Ok, i'll be the first to ask....
Q1 ) Can someone pls tell me what is the meaning of rasterizing? Something always pops up when i use free transform or other things, and it says something about rasterizing.
Q2 ) What is the use of a layer mask? I have heard people in this forum saying that the layer mask is so useful and great things about it. i tried, based on the help page in photoshop, but it doesn't seem so... well, useful?
What so good about it?
Mostly, Rasterizing means to make a layer into an image. That's why it asks first before doing so, because for example:
1.) You rasterize a "text" layer, or any layer that is not an image layer to make it into an image layer. Notice the layer has a T icon, meaning, that it's a text layer.
2.) Once rasterized, it'll become an image layer. So that you could do things you usually do on an image. Now, look at it's icon. The T icon was replaced by a miniature image of what the text layer has become.
So basically, it makes layers into an image layer....
As for the Masking... I'm not sure myself. Maybe it pertains to the Pen Tool? _________________ EX-mod

wow, thanks for taking the effort to make the screenshots, it made things much easier for me! wierd, how come no ones coming to this sticky? i thought it should be quite popular since there are so many enthusiastic artists here.
meganekko, thanks for telling me to post my Photoshop questions here.
I'd like to ask, if I were to create an drawing on a blank piece of paper, take a picture of the said drawing using a digital camera and save it into my computer in jpeg format; how should I edit the picture file using Photoshop to get clear and thin (or thick) outlines, but at the same time, eliminating the background (the paper) and leaving only a white, blank canvas behind the outlines?
I've been using the polygonal lasso tool for a few of my previous drawings. But it's pretty tedious and time-consuming. Please help.

tough question you got there. I'm a traditional artist, just that i draw on photoshop CS2. Guess i can't help much.
But for me, when i scan a picture, to make the lines bolder, i play around with the contrast and brightness, this makes the black.. more black, and the white...more white. this way, using magic wand would be much easier. If the magic wand still only selects a portion of what you want, you can try playing with the tolerance.
Oh, and i heard from meganekko-san, that the smartblur filter is really good to get rid of noise. this makes the difference of two colours easier for the computer to read. Hope i helped...
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try that. How do you colour your drawings using Photoshop, by the way?
I hope I'm not bothering you and everyone with my questions, I really like to know about the Photoshop techniques out there, apart from the one I've been using.
Alright guys, I have a few questions but I'll stasrt by just asking one. How do you guys use the layer tool to coor. Can I draw on one layer then color another layer? And then when I finsh with everything, can I just make them into one image? Sorry, I dono't realy know how to put my thoughts into words so if you'd be so kind to help me, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance! _________________ The hardest person to forgive is yourself~

hiya takasan,
ok, for layers, it seems to me that using layers are very effective when doing drawings and colorings. to me, layers are convenient as you have the ability to split up colouring and lines etc. i kinda means like splitting up the entire project into different... layers. lets say you want to color the face, but that may affect the nose and eyes. for me, i select the eyes and nose and mouth, copy them into another layer, then color the original layer OVER the eyes... But as there is a layer for the eye etc, above the one that you just coloured, the eyes etc will be still present. plus, tweaking of the opacity of layers seem to be quite effective for me.
to merge the layers into just one image, go the layers, flatten image or merge visible, i'm still not quite sure of the difference.
hope i helped and hope you can understand...
oh, and seems like not many contributing, come here pls....
Thanks [jiashore] as a matter of fact I do have a better understanding of it now. But the only thing I don't get is how to go about doing all of that. The understanding of the concept is easy, but how I'm supposed to go about it I am still kind of confused. You guys think you can do something to this quicksketch of mine and tell me how you did it?
Just a short example would be nice with some sreccn shots. No need to go into detail. ^^
And yes I don't think too many epople are usnig this thread. What a shame, this is a really good way to get help and tone your skills! So I thank you guys for making and maintaining this thread. _________________ The hardest person to forgive is yourself~

i'll do my best, can i just do the forearm, the lines are more defined, it'll make it much easier. whew, 2 requests and the competition, plus this, sure is taking a toll, anyway, ganbarimasu, i'll do my best. hope to see more questions.
Don't worry I'll try and do some of these requests too if I have time. Sorry guys if I hadn't been able to help you out... It's Finals Week and we have a lot of projects/exams....
And jiashore's right about the brightness/contrast maiking the lines more pronounced. Adjust them and you'll have the dark lines darker, the blank spaces whiter...
And the Smart Blur really works wonders! Just try and experiment with it and you'll have your drawings smooth and clean, it'll look like it was done by an anime artist itself~!
Thank you guys for participating to this thread. I do hope a lot more will come and ask any questions, we'll try and answer them right away~ _________________ EX-mod

hiya all again, i'm kinda busy right now, but i too have some questions.
can someone provide help on how to get rid of noise? I also need some help with using the smartblur tool, its really confusing. and my computer really lags alot when i use it, that because the pics i work with are almost 50mb plus. the paintbrush at 5o pixel size is only about the size of the mouse. help pls.
oh, pls bring in more people here, the people who ask around here are only me, meganekko-san, and takasan. COme on, MORE people pls...
aha jiashore, i get what ur sayin with the requests. gaia ppl are flooding me x_x
as for the lagging, i dont think you can fix it... when that happens to me, i just use a smaller brush. maybe its the amount of free space on ur comp. i know when u delete unneeded files, the whole comp + programs run faster. _________________ [img:194:68:40fea01228]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v53/HTMLka0s/ajbanner.jpg[/img:40fea01228]
