You sure you've thought that one through? Surely a chinese year is roughly the same length as elsewhere? I mean, they gotta have seasons and stuff over there. :p _________________ David |

The Chinese calender month is a lunar rotation (i.e. roughly every 30 days).
This is the old traditional calender (still used especially for Taoist festival dates). AFAIK all the Asian nations have discarded it in favour of the Gregorian calender. However the old calenders are retained for the festivals & associated holidays. Why do you think the Chinese New Year keeps jumping around in the months of January & February.
But there is an another reason why a Chinese 17 year old by Gregorian standards is considered 18 by his elders. Every kid is already considered as 1 year old when he/she is born. Reason often quoted is "Its the custom". My reasoning is that they considered the conception & gestation period as part of the life span as well, rounding it up. So a nice rounded figure on being born would be a year.
Edit: Stupid lunar rotation thingee

Actually Yebyosh, it was because their counting system started at 1 at the time... 0 as a base for counting was a concept quite foreign to them. The concept of "0" actually originates from Mayan mathematics; later resurgances of the concept were often frowned upon. _________________ You can't hold no groove if you ain't got no pocket. |

I would say there's lots of disputes to that.
The earliest 'official' documented case of a Chinese using zero is
| Quote: |
| In 1247 the Chinese mathematician Ch'in Chiu-Shao wrote Mathematical treatise in nine sections which uses the symbol O for zero. |
However there are theories stating that the Nine Chapters which could be written in 200 AD might have given the concept of zero but not in writing.
Not to forget that the I Ching, the earliest Chinese method for counting which was assigned to divination purposes uses a number base of 0 to 4. Scholars have confidentedly pointed out the I Ching's roots as close to 8th BC.
I would not say my postulation is correct (since it is my guess) but I'm not too confident of the explanation of giving the child an age of 1 just because they do not have 0. |

I'm not necessarily suggesting that they didn't have 0. Just that 0 was still very new and used only by the upper-echelons... While mathematicians are saying "Eureka! True counting starts at the absence of everything!", it was still common convention to start counting at 1. After all, it takes close to half a century for any broad topic like that to take on widespread acceptance within a society...
Just like you, though, this is only my theory... as well as everyone else who makes statements on the subject, since we can't really ask the people why they thought of things the way they did... _________________ You can't hold no groove if you ain't got no pocket. |

Hmm, a coincidence that this is the same period of time as a modern European month? We go by lunar months as well - as do the arabs - and I can't see any other practical period for a year than twelve months. I'm not saying that every calendar must have precisely 365 days but they must be something of that order otherwise there'd be no point. Seasons wouldn't be regular and the harvest would be at a different time every year. You might as well just do away with years altogether since they're not useful if you can't schedule by them. _________________ David |
