I wrote a review a few days ago. Today I checked my account to see how many reviews I had written, and for which animes. I'm quite frankly amazed at how many shows I've watched and reviewed. All told, I realized that for each review I've written, there are probably 3 or 4 other animes that I watched, but didn't bother to write a review for.
Another thing I noticed, is that the last 4 reviews or so that I did, the shows all received a perfect score. I suddenly wondered, am I being too forgiving in scoring? I never used to just hand out perfect scores like this. I'm really not sure, however the most recent shows I reviewed, were ones I really enjoyed, so maybe thats it. I wonder, if I averaged the score I give animes, what it be.
Hmm. Anyway, no real point to this post, just some random thoughts I had about anime and about reviews. Feel free to share your own.
I think that generally, most reviewers are like you and rate shows from average to good. I suppose its because you wouldn't be watching an anime series in the first place unless you liked it. I mean, sure there are anime series that you love when you first start watching but grow to hate, but generally your attitude towards the series is consistent throughout. Me personally, I don't go out of my way to watch anime unless I'm sure I'll enjoy it or I'm REALLY bored, so most of my reviews are 8 and higher as well.
I also refrain from writting reviews unless the show really made me feeling something. I'll only write a review if it was a series I really really loved or really really hated. The 'meh' series don't get reviews from me because I find it hard to write about them.
Um. Anyways, my train of thought just crashed so thats all I have to say =p
Maybe it's a time when you seek series of your favourite genre? I'm kinda facing the same problem, so I'm hesitating to chain my third 10/10 review...
After all, if you only review 1/3 to 1/4 of series you reviewed, you still keep your 10s to a minimal... Still, if I went on for a long time without watching a series worth 10, I get kind of irritated ><

I think what Psikro said was right. Maybe you only watch animes that you like, but your like me ^^
Even if I watched any animes (I like or not) when it comes in writing reviews I just feel pity to give it low score. I start to like the series. Plus, why would I write reviews for animes I dont like. _________________ "Blogger"
I'll regret writing any review after I finish watching the anime. My thoughts will focus on the ending but later on I see the general meaning or general view of it. _________________

My own feeling is, that your initial impression is usually a bit more accurate. At least for me. Sure, I always have to be wary of over or under rating a show based on the ending. But generally, as time goes on, I tend to forget what it is I really liked or disliked about the show, leading me to give it points for nostalgia. Its only when I go back and watch it again that I remember why I enjoyed a particular show.
On the other hand, how rewatchable are some of these shows? And should that play a factor in reviews? For example, Gunslinger Girl was a horrible show that was fantastically well done. So much so that it got a great rating from me. Having said that, I will never, ever watch it again. In retrospect, maybe I should have taken a point off for the fact that I'll never watch the show again.
I'm having that kind of dilemma for School Days and Air TV. I didn't like enjoy the show, but I must admit it was very well done. In the end, I decided not to give it a high score, after all, if a show is incredibly well done but absolutely nodoby like the topic, there's no point of it making to the top 50 list.
I tend to share 50% of my points on how much I enjoy it (enjoyment factor), how much it deserves to be enjoyed (by other people) and for special cases like Ichigo Mashimaro I gave a +1 for the genre well done.
some> well, sometimes it's good to have a different opinion isn't it? For some rather controversial series, having scores from everyone, not just those who enjoyed it, might help give it a proper score. Of course, this is volunteer work anyway.

