PostPosted: Sun Apr 12, 2009 9:22 pm    Post subject: Stuff I wrote Reply with quote

As the title says, this is just some stuff I've written. Mostly songs (some of which my old band played and I have recordings of for anyone interested), a few poems, maybe a random paragraph or two; you know, just whatevs. I figured I'd throw 'em out there for anyone who might want something to read. If you like any of them, I'd love to hear. If you have constructive criticism, that'd be fine too. If you wanna talk smack about them, please just save it; I didn't ask you to read them if you didn't want to. If I write something else I want to add, I'll just tag it on.

Here's the stuff I have recordings for (really, really rough recordings):

Life in Tow

The air is sitting and waiting- for something that’s changing.
So it’s gradually estranging- from a world that’s making
None of its choices itself,
Just like the sea and yourself.
You know it can’t ask for help.
You know we can’t ask for help.
That’s how it goes.
That’s how it goes.

And we are pulling in the parts of atoms.
We are making folks believe in faith again.
A grandest notion that is eating itself,
Horrified again by Acts’ Holy Wind.

None of its choices itself,
Just like the sea and yourself.
You know it can’t ask for help.
You know we can’t ask for help.
That’s how it goes.
That’s how it goes.

And monstrosities push forward
No need but aided by people in such high places.
Things are going on in ways unimagined
The rocks all lineup in fresh old faces.

So then it’s hope and it’s hope- till dawn rearranging.
A world waiting just to cope- with all its failings
And it’s all correction
From failed perfection
Because getting it right would mean
That things stop changing.
That’s how it goes.
That’s how it goes.

Pulses Spike and Drop

Pulses spike and drop
Cause we’re not
Living as good
As we could
And we would.
For the sake
Of heartbreak
We’re holding back
And we quickly loose track
And the ideas stack
On each other without use
Because we are too obtuse.

And we
Are the world,
All the boys
And the girls.
All the dreams,
All the schemes,
That got lost in the streams
While we paused
Looking awed
At the mountains;
Thinking God,
But amazement
Ain’t ignorant.
What we get’s
Only what we spent.

Don’t be fooled by the home they try to sell.
Don’t give in to the words they use to quell.
Everyone has their reasons,
Some more fickle than the seasons,
And rain brings things
That we didn’t know.
We’re come and go
As the rain,
As the rain,
As the rain.

Legs, Carry Me

If I could read the birds right
Then I might find my way home.
As it is I’m searching the skies
With wandering eyes that endlessly roam.
And the stars are desperate at best.
They sit and rest waiting for the night.
All people may see it the same
So why they came ain’t wrong and ain’t right.

So carry me, carry me.
Legs, carry me.
So carry me, carry me.
Legs, carry me.
So much to see…
Can’t stop here.
So much to see…
Can’t stop here.
So much to be…
Can’t stop here.

The maps, the maps, the maps ain’t no good.
Don’t point the right place, don’t do what they should.
So let the horizon be crippled by lines,
And let all the space be negated by time.
Wandering, wondering, lost in your thoughts
Won’t do you no good cause all time is bought.
And all good intentions will come to an end
While people are waiting for things to begin.

So carry me,
Legs, carry me.
So carry me.
Legs, carry me.
So much to see…
Can’t stop here.
So much to see…
Can’t stop here.
So much to be…
Can’t stop here.

Things Pass in Different Ways

To touch the ground
Would be meaningless
As the sound
Of your falling dress
If I can’t
Get my head back
On my shoulders.

And the words
They come and come again.
Like the birds,
Like the blowin’ winds,
But I can’t
Get my head back
On my shoulders.

We watch, and watch, and watch the clouds
For different shapes and thoughts enshroud
We put our pieces where we want.
Hearts swelling and souls gaunt.

And to touch the ground would be meaningless
As the sound of your falling dress
If I can’t
If I can’t
Get my head back on my shoulders.

And to touch the ground would be meaningless
As the sound of your falling dress
If I can’t
If I can’t
Get my head back on my shoulders.

