About Koi and Ai.

If I remember correctly, you're south american right? Hopefully there is a similar difference between the words in your mother's tongue, as there isn't in english. However!...

Koi (æ?‹) and Ai (æ„›)

When translated into english, both do indeed mean "love", however their meaning is very different.

Koi is basically your "normal" love you may feel towards you boy-/girlfriend, someone you've taken interest in etc.

Ai is the sort of unconditional, "I would follow you to the ends of the earth and throw my life away for yours" sort of love.

That pretty much explains it. ^_^

I love reading manga in original print, because you get so much more out of it, because of so many aspects of the japanese language are untranslatable into english. ^_^

Being from the same part of the world, I would assume chinese has alot more accurate translations? O.o;

But still...Nothing can beat original print, and I will own the full series in original print at some point! ^_^

There are different terms for love in the English language, but not words. Koi would be a Platonic Love (or puppy love) and Ai would be Amorous love (as in being "in love" with another person).

In other languages, there are multiple words for love.

In Spanish, Amor and Cariño both mean love, but have different meanings.

Cariño can mean a love for some one or some thing which feels good. It's not a romantic kind of love and is usually one-sided. It can be the love for a person which makes one feel good or a hobby which makes one feel good.

Amor has a more mutual meaning like two people feeling complete in one another. Amor is a more sexual/sensual/intimate love than Cariño is (Hence the English term 'Amorous Love').

I'm not fluent in Spanish (yet), so I might be off on the meanings a bit; but that's the general idea I'm getting from your post.

Having one word for love can make things awkward with friends.

Not having different words for it in english does indeed complicate things, however I must admit that there are no complete equal words in my mother's tongue, swedish, either. ^.^;

While "amor" is probably very close to the meaning of "ai", "koi" is actually also a term for romantic love, however much less uhm..."Severe"? Can you say "severe" about love? '>.>

Only having one word for all kinds of love is problematic when trying to explain...My english being self taught through gaming doesn't help with my vocabulary either heheh... ^.^;

I shall try to come up with a better comparison, in the meantime, please ask if there's anything else you guys want to know. ^_^

Aah..."Degree" would indeed have sounded better...Though I have to admit I fail quite bad at using the correct word in the correct context, in my mother's tongue as well....Internet injury I'd say... ^.^;

Anyways, anime is an awesome way to get a basic grip of japanese culture. Watch anime of the real life genre, read the TL notes etc. Helped me alot in the beginning! ^_^

Heck, aside from the grammar, I even learned most of my japanese vocabulary through anime... O''o;

The first japanese word I learned (aside from "hai" and w/e words are common knowledge), was "ute - fire!", from watching Gundam Seed.

...

Am I the first person ever, not to learn "baka" first? ^.^;

the easiest way to pick up japanese culture is to watch slice of life anime. these are the shows that are just about people doing daily things. they usually overlap with high school romance and comedies.

aside: Roppon, you've got pretty (damned) good english for self-taught. and it seems like every swede i meet is a gamer of one sort or another ^^.

Your use of English is better than many native speakers I know.

I guess I know more than I'm letting on, but I'm more familiar with the modern culture than the pre-westernization stuff. I had to do a research report in college about how the evolution of technology is driven by the sex industry (Specifically, certain trends in the growth of the internet and premium mobile phone content). I used cultural examples from all over Europe and Japan to argue my thesis.

Anyway, that's neither here nor there.

I have learned a lot about the culture from Anime, but I still feel like I haven't learned enough. Also, there's the fear I may misunderstand something about the culture (Take a particular action out of context, for example). There's got to be a decent community college course I can take somewhere. . .
