I was surprised that there wasn't a thread for this already, but I guess most people have written it off as a K-ON! copy?
Although the character designs are the same, the show is a little deeper, and I like it thus far. Anyone else agree? _________________

lol I was actually just about to suggest making a thread so that it’s easier for discussions rather than just squeezing in the comment sections.
(Based on 2episodes) There were certainly some interesting undertones, such as the part about the base actually being formerly a school, the anachronism etc. However, so far, the only thing that really stood out is the art. While I do enjoy 5cm/s, the movie does rely too much on its art to pull through; or rather, because its story is rather simplistic that it must bank on its art. Don’t take this the wrong way, but ultimately, good graphics alone is not enough to compensate the delivery of a story. Similarly, for Sora no Woto, will the art be the sole thing pulling it up (making it outstanding) or will it be the element which complements as much enhance the series?
Still, the series has potential. Like I said, the undertones and various mentions of the place’s culture is really intriguing, to say the least.

I’ve been trying to avoid mentioning K-ON! in regards to this series in various posts (blogs, comments etc) but well here goes: Sora no woto may or may not be banking on moe to sell, but the fact that they chose to choose said art style is one thing I’m curious about. If Sora no woto is going to be more than just a moeblob show (which so far, I think it’s likely, because despite the moe character designs, the show doesn’t really give off the moe vibe) then I think it would have been a waste to use such designs to begin with, because y’know that’s what turned people away.
On the other hand, if it really ended up as just “if KyoAni made Strike Witches”, then the fantastic art would have been kinda wasted, or rather, just for show. Well, perhaps they chose this character designs in order to draw in as much different type of fans as possible, I wouldn’t know; it’s all just speculations on my part.

It is kind of an odd choice, but since moe is what has been selling more than anything else it makes a lot of business sense. If you think about it, A-1 made the same choice with Kannagi, using moe character designs to draw in an audience along with very pretty backgrounds. I guess moe is the new fanservice, and in a difficult economy you have to pander to the audience that's going to buy the most stuff.
That being said, you're right that Sora no Woto is not just a moeblob show, especially after watching the third episode. Kanata is still a bit ditzy, but she's a lot more self-aware, and takes things seriously. She's also probably the closest in personality to a moeblob character.

I'd rather have gratuitous moe than gratuitous fanservice, any day!
I would like a decent show to go with it, though... but I felt lots of people were very unfair about K-On in that regard. Sure it was like HYPER-moe - which did put a lot of people off - but there was a decent (funny) show underneath, if you cared to look.
Like you guys say, though, I don't think Sora no Woto is going to go the moeblob route. I think things will get darker soon enough.

Totally agreed.
Also, as of ep3, I have high hope for this series. Sure, I may not be banking on something dramatic like say, ToraDora at the later part, but hey, it looks like the storyline's pretty solid.

I like it so far. I hope they get the tank working. I like this type of anime with an old world feel like Spice & Wolf or Last Exile but incorporating futuristic technologies/fighting. Hope we see some more action in the future.

I'll second that moe vs. fanservice statement! (Or third it because Kevin agreed as well)

Next week's preview made it look like there might be some fighting involved with them in full military getup.
One thing I was glad for in episode 4 was that
Kanata finally learned how to bugle properly. I was afraid that they were going to keep that as a running gag all season, and I'm glad that they didn't.
