Synopsis & Reviews @ Anime-Source.com
Chinese fansub group POPGO came up with episode 1. Heard a lot of hype over this from the manga readers. They seem very enthusiastic over this series and by and by I picked up a short synopsis from their talk.
In 1986, Tenma, a Japanese neurosurgeon in Germany saved a boy who was shot in the head. He did this against the orders of his patron who had wanted him to operate on a politician then. He had done it out of guilt (for not saving a patient earlier in a similar situation). Thus his career sank. Years later, a series of mysterious murders put rise to Tenma's career. Tenma starts to investigate these events.
Sounds interesting. I downloaded the sub and it does seem faithful to what the readers had said.
Animation wise, the art is good. Clean lines, colours etc. Character design were more towards the smaller eyed anime characters. Not much saucer eye characters wander here. Not many pretty characters as well. One complaint that I had is that all their personality seem to be openly displayed on their faces. You have Tenma the blur naive look. The evil ugly appearances of the neurosurgery director and his daughter. The envious, couldn't be bothered Dr Becker. It just seems to plain obvious what they are. Maybe this would be different later. Of course this might seem a good design to others. Trivia: Dr Movie had a part in the animation.
I'm just curious on how it will go. Perhaps someone who had read the manga could spoil me here. Will this turn into something ala Fugitive but he goes round (not persecuted) every episode bumping into non-connected events and helping these people. Overall goal might still be hunting that kid. Will these events be real-life drama or with dash of supernatural elements? |

| What an interesting first episode. This is definitely a series that I'm going to follow this season. Hopefully the following episodes wont take a nosedive with the plot. |

I have a feeling that this will be the best anime of the season... first ep was enough to hook me into this series. I hope people don't see the animation and stop watching.. cause really it looks like it's going to be a good one. _________________ Urgo... living in Vancouver now go Calgary Flames! |

| I wanted to watch this since it's based on a very good (and long running) manga by Naoki Urasawa... But the fact that it runs for A YEAR AND A HALF chased me off for a bit... I'll a bit too stuffed to watch such a long series, so maybe I'll watch this once some of the anime I'm watching finishes. |

Yep heard it is supposed to run for 70 episodes. Also heard that the manga either finished or is finishing its run.
If the future episodes prove good, I might consider going out to search and buy the manga...
Come on... darkhunger, surely you can shelve some of your Gundam anime to make room for this? |

Actually I've already finished every Gundam anime that I could get my hands on (other than G and Turn A).
And the manga is scanned too I think, and it should be on the eDonkey network... But anyway, I'll see. Already following around 20 series anyway, so one more might not hurt too much... |

I just watched the first episode and I can say the characters are drawn much more realistically here, not your standard cute anime fashion and the story.. man...
The mood of the series really gets you drawn in and I do have to agree this could very well turn out into the best series of spring 2004. |

| Wow, first impressions really do count, and the first episode is a really good conversion from the manga. As for the best spring anime of 2004, i think this could be it. |

Wow...
I watched the second episode and they don't wait to just right into the plot.
Things are really starting to heat up. I'm gonna make a prediction that
somehow the boy he saved is evil. Maybe he's the one who killed the parents or he's just carrying out the wishes of Dr Tenma? Hmm.. its a mystery so far, we'll just have to watch and see =) Great series.

Very interesting second episode.
Responce to Kaisers prediction:
Being that the Director was killed at his home, I doubt it was the boy who did it. If I had to guess, I'd say it was some maniac whos trying to kill any one who has anything to do with the shildren or something like that.

Blah I gave in and downloaded Eps 1+2... Curse my weak will...
I also think that its the boy who did it... His twin sister wouldn't be so scared of him otherwise...
Anyway, maybe the boy happens to be a MONSTER?

| Yup, I'm reading the manga right now. Let's just say it gets interesting FAST (compared to other mystery manga I've read) |

Whoa, 70 eps >_<
Well, it's not like there are no good long running shows and this one looks very promising from the start. Unlike the other show this season that's trying to be realistic to some extent (Yugo) this one might actually be great.
I love the music in the OP btw, the best I've heard in a long time. |
