I saw this picture of a character I found randomly on a wallpaper website. (I completely forgot the artist, and I cant find the wallie again, gomen, I dont take credit for this!), and for some reason it really clicked with me. So much that I wrote a back story for her randomly, and Im even thinking of writing short adventures with her. This is what I wrote so far, as a minor backstory. Its still rough, so be gentle. ^^

Born into a very wealthy family, Sophia was the epitome of happiness. Her parents adored her, her friends looked up to her, and she could get anything she wanted. She was beautiful, very intelligent, and always seemingly unapproachable. But at the same time, she remained humble, giving, caring, and loving. This earned her the respect and admiration from almost everyone she came into contact with. But Sophia always held a secret. At her core, she didn’t like anyone. She didn’t trust anyone. She didn’t like herself. She didn’t like most of the world. She held malice in her heart. She despised the way people idolized her. Even though she was surrounded by people who loved her, and she knew that they did, she just couldn’t be happy because she didn’t believe them. Over time, she became increasingly disillusioned with life, and she convinced herself that she was all alone with her thoughts. Until one fateful encounter.

At the age of 17, she met Elena, a beautiful 16 year old blind girl she found wandering the streets alone in a stupor. Her clothes were ragged and dirty, her hair a matted mess, it was obvious that she had been sexually assaulted. But her eyes were what caught Sophia's attention. They were completely devoid of feeling. She expected hate, anger, even pain, but there was nothing at all. Immediately Sophia went to her and took her under her care. There was something about her spirit that just drew Sophia in. At first Elena kept silent while Sophia took care of her, but steadily she began to talk, but her words were arrows to Sophia’s heart. Elena was actually the most honest, kind, and caring person Sophia had ever met, and she spoke nothing but good things about everything. Sophia couldn’t understand how she could be this way. Elena had nothing but pain in her life, and she was happier to be alive than Sophia was. She just couldn’t understand it at all.

Elena continued to live with Sophia for the next year and a half. Sophia continued to become very attached to her, and Elena seemed to do the same. No matter where she went, Elena wanted to go. Whenever Sophia would leave, Elena would revert back to how Sophia found her, comatose and unbearably sad. She became so attached to her that Elena wouldn’t sleep unless it was next to her, holding onto her arm. Sophia didn’t understand her own feelings. On one hand, she was fascinated by Elena, and wanted to understand how she could be the way she was. On the other hand, part of her hated the way she so easily handled the hardships of life without anything, while she was stuck in a static state, always thinking horrible things about everyone. But one thing was certain. When Elena was with her, she felt at ease. Like, even though her view of the world hadn’t been softened, Elena was a bright light amidst darkness. Even though Elena was blind, she constantly reminded Sophia that she was beautiful. She had heard it many times before, but never believed anyone until now.

One fateful night while Sophia lay awake staring at Elena, the most painful, and wonderful moment of her entire life occurred. Elena put her hands on her cheeks, brought her close and said “You’re so beautiful. You have everything that anyone could ever want. Why……are you so sad? You’re in more pain than I am. Nobody had ever been able to tell what she had been feeling before. Nobody had ever seen through her mask before. All of a sudden, Sophia cried for the first time in her life. She cried for all the years of her life she wasted being unhappy, for all the years she spent alone in her room. But most of all, she cried because someone finally saw how sad she really was. Somebody finally asked her…..it was then that they shared their first kiss, and Sophia finally realized what she was feeling. She was in love with her. The small hate she felt for her was nothing but her wanting Elena for herself….not out of jealously or curiosity. She wanted her….and Sophia always got what she wanted.

Sophia and Elena led a blissful life from then, for over 4 years. Sophia had never been happier, truly happy. She and Elena shared everything together, and even made plans for a makeshift wedding. The day finally arrived, and it was beautiful. Everything was perfectly executed. It was their wedding night. As they made their way up the stairs to their suite, arm in arm, staring lovingly into each other’s eyes…..a massive wave of pain went over Sophia’s body. Images of fire, blood, chains, and torment flashed through her head. She saw her parents lying in pieces in their home. She saw Elena surrounded by an ocean of fire, screaming in pain. She could faintly hear Elena’s voice in the distance, but she couldn’t see her. Finally the pain became too great, and Sophia began to lose consciousness. The last thing she saw before she went under was Elena reaching for her as a dark shadow was taking her away, screaming Sophia’s name over and over.

She awoke in a cell made of flesh, bound and gagged with chains. Outside her cell…was hell. She could hear bloodcurdling screams echoing through her head, she could see dark figures in the distance being ripped apart by enormous monsters. She could hear whispering voices in her head….speaking a language she couldn’t understand. Every time she closed her eyes, she would see horrible images, as if they were happening with her eyes open. For what seemed like days, she suffered this fate without rest, or a thought of her own. Finally, the images stopped, she opened her eyes, only to become face to face with a monstrous demon overlord. The demons name was Thamuz, the weapon lord, and he told Sophia that her life belonged to him now. Sophia was released from her bonds, mentally broken and in a drooling stupor. Thamuz was planning on taking full advantage of this, and told her everything while her mind was still in chaos.

