There are programs out there where you can import a clip and it will show you the entire strip of frames. You can then remove the unwanted frames and export as GIF. I once used Ulead GIF Animator to create some quick GIFs. The one currently on my sig was done by actually taking individual screenshots and stringing them together. That was no fun at all.
Here are a couple that I made some time ago with Ulead GIF Animator:

anyway, what about Fireworks or Flash ? do they work too ?
(my anime files are .avi btw ) |

You could also do a screen capture (Alt + Print Screen) and paste it into whatever application you use to create the .gifs. Alt+Print Screen takes a capture of the window in focus while Alt+Shift+Print Screen captures the entire display. Some things can't be captured in a screen shot, though.

By .gif file, he means an animated image file.

Neither of those programs are meant to read video files. _________________
