So, that lady got kind of... screwed over for life.
I mean, $220,000 for a single mother? (Mind you, a normal singe person; I personally can pay that several times over)
"Thomas denied even having an account on Kazaa."
Hah. They got her IP address, took down the files that were on her computer at the time, and she even had the Kazaa program running on her computer. Seriously, how dumb can people get with this.
Well, this whole issue raises that whole moral thing about file sharing. Although I still hate the RIAA for charging people like this, people also need to be smart, eh?

ouch... that lady got burned.
if she's smart, she should take the 10% option and get out while the bill just $22,200 and not try to fight it. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

The sad thing is that she is trying to fight it.
And she's got a lot of sympathy from other file sharers, college students, and others from 18-25 years old. Then, there's the fact that they have little power and cannot influence the decision.
There's also the part where the RIAA is trying to make an example of her. They are doing everything in their power to show that they pwn her.
Then again, using Kazaa, that action alone is dumb enough to do this to people... ... eh...

she's a retard then and deserves a bigger punishment. She broke the law, she's totally wrong in this. Why would she think she deserves to be let off the hook?

they don't support "her", they support "themselves"... they know they're next on the RIAA's hit-list

and they definitely should.

haha, I used to have Kazaa, but I think I had like a grand total of like 20 songs. I shut off my "share with others" option which is what protects me since the actual crime isn't TAKING illegal songs, but GIVING them away to others. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

The thing is, most people don't realize that almost all internet companies are giving their IP information to investigators. Switch to uh... crap I forgot the name of that one company that doesn't give the IP information... oh well, it's not like anyone on the forum needs it.
Oh man, this is the conclusion to the news post about the first individual trying to fight the RIAA in court.
RIAA is stupid. The law is sometimes stupid as well. Internet is changing the face on how the world works now.
Don't take the high ground just because you don't share music files. Anime is the same thing. Things like watching TV or other copyrighted things uploaded by users other than the creator is the same thing.
Technology and time changes everything and that is why we still have some stupid archane laws.
This really sucks for her, she was trying to fight the system. I thought she would of fought it directly and not claim ignorance which was just stupid.
I'm glad I live in Canada.
Music file sharing is currently legal in Canada both uploading and downloading as long as its for personal use and you're not actively advertising uploads but passively making your directory available to others to search.
Also ISPs are not required to give out information about their costumers. _________________
The lady that's getting sued isn't doing anything revolutionary. Stealing is simply stealing and hurting business is simply that too. If she's hurting the music industry's business, (her and many other people) then they want to find an example to make out of someone AND they want to scare some people pantless.
In the end, it depends on what type of person you are. Are you the type of person who listens to a song, likes it, and therefore, goes out and buys the entire CD? Or, do you just steal songs and never bother to think about spending your money?
The same thing goes for anime. When that particular anime is licensed in America, will you go out and buy it or will you not because you already have a fansubbed version of it?
And in the end, SOMEONE doesn't buy those CDs and anime, the industry will die. -_-
Having a sampling and then promoting the business by going out and buying the stuff yourselves... that's ideally the greatest compromise the business can have with the people who want the goods. If this lady is merely taking the music and uploading it for others to steal on their own time, then of course someone out there will want to complain.
But yeah... she got pwned badly. _________________ [img:425:100:e0ea21b26c]http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c118/animefanrk2k/CWMashiba.jpg[/img:e0ea21b26c]

But for some reason, I don't pity her, even though she got pwned for the rest of her life. _________________ Did you call me ... A PERVERTED LOLICON OTAKU?!

Yeah, she got screwed, but I wouldn't say for the rest of her life. Bankruptcy will probably help her in this case, and then there's also out-of-court negotiation. The RIAA may be trying to make an example out of her, but they also know there's probably no way that this woman will be able to pay such a large amount. $220,000 is just a drop in the bucket for them. It doesn't really matter if they get the money or not, it's more about the message behind it. Even if she doesn't end up needing to pay a cent of that debt, she'll still be faced with some major inconveniences that'll follow her for the next 5-10 years of her life. Nothing that she couldn't survive, but troublesome none-the-less.
