This thing has been bugging me for sometime, even though we've discussed it in our sociology class long long time ago...
is Japanese pop culture really "Japanese" or is it just Japan's own way of "westernization"?
The point is, whenever there are cosplays, some very flashy lights, some cute things, very "poppy" music and so on, we, without hesitation, will say it's
"jpop!" and we categorized them as different as other cultures. But something tells me that if westerners didn't bug of the japanese islands long long time ago, maybe we wouldn't have that popular far eastern culture we all loved and patronized.
note: please feel free to move this thread if it's not in it's right place thanks
jpop to me. is defined because its its pop in japanese.
hence jpop. i'm not sure if i'm the only one that think
that.
what you're getting at however i think, isn't just jpop
but the japanese subcultures. cosplay, visual kei, etc.
in essence i'd say we all copy from each other. i mean
in the 'western world' we have punk rock bands that
also use make up, we have people who dress up
(im thinking KISS here) etc. etc. but i mean you can't
really say japanese culture is the way it is because of
western civilizations. i mean vice versa, i don't think
western civilizations would be the way it is without the
eastern ones. also you'd have to find out exactly when
each of the fads started in which ever said to say it belongs
to a certain culture.
fashion-wise itself we see different cultures wearing
different things, and yet somehow the styles blend and
thats what we get today. i mean the asian ones are copied
by a lot of the western ones, while somewhere in the mix
people are copying europeans.
those stockings with shoes/boots girls are wearing here, it
was long ago in japan, those heels with long socks and short
skirts? that started in japan too. but also at the same time
wide legged pants that are hip right now, they were back from
the 60s with the hippies and what not.
everything kinda goes in circles so no. i wouldn't say that
japanese people are creating things because of westernization.
however i do see that they do somewhat idolize caucasians.
in physical features a lot definitely. however my impression of
the japanese is that they always try and take things from other
'cultures' and form it into their own by improving it. ie kanji sys. _________________ "The basis of optimism is sheer terror."

as far as I understand, japan is just using up our fashions from a decade or so ago mixed with a bit of their traditions and our current trends.
its not by a unconscious effort (for the most part) but rather by osmosis. _________________ If violence isn't the answer, you didn't use enough.
Most people operate under a fundamental misconception:
they believe most if not all people are good
It is saddly verry much not so.
