Posted: Fri Mar 07, 2008 10:04 pm Post subject: Ghost in the Shell: Viewing order
I've only watched the original Ghost in the Shell movie, but haven't seen the rest of the series. I'm wondering if I should watch the second movie or start the TV series. Any suggestions?
Original Movie
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence (second movie; though you can skip this in favore of the next ones. Timeline wise it happens after everything else in the series so you won't miss new character introductions or storylines and I think the other parts of the series are better)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (first TV season)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - 2nd Gig (second TV season)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society (3rd movie)
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence (second movie; though you can skip this in favore of the next ones. Timeline wise it happens after everything else in the series so you won't miss new character introductions or storylines and I think the other parts of the series are better)
***BUZZZZ*** Wrong.
The first and second Ghost in the Shell movies Have absolutely NO connection with the Stand Alone Complex TV series and movie. They are based on the same source material, yes, but they have nothing to do with each other in terms of story or design. They're two different animals.
That aside, the order suggested by Faraz is probably the best, since it is the order each production was made in. The other alternative would be to watch the two original movies last.
Of course, you could also watch them in-between the SAC productions, but always bear in mind that they are still different products. _________________

I agree, I'd watch it in the order Faraz mentioned, minus Innocence.
I never really enjoyed watching it. I mentioned this in a review I made, but
it never really felt right not having the Major playing a big part in the movie until near the end and for me, this detracted hugely from my viewing experience.
Everything else GiTS is excellent though and this is especially true about the 2 SACs. _________________ Click Here For My Anime List

NOWAI!
Innocence is great! Hell, it's better than the previous one! The level is different between Innocence and SAC because SAC aired on TV, where mass appeal and ratings come hand-in-hand with making the material easier to grasp by the general audience. Movie audiences can be more selective in that aspect.
Depending on what you look for, the TV series might actually be the let-down (not my case, but that of a friend of mine).
And Batou makes for a great main character.

I see where you're coming from, but The Major is quite simply one of the coolest ass-kickers around in all of anime and inspite of Batou's involvement in Innocence I still feel that it just lacked that little something.
Visually I found that it was simply mind-blowing and I really enjoyed just rewinding certain parts and just re-watching the scenery go by. In that regard it's one of the best movies (visuall)y I've ever seen.
I just felt that if the movie had been about 20 minutes longer or so, it would have been a lot more enjoyable for me. There was just so much being said and conveyed, that I felt it didn't do itself justice with just 90 minutes. It just felt convoluted at times and for a first timer, it is just down-right confusing.
GiTS as a franchise is one of the more intelligent and mature shows out there and I have always enjoyed watching them.
Innocence is a 'good enough' movie, but compared to the other superb incarnations of GiTS, I just felt it just fell short.
I've only just joined the forum and the last thing I want is to have a heated argument about a show that has a huge following. I mean that's just my 2 cents worth. _________________ Click Here For My Anime List

The problem I had with innocence was that the dubbed version wasn't available in North America and I absolutely love GiTS's dub. Besides, with such complex storylines, reading subtitles and watching the action doesn't really work for a series like GiTS.
Finally, lack of the Major through most of the movie = fail.

It's quite a stretch between that and "you can miss it". I really don't think her absence is all that detracting, especially since the "absence" itself is questionable. In my opinion, that's actually something that makes the movie all that much more interesting. And for someone who wants to keep watching GiTS stuff and started with the original film, Innocence is the most logical continuation.

Agreed. 100%

That's a gripe I have more with the first movie than with the second...
especially since in that one, the major is kind of emo. Yes, innocence is convoluted and some parts of it are hard to grasp, but I think it makes a lot of sense at the end.

lol... Hey, I accepted reviews of yours! you owe me a spar!
Kidding. I could start rambling, but I guess I might as well save my arguments and effort for a review. I've been meaning to write one for a while.

I find the series refreshing after the movies, because they have more action and less philosophy
Now that's a conclusion that you can't argue with

yeah, the dub is great, but I'm a sub man... so that didn't matter much to me. I've been watching subbed movies and entertainment pretty much since I learned how to read, so it comes as second nature now. Maybe my case is special, but I don't see "sub only" as being a problem.

Back to point 1. The major is, no doubt about it, an important element of GiTS, but I think that Innocence still had plenty of her to go 'round. More subtly, that's all. _________________

You accepted my review? LOL! Yeah, for another time perhaps
Irrespective of whatever has been said, it's clear to say that GiTS has a firm place in the hearts of a lot of fans out there, myself included. I just hope they announce another incarnation of the show in the near future.
Now all, I just need the cash to go out and buy the DVD box-sets! _________________ Click Here For My Anime List

Done! In fact, I'm quite happy with mine. Too bad that the fist SAC came out before artboxes were"the rage"... the packaging leaves a lot to be desired. At least the DVDs come with some neat extras. _________________

Agreed.
Unfortunately only the first movie has been released here in Hungary. It's not likely that the rest will be released, not in the near future that's for sure. _________________ Dv
