as mentioned in my blog from the other day, my laptop no longer starts up anymore. When I turn it on, I get a few status checks, but then before it gets to the log-on screen, it tells me:
Configuring Updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 87%... shutting down
then it reboots... and does the same thing over and over again. Even in Safe Mode, I get the same problem.
This was 3 days ago. Now I have a recovery disk that I downloaded off the internet installed into my drive. Nothing seems to have happened. My options at this point are:
- Safe Mode
- Safe Mode with Networking
- Safe Mode with Command Prompt
- Enable Boot Logging
- Enable low-resolution video
- Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)
- Directory Services Restore Mode
- Debugging Mode
- Disable automatic restart on system failure
- Disable Driver Signature Enforcement
what should be my next step in order to get to the Repair Option? I am trying to keep my files intact. Please help! _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

Hey again. Let's hope this gets you up and running before Christmas!
Try this...
1) Put your XP CD in and power down.
2) Re-boot and at the first prompt screen press R to enter the Recovery Console. (This will bring up a command prompt window.)
3) At the prompt type in fixboot and hit Enter.
4) Remove the XP CD and re-boot.
5) If this does not fix it repeat the above procedure except this time at the prompt type in fixmbr and hit Enter...again follow the above instructions.
FIGHT-O!
EDIT: Keep fighting! But, um.. make that your Vista CD... I um, just sorta noticed you wrote Vista and not XP so I thought I'd edit this to say that and, um... well, seriously, go back to XP and wait for Windows 7. It's a whole lot better! Heck even the intrepid IT team here (All 348 of them) gave up on Vista and are currently working on the Windows 7 roll-out. GO LINUX! _________________ [img:500:130:4c09194a46]http://www.absolutecollies.com/Manga/ClannadSignature001.jpg[/img:4c09194a46]

I cant even get to step 2... I hold down the R key at boot-up, but nothing changes; it just still goes to the same screen where it tells me that it is configuring updates. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

I was viciously teased for about 3 minutes... for that long, my laptop let me log-in and it actually loaded my desktop. I kinda froze in that moment thinking about what I should do next, hoping that if I didnt press anything nothing would change. After that time, it went back to automatically shutting itself down and now I am back in my endless loop.
I have made a little progress though... a friend told me how to do a BIOS boot, so I have made it into that menu. I am still tooling around with the options in here, but so far, nothing has improved my situation... not even telling it to boot from the optical drive where I have the recovery disk waiting to take action.
help please _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

The weather outside is frightful! Ice everywhere and all the main roads are closed in 4 or more locations each! But as soon as I can get into work I'll see if I can't pick the brains of the team that tried to impliment Vista for the company. You know, the team that eventually threw up their hands and gave up. Yeah, them. Hopefully I'll have an answer by 12pm your time.

nice, thanks... I appreciate that
I spent about an hour logged on with live-chat support from Sony... at least THEY will help me, unlike those lazyasses at microsoft... you know, the ones who are RESPONSIBLE for this problem. Seems like I can find the solution with them, but without my system-specific program disk, I am stuck. Yeah... the disk I swear I never got. I did pack in a hurry to come to Japan, but why wouldnt I keep the disk with my computer? _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

OKAY, so it's about 8:30pm your time. The help desk here was NO help at all. "Sorry sir, we do not support Vista anymore." Nice! But I did talk to a few people who had it and found one that had your problem. Here's the instructions they were given. (Thank goodness for people who don't clean out their folders.) But I owe her something now and I'm afraid to ask what she wants. *-*^
1) Find the Windows Vista disk that came with your new computer. If you cannot find it call 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge for support calls that are associated with security updates.
2) Put the disc in the disc drive while the computer is turned on.
3) Hold the on/off button down until the computer shuts down.
4) Push the on/off button again and begin pushing the ESC key immediately to prevent the computer from loading windows from the hard drive.
5) You need to change the order of the boot setup. Use the arrow keys to get down to boot setup. Push enter on boot setup. Find boot from disc and use the arrow kets to get to it.
6) Push F6 to move the boot from disc option to the top. Make boot from the hard drive as number two.
7) Push the ESC key. The computer will ask you if you want to save changes and exit. Use the arrow key to highlight yes, and push the enter key.
You computer will now boot from the windows disc. It will create a file called old windows and window. The old windows will have all of your data safe in it, so don't worry. Once you complete setup of windows, you can move your data from old windows to windows.

groan- I hope you don't have to do anything that requires wearing rubber-gloves for this info... particulary since I already knew all that stuff... which on my model is completely different anyway (F2 is my BIOS button). Without my start-up disk, I am totally 1,000% stuck. I have to wait for Sony to make me a disk to mail to my US address, so it can be forwarded to me. Who knows how long that will take, especially with the holidays now. _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

You tried using the Escape button? OKay.
I was afraid that you had tried all that already. But yes, it is related to the security service pack updates. Seems it was actually a common problem. I think I might just go and teach myself more about Linux at this rate. If I see any other thing that might be of help, I'll post it but it seems that no matter what I do I'll always be 15 hours behind you! _________________ [img:500:130:4c09194a46]http://www.absolutecollies.com/Manga/ClannadSignature001.jpg[/img:4c09194a46]
Are you able to access your files?
what is this "recovery cd" you downloaded?
most recovery cds do not require you to install anything, should be just bootable. Remember creating a bootable cd is different from just burning files to cd. it's easier to just burn a bootable iso image.
most forums seem to say there is a "pending.xml" at c:/windows/winsxs which can be deleted to stop the rebooting.

I am not sure how I could check... the only things I have the ability to play around with are the BIOS menu and the Advanced Start-up Menu with the options listed in the original post

I got it off the internet from neosmart.com

I am thinking this is where my error lies... it is a 120MB ISO file... whatever that means.

how would I go about to delete that thingymadoober?
@Jack... are you in the Eastern or Central time-zone? Eastern is 14 hours behind me, Central is 15. I am not sure if Pennsylvania is divided up... I dont even know where the border for the zones is, haha _________________ GTX: Great Teacher Xeno... my daily blog about teaching in an elementary and middle school in Japan (see right-menu)

Ah! Looks like we have someone who's farther along the knowledge lane than me. Looks like Kudol should be doing the talking, so I'll pull over into the slow lane and check out some techie sites I've recently stumbled across. I'll keep checking here to see how things are going and hopefully be able to add some useful information...hopefully. _________________ [img:500:130:4c09194a46]http://www.absolutecollies.com/Manga/ClannadSignature001.jpg[/img:4c09194a46]
I just used the standard Windows burn tool. I was using my other friend's computer, because unlike the one I am borrowing, hers was made in this decade.

gomen... I was on all day yesterday, and I will be here for the next two hours, but after that, I will be out all evening and all day tomorrow. Leave instructions on what file I should download and what software I should use to do so and I will touch base with you again later in the weekend.
thanks for all your help

I think that is the problem, xeno. You can't just copy the file into the disc like that as it is made out of image files.
If you are not sure what image file is, it is something like "soft copy" disc. So in order to convert this soft copy to hard copy, you need a software that can convert that soft copy info into hard copy, which is your disc.
