Travelling in Japan

Hey Guys and Girls im travelling to japan with my girlfriend in november and i was wondering if anyone had any tips on travelling, if anyone knows the cheapest and best way to travel to and from tokyo to kyoto or osaka to tokyo

basically, the best thing you're gonna want for the trip from Osaka to tokyo and kyoto is a JR pass:
http://www.japanrailpass.net/

with this you can travel all over japan on ANY JRline and even the shinkansen trains for free, within the set amount of time that you paid for.
for example, buy a two week pass for $### and you can go anywhere in japan, as much as you like within that two week period.

wow its pretty expensive i was wondering if the was any other alternative
all up there are 4 of us for the most part we'll be in tokyo, but we'll travel to kyoto and osaka and be there for about 10 days then back to tokyo. but if the JR Pass is the cheapest then i guess there's no other choice.

the JR pass does sound and seem expensive at first glance, but believe me, travelling from JUST tokyo to osaka will already cost you about 2/3 of the price of a JR pass, and thats just ONE WAY.

also, in tokyo theres the Sakura hostels, they are pretty good and you can get rooms of up to 4 people.
i cant remember how much the rooms where, but they were under $5o a night per person* if i remember right.
*not sure if it is per person.

if you are staying in Asakusa, i found a great hotel.
Chisun Inn Asakusa was really comfortable, but i didnt make the booking, so checking on the site, it looks really expensive.
my girlfriend and I only paid 6000 all up for a double, but i cant find that on the site.
