I saw this on 4chan and thought it was hilarious. Below is the actual boxart of the original US release for Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
Not to mention the cover art looks like it ripped off all the major sci-fi movies out there... WHO THE HECK ARE THOSE CHARACTERS? Are they even in the movie? lol
Just thought it was absolutely freaking hilarious and you guys might like seeing the horror of bad R1 companies. R1 Publisher is New World Video btw, I think Studio Ghibi gave the license to Disney now. |

For a moment there I was wondering if it had a prequel or something! Lol! Sure wasn't the movie I saw. Oh what horror. |

In 1985 an English dub of Nausicaa was released in North America by New World Video. Believing that Nausicaa could not be properly marketed in the United States as it was, New World cut a large amount of the film and re-wrote the story, creating a much more juvenile film. This English version was then released under the name "Warriors of the Wind" and was distributed on VHS by Orion Home Video for several year (until 1995 when the license expired).
Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli were horified by the changes made to the movie. The experience caused Miyazaki to take a hard line on future licenses, requiring that a "no edit" clause be included in all contracts. When Disney was preparing Mononoke for release in North America Miyazaki sent them an authentic Samurai Sword with a short and simple message "No Cuts."
Nausicaa was included in the Tokuma / Disney deal and Disney is currently working on an English dub for release sometime in 2004. |

New World Pictures felt it could only be marketed as a kid's action movie, so they cut out about a quarter of the movie (the parts they felt were "slow moving") and garbled the storyline in the process. Nausicaä was changed to "Princess Zandra". The voice actors and actresses (see next paragraph for a note about June Foray) said later that they were never told what the story was about and so the acting was substandard. Miyazaki was horrified when he found out what they had done to his film, and Ghibli asks everyone to forget that this version ever existed. Fortunately, New World Video's rights to Nausicaä expired in 1995.
Regarding June Foray, there was a rumor that she was the voice of "Princess Zandra". Emru Townsend, a subscriber of the Miyazaki Mailing List, finally sent a video tape of "Warriors" to Ms. Foray so that she could confirm whether or not that was her voice. She denied that it was her voice in that role. |
Of course, there is a happy ending to all of this...

Q: I heard there is an official sub of "Nausicaä". Is it true?
Yes. With the expiration of the rights for "Warriors of the Wind", Ghibli produced a new English subtitled version of "Nausicaä". It premiered in London on July 30, 1995 at a special screening event at the "Building Bridges" program. Disney has acquired the global distribution rights for "Nausicaä", and any eventual US (or the rest of the world) release will probably include the sub. |

WTF! I knew about this vandalized version of Nausicaa but I had never seen the cover art. What on Earth were they thinking?... They must have been on some serious crack. Well, to give it some credit *at least* it has Nausicaa in the background of the cover art |