Sophia was not human. Not entirely. She was actually a half-human, half-demon hybrid, known as a Rinyeld in the demon tongue. Her father was a demon named Alocer, who raped the woman she knew as her mother on the Feast of the BloodMoon, a demonic festival on which the moon of the demon realm literally bleeds upon the land, and this blood fills all demons with unusual sexual drive and a massive appetite for human flesh. Most demons seek humans to feed on and rape, although some demons choose to stay and mate there. Alocer is known for causing mass havoc in the human realm and in the demon realm every Feast. Whenever he returned drunk on blood and sex, he became extremely destructive which in turn led to numerous deaths to those who tried to stop him. In an attempt to limit casualties to the demon brethren, Thamuz limited Alocer’s time in the human realm, and warned him that if he killed more than 20 humans that night, he would be punished. Just as luck would have it, by the time Alocer reached Sophia’s mother, he had reached his limit of kills. Her life was spared, but his seed was planted in her womb. Usually this practice is forbidden, and even if a demon was to do this the child and mother would be eliminated as soon as its existence was known, for fear of the child rising against them. But somehow Sophia’s presence was never noticed. Until now.

According to Thamuz, he actually saved Sophia and Elena from being feasted upon and raped by demons, since their wedding night was the same night of the Feast. And nothing tastes better to a demon than the soul of a young human in love. Thamuz saved Sophia, because her half-breed powers are immeasurable and indispensible. No demon or human knows exactly how it works, but unlike normal demons half-breeds have no limit to their power. They can constantly grow and continually get stronger without any restraints. Also, Rinyelds were immune to many demonic spells, including mind control, possession, and various other dark magics. With her power at his control, Thamuz planned to conquer the demon realm one region at a time, and since no other overlord was aware of her existence, he could keep her a secret until his plan was in place. Sophia listened to all of this, and was unable to mount a response. Most of this information was not absorbed due to her mental instability at this point. Thamuz presented Sophia with a choice. Serve him and Elena would live. Refuse and she would watch Elena suffer for eternity.

As soon as Sophia heard the name of her love, her mind quickly mended itself. She rose from the blood soaked ground, stared the demon in the face and asked where Elena was. Not just asked, demanded to know where she was. Thamuz reluctantly obliged, and took her to Elena’s prison. There she was chained to a twisted demonic cross, her beautiful wedding dress ragged and blood stained, her hair matted and in disarray, her face devoid of feeling, just like when they first met. Sophia burst into tears as she grasped the bars that separated them and cried out her name, and at that moment life returned to Elena’s face. Elena smiled, at her, and before she faded from her sight, she said “I love you Sophia. That was the first time she had ever said that to her, even though she knew that she did. Thamuz told her that Elena would die at his whim.

Elena spent the next 10 years training with various demon masters. Some of them were evil right down to the core. Some of them tortured her for months, then healed her body to repeat the process. Some demons actually taught her well, and treated her like kin. Most could not stand the sight of her. All feared her. She learned weapons techniques from Thamuz the weapon lord. She learned magic spells, curses, hexes, and incantations from Leonard, master of black magic and sorcery. She traded her right eye for a spell that enhanced her speed, power, and reaction time. Ronove the demon of languages taught her every language she would ever need, including the demon tongue. Sophia was being molded into a machine of destruction, a very capable killing machine. But the only thing that kept Sophia alive was the thought of Elena’s beautiful face smiling at her, telling her that she loved her.

She only had one true ally in this place, and that was Nybbas, the manager of dreams and visions and a very wise sage. During the first years of her training, Sophia was haunted by this place even in her dreams. It was Nybbas that taught her how to manipulate her dreams to as she saw fit. Every night she would dream of Elena, and holding her again. Nybaas also provided relief for her in her darkest times by providing visions of one of the possible futures for her, which had Sophia defeating every demon lord in her way and rescuing Elena from her cage. Nybbas was also the one who relayed how much power she really had over Thamuz and the rest of the demons. Since she was immune to demonic mind control and all other forms of mental manipulation, if she were to get as strong as Thamuz claimed she could, there wouldn’t be anything anyone in that realm could do to stop her. But as she was, she was no match for the upper ranks of the demon realm. But there was one way….to become stronger than all of them…

After Thamuz deemed that she was ready to take on tasks, he sent her all over the demon realm to suppress uprisings, assassinate key leaders of the opposition. Sophia proved to be more than a match for his tests, and she always returned unscathed. Every time she returned unharmed, Thamuz congratulated her, but always reminded her that she held Elena’s life in his hands. This continued for 20 years……20 years of service to Thamuz, and many more on the horizon. All human prisoners, even Rinyelds had a spell cast on them that gave them eternal life as long as they breathed the cursed air in the demon realm, so that the torment they faced would last forever. At one point during this endless murder cycle, it was more than Sophia could take, and she erupted into a mad rampage, killing dozens of lower demons and rushing Thamuz in a blind rage. In that brief moment of rage, she caught a glimpse of his face. It was fear. She had never seen fear in a demons face until now. It was in that brief moment that she realized even he feared her power, just like the other demons did. No….they feared her potential. She was still much too weak to make a difference. This was proved by her complete and utter defeat in just one blow of Thamuz’s fists.

The punishment she suffered after this attack was nothing. Wounds heal, pain subsides. But the image of Thamuz’s face was burned into her mind. He feared her, the little Rinyeld from the earth realm scared an ancient all powerful demon. She could get stronger. Strong enough to kill Thamuz. Strong enough to kill Leonard. Strong enough to save Elena. She had to get stronger. It was the quest for strength that brought Sophia Seldania to this new world, to the town of Dunwick. Thamuz had given her as much time as she wanted, as long as she eliminated as many targets as he dictated. Taking the advice given by Nybbas, she sought out this person with the key to unlocking her demonic potential.

“I will kill you, Thamuz., smiling silently as she walked into the fog. “Then, I’m coming after you…..father.
