| I would like to propose raising the number of reviews required for entry into the top fifty from what I believe is 10 to 20. My reasoning is simple, look at the top ten animes and see how many have fewer than twenty reviews or have debuted in the last year or so. This may be perceived as being biased, but look at the drop Death Note took from its previous #1 position to its current seat at #34. To put it simply, many animes catch some flash in the pan success and then decline, and many have a small but tremendously loyal fan base that is not representative of the broader spectrum of viewers. I myself have submitted intensely complementary reviews for two animes which have not found mass approval, but acknowledge that while I regard these works very highly and consider them both members of my top five shows of all time, they have not found widespread approval and thus do not yet deserve a place on the top fifty. It isn't about what one, two, or even a dozen people think about an anime, it's about what the community thinks as a whole. It is in that spirit that I suggest this change, and I hope that others agree that a work must meet more than transitory of cult appeal before being called one of the top fifty animes of all time. |

That is a completely valid point.
One has to note that for new shows that haven't finished yet, we message everyone who wrote a review for the show before it ended with a copy of their said review and ask them to review it and delete all the reviews since they were partial reviews before the whole show has finished.
At the end of the season you'll see all those newer shows disappear from the top 50 list.
But then again the top 50 list should be really for top 50's and not so called 'fads'.
I'll bring this up with the other staff, we may need to tweak our formulas for the top 50 list.
Perhaps a list that shows popular "new" anime shows currently airing?
we'll see =) _________________

I like the idea as well (actually, we were debating something along those lines already, although for a different top 50).
Raising the required reviews is probably a good idea, although maybe we should experiment with 15 or some other numbers before jumping the gun straight to 20... depending on the numbers that gives us, of course. If putting the requirement as high as 20 gives us a list with animes with a 7/10 average or so in the list, then I don't thin that 20 would be too good a number. Those scores really aren't "top" anything.
As for the whole "new anime goes high fast", I agree that something has to be done about that... I have an idea that maybe we could discuss with the other staff members. _________________

I don't agree with this, for the simple reason that, we don't get enough reviews. Sad as it is to admit this. Great shows that are not flashes in the pan, never receive even the required 10 reviews. Either because they are sequels, (Ghost in the Shell 2nd Gig) Or because other, newer series get released and or licensed, and these are forgotten. I really think setting the bar any higher then 10 would be the wrong way to go.
I would agree that shows shouldn't go on the list at least until their run is over. |

I agree that having bumped the requirement to 20 might have been too extreme, but I still think that raising it from 10 is a good Idea. I think we should see how we do with 15 before drawing final conclusions. _________________

Apologies for bumping this thread up, but I just would like clarification on this issue.
I just noticed that Lovely Complex has just joined the top 50 list at #1.
Has the new threshold of 15 reviews minimum been implemented yet? _________________ Click Here For My Anime List

Ah I see.
Just one more thing... will this new threshold be used for the 50 lowest ranked anime as well? I think it'll be hard for most to even bother with a review for some of the poorer shows out there.
Anyway, thanks for confirming it Frundock. I just needed to hear it from the horse's mouth so to speak.

No. The threshold for the lowest ranked is only 4, precisely because most people don't bother with them. I wish to see that threshold bumped up as well, but that depends on people's reviews... Once we see a proliferation of shows with only 4 reviews on that list (hasn't quite happened yet), the requirement will go up.

First Kaiser is called a Sperm Whale, and now Frund gets called a Horse. What's next? Is Xeno a Porcupine? Our poor admins always getting badgered... Context? Metaphors? what are those? _________________

LOL
Yeah, I gotta go easy on the metaphors. I'll just say it the way I mean it in future.
Alternatively... I'd like to think being labelled as a particular animal would be a term of endearment for all the hard work the admins have to do _________________ Click Here For My Anime List
