How do you usually feel an hour after lifting weights? Got a nice pump going? Or are you as tender as beef in a meat locker before Rocky's big match? If you feel pumped instead of sore, you probably did some static stretching before you worked out, just like P.E. teachers and workout gurus having been telling you to do your whole life. And that's a good thing, isn't it? Well, keep reading.
Muscle growth (natural) happens only one way. After a workout, the body says, "holy shit, what the f*** happened? I better grow some more muscle so this doesn't happen again." Muscle damage has to occur for the fibers to be rebuilt stronger. Wait a second, doesn't stretching prevent injuries? Ho ho! Now we're getting somewhere.
Maybe you did a hundred push ups but this time without stretching and even three days later you're still being hammered in the chest every time you take a breath. That's how you know that some muscle is being built this time, despite the same weight and reps.
This has been a mangaddict service announcement. Hope some n00bs voted number one, haha.
The only reason I don't bother with warm-up and cool-down is because my activity level negates the need for it: I'm always warmed up.
Stretching should not be skipped, however, if for no other reason than it improves flexibility. Maybe if you're going for mountainous physique, you don't care about flexibility, but I'm aiming more for a Spider-Man build. If I can't touch my toes, I'm going to regret it.(Ever seen someone worm his way out of an arm-bar by rolling through it? I've done it, the look on the other guy's face is golden!)
Also, yes, it does help prevent injury, and I'm going to laugh when you snap all the tendons in your wrists and can't move your fingers anymore.(ahem. If you know what I mean.)
Kids, we've been through this before. Don't take physical fitness advice from Mangaaddict, he doesn't know what he's talking about. _________________ The pen is mightier than the sword

Scientists have recently figured out that pre-stretching does not prevent injury, but my body tells me otherwise. I DO notice a different level in soreness the day after training, depending on whether or not I stretched before hand. I also know that soreness is GOOD. Things are HAPPENING. I just put 2 and 2 together.
The really big fitness gurus tell you not to stretch until after your first warm up set. And I totally get it now. Anyone else that has you stretching before you pick up a dumbbell can go to hell. :p
Sorry Tony Horton. I love you but you're a tiny dude.
And I'm a very flexible guy. X Stretch, Yoga X, Fountain of Youth, I've done it all.

I'm a little.. erm.. disturbed. Lol. XD
EDIT: I have a fleshlight, stamina unit. Get with the times, "Lonewolf" *caugh* *caugh*
I wouldn't know. I've only had soreness happen once, and as I recall, it's because I did a downright obscene amount of exercise that day.

Saw a review on Gizmodo about those. He basically said it can't compare to your old girlfriend, Lefty, and her sister, Righty. _________________ The pen is mightier than the sword

If you don't get sore, then all exercise you do is only maintaining what you already have. Yeah, I used to think I had a super body too when I didn't get sore. Looking back it was total narcisism.

It takes some getting used to, but its stamina training after all! And lefty and righty are homo boyfriends, btw. XP
I didn't get sore at all the summer I worked construction.
I went into it thinking a hammer was heavy, and cane out one-man carrying drywall two sheets at a time and pitching long boards into a dumpster from a distance.
Simple fact of the matter is, my body heals quickly enough that the amount of exercise I have to do to be sore the next day would either take all day and I'd get bored and want to go do something else, or I'd have to pull enough weight I'd risk snapping tendons.
Speaking of tendons, how do you hold your synthetic girlfriend if your hands are both in traction? _________________ The pen is mightier than the sword
