hey, glad to see you survived. Seems like you had a fun time. Hope my lessons helped ^___^V

Yay, been back for a few days, but my trip to Tokyo was AWESOME. I knew that Akiba was anime/electronics central, but one will never understand the true awesomeness (if you are a otaku) of it until one actually goes there.

yeah... I've seen photos... imagine a full-size department store with NOTHING but anime and manga stuff. Spankit took photos last time she went and had a shot of what looked like a supermarket filled entirely with gachapon figures. O__O

Anyways, i didn't really feel like doing much, so she explained to me convenience stores and how they were a bit different in Japan. Well, at least they were exactly how they are portrayed in anime. I got green tea and my first onigiri (flavored tuna and mayo).

good to know. I'll be going to Japan this summer (hopefully living there), and I hear that people's lives revolve around convenience stores. You can get pretty much ANYTHING there... even pay your utility bills.

Literature
Newtype (came with free calendar with custom Lucky Star, Code Geass, Clannad, Gundam 00, and others I have no idea what they are; plus a planner with themed Gundam 00 pages)

nice... I'll be on the hunt for School Days manga volume 1.... I got volume 2 when I was in NYC, but haven't found the first one yet.

Anyways, my trip was... weird. The guide book I had sucked since I didn't really have the money to eat at the places that they recommended and the maps lacked good markers to tell me exactly where I was. Heck, I wandered into a park in Harajuku trying to see whats inside of it and the stupid book actually made me walk around 2 miles on a SIDE ROUTE on the outside of the park, so I saw nothing. Then, the book never mentioned that there was a freaking temple there.

ouch... best advice is to always just ask a local

Other cities were pretty much the same. Though I actually ran into a bunch of arcades in Shinjuku and I finally realized how far arcade games have come. There are tons of Tekken 6 machines, Gundam Seed Destiny Rengoky vs. Zaft 2 Plus, Melty Blood, and Guilty Gear machines everywhere. I even got into this card based arcade game called MSGundam 0083 Card Builder.

did you leave Tokyo Metropolitan at all? Kyoto, perhaps?

Another high point on my trip was being there on New Years. I went to one temple right in front of the Tokyo Tower.

that's the experience of a lifetime right there

Then I mentioned Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu. All of a sudden Ota just yelled "YAH!" and gave me a huge thumbs up. It was hilarious, as we were eating the Japanese pancake things (dang, forgot the name).

I think my pronunication of it is FUBARed... I told my foreign-exchange students that I liked it, but it didn't register, but then the topic of Aya Hirano and "God Knows" came up and they were all like "OMG, we love Haruhi!!"

Quote:
We, Ota and I, basically bonded on that, since he loved that anime too. Then we sort of talked about how he loved Mikuru and my favorite character was Yuki. He also took the group to a maid cafe, supposedly the best in Akiba and he frequented to. I wasn't expecting too much, I was really surprised when I saw someone that I saw on TV there eariler. Dang, she was cute. We got to play a game of darts with her and got custom coasters with her signature and I got mine in Hiragana since she knew I wasn't Japanese and I could at least understand if it was written in hiragana. I also got the group's CD too, with a picture included and signatures from everyone in the group.

awesome. I know they don't allow photography, but getting a CD, a photo, and autograph surely makes up for it. Do you know the name of the cafe you went to?

Quote:
My friends also told me to get in with a bunch of Haruhi coplayers.

those girls were just walking the street like that? Only in Japan, I suppose.

2. You know the phrases: arigato, sutsureshimasu, and gomen and a basic understanding of Japanese

sutsureshimasu --> "shitsurei shimasu" (she-stray-she-mass)... also "sumimasen" also works, but the former is more polite

Another very much used word is "douzo"... which means "please (do so)"

thanks for sharing your adventure ^__^

Yah. The place I went to was near this Don Quixote in this main street on Akiba. It was called @home Cafe and there are like three different stories on the top. The 1st one had the people wearing kimonos and the other two stories had the typical maid outfits.

Also, unfortunately, i was unable to go out outside of Tokyo. I plan to go back after I graduate high school and see if my Japanese improved at all by trying to communicate with Ota. Hes trying to learn english too. I want to check out Kyoto and perhaps Hokkaido, maybe with a friend. So that even if we get lost, we could still have fun.
