stress and consequently just make it seem like you've reached hell on earth.

Ways to overcome it of course is to plan out your schedule. In the end it really helps. Usually, your professors give you a basic outline of what to expect during the semester, such as dates for quizzes, exams, and due dates of assignments. Along with this are your assigned readings and such. So this really gives you tons of time to plan your days around this work.

This allows for time to hang out with your friends or to just relax on your own (which really helps to lower your stress levels) and lets you keep up with your school work. You really want to avoid overloading yourself with work because there will be times when you'll have several things coming up at once and that stress is liable to make you crash and burn.

As for the readings of the textbook, that really varies for me. At times, the readings in courses is more for the reinforcement of certain kinds of theories and concepts. So if you have a really good grasp at the material, there really isn't any need to do the readings. But if you are a bit iffy on certain things, it's good to go over it in the text just to get a better understanding of it. So for those courses I only read the text when I feel I need to.

However, if you take a course where it is absolutely essential to read the textbook, for example a course in the social sciences, it's best to keep up with the reading. Reading just before the exams is not really recommended since you tend to forget things more easily (I've done this before -_-). So, just set aside some time a day or a week to read the assigned chapters which lets you remember the material a lot better and in the end makes you less stressful and a whole lot happier. ^_^

Lol...I know how you feel.
Don't you just love all the mechanisms you need to learn Rolling Eyes
(I just finished the first part of Orgo Chem last semester....and am currently taking the second part...Oh joy....but at least I don't need to do the third part...bwahahaha)

Uni or College is great. At first I had this bad feeling about it, but it tured out to be fun and intersting way to waste your time studying on subjects you like.

There isnt any hw (oh how I missed hw). There are assignment about reading this or that book or search for something which I really hate the most. Nothing can be found! --->I'm a bad searcher.

enjoyable but kinda boring in a way

is it interesting or boring?

i never overcome it, it just occur to me

do always study again (read the textbook) after went home from university??
or read before the exam time only?
you can't really do both of them the best i can say is in the middle
do the assignment DON'T BE LATE
do the HOMEWORK!
and you will be fine for most of the Course EXCEPT for DOCTOR(this one require you to study night and day to overcome it) and of course some other course that i dont even know they exist

Its boring, bad, terrible, nightmare,..etc if your not enjoying it or at least have no interest on it. How much you like the uni you joined is related to how interesting it can be.

How to overcome it? well get along with it.

Actually I don't find my college that bad since its system is way better than the school but I'm a bit lazy and the drill is controlling all my mind day and night. Wish these days pass faster *sigh* never thought teaching is that troublesome.

I found it interesting because I was taking classes on subjects I finally enjoyed. The classes I signed up for were specifically for one topic and it was usually something that appealed to me.

I would read my textbook before each class, then take notes during class lectures. When it came closer to test-time, I would usually just study my notes, then skim the textbook again for key-words.

College is a lot more different than high school because, to me, it was more about actually learning than it was about getting good grades. The classes I was taking was more about getting me prepared for my future, as opposed to just learning what the state told me I should know... not that I did bad in high school, but it's hard to get interested in stuff I don't think I'm going to use in my career.

Since college is optional, if you're really not enjoying it, then you should probably drop out until you're sure you know what you want to do. I know too many people who keep changing their minds halfway through programs, and they just end up wasting time and money.

I'm a first year so I'm still getting my university experince, but what i can say is that the time is a lot more linient so it all boils down to the amount of effort you put in. Sadly, i don't have the iniative to work so i barely study and slack off most of the time and thus, achieve medicore marks

however, its a lot of fun making new friends and you can hang out like...24/7 if you really wanted to. course i'm underage so i can't really do anything crazy like drink so thats a downside to being young.

My university life sucks.

For some reasons I will not disclose, I am attending UMD (Maryland). Although I have gotten in to other schools such as UCSD (San Diego) or UCD (Davis)... and my home that I went to high school and stuff in was in California...

So, I'm here in Maryland, without good Asian food, without my bmw 5 series, without my disposable income, and without a sh*t ton of my friends and network. /sigh

Sucks.

The reason why I've adopted the name anime fan is because I have no survival instincts at all when it comes to anime. Yeah... my first piece of advice!

Don't starve yourself because you want to buy three anime box sets, three separate DVDs, and a hundred dollars worth of manga. O_O

*ahem* I mean... university is not all that bad. I'm on my second year now and well... I struggled through my first year due to an array of difficulties mentally. Specifically, I was very unmotivated and disillusioned on the point of attending classes.

I too experienced a complete change in life. I went to a small-ish high school of about 1500 students where nearly everyone knew me by name to a university that has over 40,000 students. On top of that, my imagined and most ideal form of college-level education was completely thrown out the door. Yeah, that was a sad moment.

But you know? There came a point where I knew that it wasn't the fault of the school, who had been this way from the get-go, but it was me, who wanted to reject this new life.

Yeah, eventually, I decided that I wouldn't lose out and that I'd live as best as I could.

sukebesama, no matter where you go, there'll always be a place where you can find good asian food or a means to make it yourself. I know you can do it. :]

Ahaha, I guess sneaking one in would not sit well with you. *sweatdrops*

Yeah, for me, I go to school in New York City, so food, no matter what type of cuisine, is never a problem for me.

However, I did have my own rice cooker. Because it's not considered a type of "furniture" and it's not a toaster oven, I got away by saying it's this nifty-looking round thing. Yep, I like ignorant people somtimes.

haha, shoulda told them it's a CD-player from the 1950s.... or a time-machine. You can mix it up a bit ^___^

I went to commuter school, so I didn't get the joy (or horror) of staying in a dorm. Instead, my daily routine was:

- get up at 5:45am
- shower, breakfast is for the weak
- leave house by 6:15am
- drive car to train station, arrive by 6:35am
- ride commuter-rail train, arrive in Boston by 7:35am (try to stay awake to read)
- ride subway train, arrive in Dorchester by 7:50am
- ride shuttle bus, arrive on campus by 8:10am
- walk to classroom, sit down at desk by 8:25am
- class starts 8:30
- classes every hour on the half until 1:30pm
- leave campus, repeat everything above in reverse, arrive home 4pm

luckily I only had to do that 3 times a week... then I got wise and adjusted it to a 2-day schedule.
