heya, just wonder if those who have been to Japan have any good suggestions on some nice places to go?

Looking for maybe some small towns and things to stay in for a few days or so while going around the whole country..you know places which have very little tourists etc..

any help appreciated.

my obvious suggestion is Okayama City (::points left, check the profile user location, heehee::). It's a small coastal city between Osaka and Hiroshima. You can spend a day or two in Okayama (there are a few good attraction, including one of Japan's top 3 gardens), then you can head either North into "xeno country" in the mountains or go South to Shikoku Island and see all the temples and shrines.

I can guarentee that there are no tourists here, but whatever you would plan on doing would require a car. The trains will bring you into the city center (in my case, Takahashi City), but that will just dump you right in the middle of all the shopping plazes and mom-n-pop stores. Any place cool that you would want to see is beyond walking-distance.

There are shrines and castles out here, plus the countryside is breathtakingly beautiful, though public transport will only get you so far.

If you want to learn more about living in the REAL Japan, look through this article I wrote on my city a few days ago:

any questions, just ask here. I'll check back to see any updates.

Beyond walking distance would mean like how far? I am a walking traveler by nature so I don’t mind walking for hours to get to places I need to go. :p

I don't have a sack full of cash so my budget for hiring cars will be very limited (i.e. non-existent). Sad

Looking at those photos in your blog the area looks fantastic, is there any hostels / cheap accommodation around there?

in Takahashi, you could probably visit a few small temples and the old samurai village, though anything further out than that would be about 3 or 4 kilometers of nothingness. To get to Kawakami-cho where the scenery gets really beautiful, it's about 15kms of walking, although there are buses around. Not sure where they take you to exactly, but I see them driving around all over the place. If you have enough maps and can read Kanji alright, you can probably get around via bus.

understandable, definitely. No sense in spending all your money on transport then not have any cash left to spend when you arrive. Buses would work around here, I suppose. Don't use taxis... expensive as all hell. Renting a bike might be another good idea.

hostels... not sure. Okayama City probably has some. I know there's a business hotel 3 blocks from Okayama Station which is about $30/night.

haha, I'm still trying to figure out what you mean by that. People all look "Japanese" to me here... there are definitely the country-bumpkins, but then I see the packs of high school students dressed like punk-rockers wearing pounds of make-up like you'd see in any city.