Here are some songs that haven't been recorded:

Down at the Door to my Building

Down at the door to my building
There was a girl and her kid.
She asked if I had a girlfriend.
I lied to her that I did.
She asked, “You want another?
I said, “No. I was fine.
She asked, “What about your friends upstairs?
I said, “What friends of mine?

And I walked to my car.
And I went where I was going.
She turned back to the door.
It was cold but not snowing.
I think the kid was maybe four,
Or perhaps even five.
She didn’t look too used to the work,
But she didn’t look too shy.

Here and Midnight

I walk down to the store; it’s midnight.
Too late to try to look good.
And in all the honesty’s might
People are not what they would.
It’s a chance to move to center.
No reason to stand straight.
Like a long a steadfast winter,
Sleep used to just escape…
To just escape.

And I love you in the evening
When there’s no one to see.
I may be only dreaming,
Out of touch with reality.
So I glance to myself,
I’m just as lost as before.
But the grey skies give me help.
What is here is nothing more…
Is nothing more…

And I love you in the evening
When no one’s trying to look good.
What we’re being, what we’re seeming,
And then again, what we should.
It’s too late to try to look good.
It’s too late to try to look good.
It’s too late to try to look good
‘Cause what we are ain’t what we would or could…
Ain’t what we would or could…

My Addiciton (AKA Passport)

I got a passport.
It gets me outta here.
I got a passport.
It’s crumpled and dear.
I got a passport
Cause I can’t stay long.
I got a passport
Cause I always wanna be gone.
I got a passport.
I got a passport.
I got a passport, a passport
I gotta, gotta… get moving on.

Don’t try to find me
Because I won’t stop.
Wherever I am
Will be where I’m not.
Got to keep moving.
Got to keep moving.
Things are improving
Just not here now.
Just not here now.
Just not here now.

I can clench horizons.
I can live in dreams.
I can blur the borders.
I can tear the seams.
I can keep moving.
I can keep moving.
I can keep moving.
I can keep improving.
Cause I got a passport.
Cause I got a passport.
Cause I got a passport.
I got a passport.
I got a passport….

From my Window

Looking out
Onto low-rise concrete
And steel antennas
In the air
It’s easy thought
That it’s all dead.
That there’s no one
Really there.
And from my window,
From my window,
From my window
It looks bare.
From my window,
From my window,
From my window,
It looks bare…

And sun sets
Behind the chimneys
Of the graying
Factories.
As if it
Wants to say
There’s beauty there
To believe,
But I can’t
Escape the fact
Of granite faces
In pickup trucks
Who if
They live or die
Wouldn’t really
Give a fuck.

And from my window,
From my window…
And from my window,
From my window…
And from my window
Things seem to grow
In ways indifferent.
In ways indifferent.

Sometimes Naps aren’t Enough

Give me some time
To just be dead.
Some time to rest
My weary head.
Not fickle sleep
With wake and dreams.
Just give me nothing
Cause nothing’s clean.

Give me some time.
Give me some time
To just be dead,
A cleared out head.
Give me some time.
Give me some time
To just be dead,
To just be dead.

The Show

Come on down
And see the show.
See the lights.
See them glow.
Come on down
And see the show.
See the people
Come and go.
Come on down.
It’s only lights.
And as they dance
That’s only life.

Come on down to the show.
There’s music and everything.
Come watch the fireworks blow.
Come hear the fireworks sing.

And let the lights come through,
And let them go too far
This is all that we can do.
Here is the show. We are the star.

And the lights!
And the lights!
Let them explode into the night.
Here’s the show!
Here’s the show!
For better or worse it comes and goes.
Life and light, and
Light and sound, and
It’s all dancing
All around.

Here’s the show!
Here’s sight!
Here’s explosions
In the night.
Here is thought and
Here are we
Arms stretched out so
Desperately.

Come on down!
Come on down!
Come on down to the show.
Come on down!
Come on down!
It’s here now but it will go.
Come to the show!

