Dear A-S,
Would it be possible to make an expanded top rated anime list, or better yet a "display by score" option of listing for all the anime? I think if you did the latter and set a minimum number of reviews for inclusion at five, it would be a great resource for people to find out about good but lesser known anime, and find other good anime outside of the top 50. Also, if the filter design for the listing isn't to difficult, you could make the same expanded "display by score" for each genre. I just think it would make the whole search process for new things to watch much easier and faster.
Please let me know what you think about the idea.
.... You want them to be better at genre choosing perhaps? Last I checked some series had like 5+ genres.
.... when the series has a base/minimal amount of that genre... which ended up having something like Death Note as the top rated ACTION anime. or something....
Anywho Don't really like Top lists anyways personally, I mean they ranked Fate/stay Night in the top 5 of one year, and that show wasn't even watchable. They are just 'top' lists..... Some people's opinion.
sure maybe its a counting of the people who vote, and they vote on what they've seen, but come on, Fate/Stay Night? Shirou has to be the stupidest most annoying main in any series ever.
Serious I watched the first 1-2 episodes and they hammered in the basic plot and then Saber appears and gives the basic plot like for the 15th time so far, and Shirou bright lad that he is has the balls to go Huh? like I'll watch the next episode with a guy that mind numbingly stupid and has an annoying voice....
Long rant cutting short, point is I don't use 'popular vote' mostly I use a mixture of what folks who don't seem to be idiots are talking about, art, and recommendations.
art may seem shallow, but with art, even if the series starts to suck you've at least got SOMETHING.

We had a discussion about this in the staff area fairly recently. Part of the staff wanted the requirements changed to make it so only series that have, stood the test of time, so to speak, would be listed. Myself and several of the other staff members, understanding their point of view, nevertheless advocated a more middle ground approach. Thats what you see today.
Sorry for the specifics earlier. Not sure if we were allowed to post the standards, so thought I'd just go and remove them to be sure.

The contradictions are actually kind of the idea. I wrote a post a couple of months ago saying that the minimum number of votes to be in the top 50 should be raised, and I hope that my post contributed to the raise that followed. I still say that "flash in the pan" and "cult phenomenon" anime should be reasonably excluded from the overall top 50.
This is where my second idea that I really tried to emphasize comes into play. I don't want to change the top 50; not the overall, not the action, not the drama, etc... What I would really like is a filter that, just like listing anime alphabetically, lists them, instead, by review score. I proposed a low minimum number of reviews (5) to eliminate the dozens of anime that have 1 or 2 perfect scores and nothing more from the list.
The bottom line is that I in no way want to replace or change the current rankings. I agree that many "unwatchable" anime have a handful of fans that write raving reviews, and that a higher minimum number or reviews prevents their unjust inclusion in the top 50. What I am proposing are separate, expanded lists outside the central lists governed by sorting filters.
This is why I asked if appropriate filters could feasibly be constructed for the task. It's kind of like a used car finder. "Select make" = "select genre". "Sort by price" = "sort by score". Once again, the minimum number of reviews is just to eliminate outliers.
This would be of great service to people like me who have posted in the "recs" forum but haven't been informed of anything new or anything at all. The truth is that I've gone through the entire list of anime reviews several times looking for good shows I haven't seen yet, and it's a pain the ass to check out every show with a decent rating to see if it's genre/plot/reviews constitute something I want to watch.
If this endeavor would require actual human resources to go through each anime and check ratings, genre, number of reviews, etc... I wouldn't ask for it. However, if a filtering program could be designed to do all of it, or at least a close proximity, I think it would make things a lot easier for others like myself who have to go through all the anime one-by-one looking for something that matches those criteria.
