Have anyone ever noticed that the back of any public transit buses are usually void or VERY spacious around the back of the bus? Whenever I go on the bus, theres always a LOT of seats free or a lot of room between people standing at the back of the bus while the front half of the bus is just crammed with people. So I'd like to hear from people just why people NEVER cram together more often at the back without the driver yelling people to get to the back of the bus.
This problem seriously pisses me off during peak hours when I can't even get on the bus due to the fact that people never actually try to actually pack together more tightly at the back and allow more people on the bus. |

I don't ride the bus often, but the few times I have, I never really thought about where to sit. I usually just grab the first seat I see... so I guess MY answer is that I'm lazy. Of course though, I always notice that people will STAND in the front even before the back is filled. I never really thought about why that was... maybe it's the scary people... and the dead bodies. _________________

many people feel watched when they walk in the bus...so they go on the bus in front...walk a bit...feel weird b/c theay are being watched (mostly peolpe w/o increadible self-confidence)..and sit down or stop at some point because they feel more comfortible standing there than being watched even a few seconds more...
and even if you sit in the back...since there is so much room, it would be weird to sit next to or near someone you don't even know...so that they leave some space between them....
that's my opinion.... _________________ [IMG:338:120:3d94243a9b]http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/6072/70939132oo8.png[/img:3d94243a9b]

Hmm...I've noticed this too when I take the transit in my city. Although the seating is usually spread out. But once all the seats on the bus are taken...it's fairly common for people to prefer to stand near the front of the bus.
Now, I don't find this problematic if it's just a few people who are standing there...but this can be annoying during peak hours. But mainly I think it's just because it can be pretty uncomfortable to be crammed in the back of the bus. For one thing, the aisle in which you stand in is relatively small to begin with. Once you're crammed back there, you'd be jostled every once in awhile when people trying to move past you when they want to get off the bus. And getting off the bus when you want to can be difficult as well because you need to push through a crowd of people with very limited space to work with to get to the exit.
In general, people probably feel more comfortable near the front of the bus because: 1) there is usually more space near the front, 2) it's easier to exit the bus when you need to.
I think those are probably the main reasons why people do it. But I agree...if you know there is a crowd of people behind you wanting to get on the bus, people should just suck it up and go to the back. I mean...if it were you standing outside waiting to get on the bus...you wouldn't want to be turned away because there is no space in the bus...when in reality there is but people aren't willing to make it. |

for most people, a ride in the bus is not an event. they are usually just there for the short, (mostly) hassle free transit from one part of town to another. for this reason, people are most likely to grab the most convinient seat when they board, meaning near the front and middle sections of the bus. unless people know they're in for a long ride, they want to be on and off the bus as quickly as possible. _________________

weird... what you guys are saying doesn't seem to apply to the transit system of the vancouver area... ANY part of the bus will be occupied... front seats for old people and the middle to the back with the whole assortment of preppy, emo, weirdo, young, middle aged, and/or feeling young people...
and the moment the seats are all taken the driver would not wait for people to cram the front, they would yell at them to move back...
and i think also that the fact that we have an exit right near the back of the bus helps with people who are trying to make a quick exit be enticed to settle in the back... _________________

I live in Vancouver too... try waiting for the bus infront of the school/college/uni at 2:30-3:30...
I wasted about 30 mins with 6 buses full and i couldn't even squeeze on... each time the bus goes on, I would see a HUGE chunk of space at the back which no one seems to try to get to. If you know what i mean, Lemme try to draw a diagram:
|__........L <-- rear door
|__....__|
|__....__|
||....*...||
||....*...|| *Empty area
|______|
Sorry if its a bit crude This refers to the Vancouver local buses |

Simplest reason would be people want to be close to the exits. If you have to go all the way to the back, you have to push past people that are closer to the door. The reason why people that are already standing near the door don't want to stand nearer to the back, is then they would have to force their way through all the people between them and the door in order to get off.
I can guarantee, if there were a door in the extreme back of the bus (we're not talking school buses here people), people would move to the back, because they are able to get out just as easily.
No one wants to have to push past people in order to get out, and why push past people to get a place to stand, when you're already standing, and can save yourself the trouble of having to push your way back out afterwards?
Bottom line: It's just more convenient to be by the door. |

With some of the buses we have over here, the spacious 'standing area' is up towards the front and that's close to both doors.
But when there is lots of room on the bus I prefer to sit 6 sits from the back~ just a wierd preference of mine _________________ Get ready to vote for who you think is the Sexiest Anime Character!! |

I'm feeling a bit noobish because of all those huge post counts
But I'll post anyways.
So I live in Oulu, Finland and our busses have three exits. One in the front, one in the middle and one in the back. And because no one wants to sit next to someone they don't know people tend to avoid other people if possible. Because of that our busses have only have the window seats occupied and then everyone has some kind of bag on the other seat. And if someone tries to sit there, we just flash a scary face and they go away. But if it's a cold morning, the bus is just packed to the fullest and a little bit more and everyone hates each other ^^ |

i always take the bus when going to college, well about the back seat bus conundrum...
well, the buses i always ride are so long and as lazy as i am, i tend to seat as close in the front as possible.
also, the engine noise is more unbearable in the back, mainly because buses engines are mounted in the rear. |

If its an international bus then of course. Many bad and scary people build their homes at the back of the bus. So I prevent making any troubles.
I dont know why those people like to sit in that place. But for me, if I have something prohibited (not in a bad way) and I dont waant anyone to see it I rather go sit at the back alongside with them -___-
I had this incident once when I was in school. Gilrs were standing near from the driver while the empty seats at the back. I couldnt walk to get to the empty seats so I was forced to stay with them and they were pushing me left and right as the bus drives >.>
Honestly, dont sit at the back. _________________ "Blogger" |