Some free verse poems:

Take leave,
Take leave.
I seldom find it’s good to stay
Anywhere.
With anyone.

But what can you do for that?
What else
Plagues that horizon so?
The paths are there I’m sure,
But that seems so far
From me.
Though I have been wandering,
And, I feel,
Been good at it.

All that’s not much, though,
And it’s only fitting
That capacities
Were still left wanting.
Them legs,
Them legs,
They’d do good to keep working,
For what else
Am I supposed to do?

Ah, but then that’s right,
Those legs fear peace so,
Even to thrash about
In sleep.
I wonder who
Has trained who.
Either way
Here I am
For whatever moments
Find their way.

Don’t be like that.
The ideas that you had
Are just as bad
If you don’t
Change.
Nothing rearranges
Itself.
So you ask and you ask,
“Who the hell am I?
Don’t mean a thing.
Don’t mean a thing.
The ideas are piling up
In the back of your brain
And will keep on like that
Until you find
Some new way.

Didn’t you know
That people all over
This world
Are trying and failing
Stuck the same way,
But I guess
Sometimes with different words
And numbers.
Stuck and repeating
And hard at all,
But if you ain’t doing that
Some people take notice.
And that is
Really how it is.

Don’t you know
It’s too late to be here?
Don’t you know we’re
Running like mad?
It’s OK.
It’s not a big deal.
But these are things
That you should know.

The tint of morning light
On cheap Venetian blinds
Is beautiful
In it’s own way,
But it is harrowing,
And sterile,
And blinding
In its own way
As well.

I keep the tags
Of my checked bags on
For far too long.
A slant display
Of where I’ve been, and
How I plan
To keep moving,
A vacant tale of how
I can’t seem
To be happy here,
A braggadocio of fleeing,
A whimper at satiety.
I should just throw them
Away.

And a random paragraph I wrote which I may turn into a short story. We'll see.

Beating down these foreign, familiar streets, there’s this knot that always in my stomach. I’m worried, I think, or excited. I breathe in and there’s a smell, there’s always a smell, that is new but made up of so many notes that have passed my nares before. The smell of food, the smell of people, the smell of garbage, the smell of trees, the smell of the city itself all tumbling together into that distinct perfume that I know so well, but is unique each time. I look around and all the old shops and people are lining the road. I look at the grocer’s fresh produce, each time with some strange fruit that I have not yet seen or tasted. I look at the butcher shop with the same cuts of meat hanging in the window, only cut slightly differently so purposefully. I look at the tailor making the same stitches I have seen so many times in lines that I have not. I look at all the pretty girls that pass me by like they always have, with subtle changes in faces and tones of skin that draw my eye anew, and I look at the men watching me look at their girls and thinking thoughts to themselves of letting this stranger know where he stands. I look at the old men and women who no longer have cares for such matters and instead simply talk with one another about matters which don’t decay with time. I take in all these sights and smells while my stomach is still sliding between excitement and anxiety and I feel that I am home again, finally. Home again in this place thousands of miles away from my friends and my family. Home again in an open plain without borders that extends nearly to infinity before finding itself once more. Home again abroad.

Under Crumbling Balconies

Standing ‘neath the balconies of lovers
Who’ve long ago forgotten us in time.
Our necks outstretched and watching the stars
Fixed up in their moments so sublime.

And this is where we should be
Caught up in our own dreams
Waiting for the lightning strike.
This is where we should be
Eyes upturned constantly
Waiting for that perfect light.

Turn your head up.
Turn your head up.
Turn your head up and breathe.
Lift yourself up.
Lift yourself up.
Lift yourself up and leave.

Standing ‘neath the balconies of lovers
Caught in moments long since gone.
No idea what we’re still doing here.
No idea what once went wrong

We’ve lost ourselves in time.
Can’t repeat the same old line.
There’s flowers creeping cross our feet.
Long since lost ourselves in time.
In past moments’ fading shine.
Drowning between wake and sleep.