Molenir>>>If I would take a point off because I'll never rewatch the anime again then the many points will be taken. I mean I should write in my review that this anime doesnt need to be rewatch without taking off any points.
If I would devide the points:
1 if its worth to be rewatch.
Then what's the rest for?
For me it'd be 3 for the story, 3 for animation and 3 for characters, music and something like that ^^;
I dont like to give points.
du5ky-san>>>Your right.
For me I dont like to write review of anime I dislike. I would say my opinion, but never write review unless I liked something I wanted to mention. Oh well maybe its just me ^^; _________________ "Blogger"
For me the best time to write a review would be when I'm done watching it. It is true that I may be more objective if I let it sink in a bit and my score may change slightly, however my experience is that I'll forgot a number of important factors that should be included in the review and the readers should know about. I experienced that with Zero No Tsukaima and Seto no Hanayome; I put off writing those reviews for a few weeks and forgot a whole bunch of stuff about the show.
Also I base allmost all of my score on my enjoyement of the show, the storyline and how much I liked the characters. If an anime makes me feel like crap at the end (School Days) there's no way in hell I'm giving it a good score no matter how insightful it may be or what kind of production value it may have. However, I make sure to note that in my review if I'm deducting a lot of points on that basis.
I have lots of fun doing the reviews! Typically I'll finish a series that I start, even if it's obviously lousy, so I can give it a reasonably educated review of how bad it really is. I think of Gantz as one series I did start (first eight episodes) but couldn't stand to continue because it looked like a "just violence" kind of series with little else going on. Otherwise, I've suffered all the way through some clunkers (often times with the help of my trusty fast-forward button on the remote) to be able to warn the world about some shows that are a waste of time. This "finish it" motto did pan out at least once where I initially wasn't real impressed with Speed Grapher only to find that things developed nicely, it became more entertaining with interesting characters, and that it had a stronger ending.
These reviews for the most part have been very very helpful, and have directed me to some goodies and away from some junk. I really appreciate hearing about why folks enjoy certain shows and why they thought shows were bad. Comparisons to other shows are helpful since it helps me figure out where the reviewer is coming from experience-wise and what kind of preferences they have.
Lol... same here. In fact, although a series might be bad, I like to review a bad series more than a good series... Seems like I'm pretty critical. Some of these titles inculde Nanoha Strikers, Erementar Gerad and Kyoshiro no Towa no Sora.
Hey, Mr./Ms. du5k. Thanks for the tips. Where you do the staff/admin thing, I figure you know your stuff, so I'll be staying clear of these shows.
I have to say that I've learned to thoroughly enjoy lambasting the lousy shows, especially with this "gotta finish it" thing I've got going on. I trudge through the junk, and in the end enjoy writing the scathing review to compensate for my having to suffer so much.
I'm still looking for more quality action packed, intense, adult-oriented shows like Elfen Lied, Monster, Speed grapher, Claymore, FMP 2nd Raid, Ninja Scroll movie (the quality in the Ninja Scroll series I found to be not-so-good), EVA, etc. with an interesting plot and set of characters. Any recommendations? I do enjoy the lighter shows too, like Ouran High, FMP Fumoffu, My Hime, Please Twins, etc., so long as they got the good quality too.
Hmm... maybe you can try Lain (click the banner above), it's a psychological series, the animation probably isn't that good (I seen it very long ago), but some of the effects are kinda cool... and it's a pretty adult-orientated series as well.
Many people like Nanoha StrikerS and Erementar Gerade though, so dun blame me if you find that you like it in the end...
Initial feeling? well when I finised watching FMA I was like "not worth anime to be watched since the ending wasn't satisfied one " or something like that but after...month I think it was a masterpiece for me ^__^
So I think initial feeling doesn't work well with me. Looks like I have a good memory xD
Now if I would go take off points for every singal negative things I see in the show then I wont have any show with top rate =/
I don't really pay attention to certain things in any show I see. Like FMA, I didn't liked all the OP/ED themes or you can say one of them (I don't really remember which one exactly) wasn't that great but do I have to take one point off? I didn't. Although I'm that kind of people who don't like re-watching any show again but I don't mind particular scenes.
Also there are some animes that somehow boring and I was like watching first episode then after year and something I continued watching it till the end but I wont give the worst point just because it made me bore. I usually focus on some points and they're
-Art animation (I don't really watch any with low quality unless I'm out of good animes xD )
-Storyline (I don't show any mercy if the storyline wasn't good)
-Plot/events (I criticize it precisly)
-Characters (especially their attitude)
Thats what in my mind right now and I think these the most important.
Thing I don't pay much attention to them are
-OP/ED themes (unless it was annoying that much as in Death Note)
-Some boring episodes or you can say certain events (minor one)
-Some elements such as suspense, language,..etc
-The length of the series (short or long as long as it has complete story like His and Her circumstance... I don't like open ending ~__~ )
Now I'm writing much as I wrote many reviews...I didn't even done 10
my bad Y-Y _________________
