What do you think the effective way to memorize or study?
My teacher once told me that waking up early in the morning is a good way to memorize well and to study for examination. Another one told me to study while I'm sleepy -___-;
She said that the memory will be on "Stand by for saving" and *click* saved!
I tried it and I prefer not commenting on this one.
Not to speak about the advice one of my best teachers gave me. It was a funny way ^^; sorry I'm not good into describing in English. _________________ "Blogger"

you could use mnemonic
thats the asociation of ideas.
for example for numbers
1 = T (1 looks like a T)
2 = N (if you turn 2 it looks like N)
3 = M (same here, turn 3 and it looks like M)
4 = C (this is more phonetic, as this is an association in spanish, you could do an association in arabic if its suits you)
5 = L, LL (in your palm you have 5 fingers. if you look to your thumb and index youll see they form an L)
6 = S, Z (this is also a phonetic association)
7 = F, J (7 looks like and F or a J)
8 = H, CH (phonetic)
9 = P, V, B (9 looks like a P and the rest are phonetic related to the sound of P)
0 = R, RR (zeRo)
aight, so what do you do with that? if you have to remember a date. lets say 1592. then you have TLPN
sounds somewhere familiar? TLPN.......no? then hows TeLePoNe? its missing an "h", right? TeLePoNe is easier to remember coz it sounds weird. you have to build funny/weird words with the numbers
the h was omitted because "H" would be 8 and there isnt 8 in 1592
you have to associate a number with a consonant, not a vowel
if you have to remember smthn else you do the same. relate whatever subject with smthn silly or put characters in silly situations
for example:
did king leonidas I of sparta died at the battle of termopilas?
yes! he screamed to king jerjes I "THIS IS SPARTAAAAAA!!!" and king jerjes replied "IT IS NOT THAT FUNYYYYYYYY!!!". leonidas got in shock and jerjes took advantage of the moment to shot an arrow to leonidas
see? its funny and easy to remember
well, this is the technic i know

remember your last thread? where you asked that if you repeat smthn it might happen? remember my answer
in the morning you are still kinda sleepy and your brain is still in alpha state, which is that "stand by" state. in this state when you input an order to the brain it will be "saved" in the subcouncious.
thats the explanation to what your teacher said. see? facts sommy, facts.
now, ive never tried that coz i dont like to wake up early....only if i have to go to work or to school xD _________________

Or you could make up a song... Don't know if it works but, try it and see.
Another way is to listen to something while you sleep. Not sure how this one works but apparently it does. _________________ [img:460:140:921061a6b7]http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/5557/pictureperfect.jpg[/img:921061a6b7]

emr no thats a myth. the scientists proved that one wrong a long time ago. I mean, if its true, people wont need to mug, they just ... ...sleep...
The one Cherry suggested works. Another thing is the environment. It depends on if your mind is more alert in the morning or night. I was told to start by memorizing things bit by bit and not by chunks. Also, its best to concentrate on one subject firts and for that whole period of time, just that one subject. And of coz, onece youre done memorizing what needs to be memorized, to maintain/retain in the memory, is just the cliché saying "practice makes perfect"
Work in a quiet place where there are absolutely no sound at all cause your exam is probably gonna be in absolute silent. You can concentrate better and remember stuff better in silence than with music because you're not allow any electronics during exam I believe.
Study at night because your mind will process and organize the information while you sleep. Of course, study at night but not late in the night!!!
Try not to listen to the radio when you sleep. This is just a personal experience so it might not work for you but sometimes my mind ends up absorbing the news and such on the radio and end up discarding what I was studying.
And do your homework, practice makes perfect! I'm a hypocrite at this! _________________

Myth: Learning while sleeping. An untold number of learning programs promises you to save years of life by learning during sleep. Fact: It is possible to store selected memories generated during sleep by: external stimuli, dreams, hypnagogic and hypnopompic hallucinations (i.e. hallucinations experienced while falling asleep and while waking up). However, it is nearly impossible to harness this process into productive learning. The volume of knowledge that can be gained during sleep is negligible.
O.K granted you can't learn by sleep but technically you can still memorize selected things. If the above is true and External Stimuli do effect your dreams then shouldn't you be able to harness what you want to memorize throughout the dream. For instance if you were to record your notes on your work or whatever. Than listen to it during sleep wouldn't you memorize it and therefore learn it? _________________ [img:460:140:921061a6b7]http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/5557/pictureperfect.jpg[/img:921061a6b7]