Turn your head up.
Turn your head up.
Turn your head up and breathe.
Lift yourself up.
Lift yourself up.
Lift yourself up and leave.

No Recreation Here

Calm down.
It’s all the way
You know, you know, you know.
Come down.
It’s all the same.
It goes, it goes, it goes.

Talk quietly inside.
Talk quietly and lie.
Talk quietly and breathe.
Talk quietly to me.
Talk quietly inside.
Talk quietly and lie.
Talk quietly and breathe.
Talk quietly to me.

Calm down, calm down.
It’s all the same, you know.
Come down, come down.
All the same and it will go.
And to breathe
Will let my head tilt back.
Soon my eyes will settle down
And perhaps the light relax.

Talk quietly inside.
Talk quietly to me.
Talk quietly and lie.
Talk quietly and breathe.
Talk quietly inside.
Talk quietly to breathe.
Talk quietly and lie.
Talk quietly to me.
Talk quietly,
Quietly to me,
Quietly to me.

Couple more-

A Little Cross

I’ll bring you a little cross,
And you can bear it.
You can bear it if you want.
I’ll bring you a little cross,
And you can hold it,
You can hold it if you want.

And maybe we don’t have to be
So different,
So different all the time.
And maybe we won’t have to see
Such difference,
Such difference all the time.

And maybe we can work well
Together,
Such a pleasure all the time.
And maybe we can all tell
Each other
It’s such a pleasure all the time.

I’ll bring you a little cross,
And you can bear it.
You can bear it if you want.
I’ll bring you a little cross,
And you can leave it.
You can leave it if you want.

And maybe we don’t have to be
So different,
So different all the time.
And maybe we won’t have to see
Such difference,
Such difference all the time.

And maybe we can work well
Together,
Such a pleasure all the time.
And maybe we can all tell
Each other
It’s such a pleasure all the time.

I’ll bring you a little cross,
And you can bear it.
You can bear it if you want.
I’ll bring you a little cross,
And you can hold it,
You can hold it if you want.
I’ll bring you a little cross,
And you can leave it.
You can leave it if you want.
I’ll bring you a little cross,
And you can break it.
You can break it if you want

I’ll bring you a little cross.
I’ll bring you a little cross.
I’ll bring you a little cross.
I’ll bring you a little cross.

The People and the World Undone

I’m trying to put together
The jagged edges of each other,
So that we can be,
Just be. . .

I’m trying to take in
The differences that won’t mend.
Take them inside me,
So we can just be.
So we
Can just be. . .

And perhaps there is no point,
Too many breaks and too few joints,
So we can never live so easy.
And perhaps I’m wasting time,
Too many fissures for us to bind,
But maybe the pieces can fall gently.

And there’s a world that broke apart
In each person’s knotted heart
Cause I am you, but you are not me.
Too many shattered bits to bear,
Too much to ask, too much to care,
And none of us can love completely.

I’m trying to put together
The jagged edges of each other,
So that we can be,
Just be. . .

I’m trying to take in
The differences that won’t mend.
Take them inside me,
So we can just be.
So we
Can just be. . .

Time is the Dearest of Things

Give it time
To get your head back,
To get your melody,
To get back on track.
Give it time
To laugh easy,
Time to make pace,
And breathe deeply.

Give it time,
Let rest your head.
Give it time,
Let go your dread.
Give it time,
All things are here.
Give it time
Cause time is dear…
Time is dear.

Let rest,
Let rest your head…
Let rest,
Let rest your weary head…
Time is
Simply a close friend.
Time is
Simply your closest friend.
With you to the very end.

Give it time
To get your head back,
To get your melody,
To get back on track.
Give it time
To laugh easy,
Time to make pace,
And breathe deeply.

Give it time,
Let rest your head.
Give it time,
Let go your dread.
Give it time,
All things are here.
Give it time
Cause time is dear…
Time is dear.

They're mostly songs. Obviously the few free verse ones aren't, but like I said songs are just poems with meter and rhyme scheme.