Yes, learning in the morning is a good idea since you started with fresh brain for the day, so nothing is burdening your brain.
That is why learning is best done in the morning.
For best in memorizing, I usually does this called Funny Association, pretty similar to what Cherry mentions, but since I am more pictorial-oriented people, I imagine pictures to the sound of the numbers or how they look like. As for the rest, it is purely on the word and imagine the word in a funny context.
Let me give you an example: Battle of Waterloo, 18 June 1815
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the association:
0 --> Hero (Rhymes)
1 --> Bun (Bun and one rhymes)
2 --> Tooth (Rhymes)
3 --> Tree
4 --> Car (It has 4 wheels =P)
5 --> Hand (5 fingers)
6 --> Sex (A bit crude, but you can't imagine how this helped >_>)
7 --> Heaven (A bit rhymes)
8 --> Egg (A bit rhymes)
9 --> Mine (Rhymes, but useful for explosive association)
So Battle of Waterloo, 18th June 1815
Battle of Waterloo --> Imagine yourself battling yourself in the loo filled with water as you release the pressure off your colon >_>
18 June 1815 --> 18 / 6 / 1815
18 --> Bun & Egg
6 --> Sex
1815 --> Bun, Egg, Bun, Hand
For me, I imagine as this:
A BUN and an EGG have SEX, producing BUN EGG. Wanted to have more pleasure, BUN decided to get a HAND job (Sexual thing, but what the hell! It is for learning)
So if you combine those, you can imagine yourself like this:
While you are shitting yourself in the loo (Battle of Waterloo), you imagine a bun and egg (18th) having sex(6 --> June), producing bun and egg offspring. Thinking that that feels good, bun decided to ask for a hand job (18 for bun and egg offspring, 15 for egg's hand job, so 1815).
Answer: Battle of Waterloo, 18th June 1815.
This may take a while to adapt to. When I tried this the first time, it is also not easy, but after with some practice, it will stick with you =)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another thing to note is that once you have done this, make sure you read about the subject in 24 hours. After which, your memory will start forgetting the details. After doing that for around 2-3 days, do the same subject again after around 2-3 days again. After multiple readings, I bet it will stick in your brain. At least, till the exam period. _________________ Innocent Tranquility

hmmm since I'm during exam then I think I can help you somehow.
See one of my Dr told me a way sooo difficult but the info will stick to your mind forever~
Listen carefully! now read 7 pages carfully then study the first page with all its details. After that read again the 7 pages then go to the next page (the second page) and study it. Once you finish, revise the first page and read the third page then go to the third page and study it well. after that revise the second and read the fourth. Do like that to the rest of pages till you reach the seventh page then read again all those pages. With this his way you'll never forget what you've studied no matter what unless you hit your head with something hard =P
This Dr is a supervisor of all those doctors in my area now ^__^
I do this association thing when my mind started to colse and nothing can get in my mind or when it comes to history. Studying about 300 pages of science stuff reachs my limit @__@
and yeah practicing things you learn is a very useful way or even repetition for things that can't be practiced.
Average mind can study for 40 min (after that anything you study will vanish) so take break for 10min after each 40min of studying.
Also remember that druing exam days you need to eat more sweets for your mind's sake (Don't worry you wont get fat as long as you study hard =P )
Try also to write what you've studied to make those info stick to your mind and if there's enough time then try to teach what you've studied to your lil siblings.
I usually use my imagination when studying and I try to guess what kind of questions my teacher can bring.
Hope this might help you, ult. Now wish me luck to pass ^.^ _________________

try reading the text at least three times depending on how fast can you remember things. that's what my prof says but i don't know if it works...
for me, i just read the text once in the morning and another time in the afternoon/evening and keep repeating the important details in my mind when i'm doing nothing that requires me to think(e.g. walking). it works for me.

trying to learn 300 drug names plus their generic equivalent plus their medical use is pretty much a hard thing to do...
took me the whole course to get most of them etched in my memory...
there is no clear cut way of memorizing them...
I in fact used several ways of memorizing my drug names...
by association, by analogy, by connection and simply repetition...
one of the things that really stuck in my head is...
Telmisartan (generic name) = Micardis (brand name)
"Tell me Sartan, how my card is?"
so depending on what fits, you can use a myriad of ways to try and memorize things... the bottom line is, it has to stick to your head... _________________
