Every good anime bulletin board deserves an Akira thread so here's ours. Smile

I dug this out of the collection to watch again last night. I've seen it plenty of times already but somehow I always forget just how good this film really is. Of course I'd like it even better if it had proper subtitles instead of the hard of hearing substitute. That's what happens when you buy stuff Confused

Anyway, if I had to define anime with one movie this would be it. Absolutely excellent!

I remember driving to Chicago to see it at the Musicbox theater when it was first released in the US. Oh the good old days...

Akira is the animation that I judge all other animation against. I say animation instead of anime, because to tell the truth, I had never even heardh the turm anime back then.

I remember the sitting in the theather, when the very first seen started, my friend leaned over and asked "This is animated, right?". Those first five minutes where absolutely breathtaking.

I liked the movie a lot, even though the story(from manga) got cut up and shortened, they made it work, i've seen it again (fourth time i think) and I don't regret watching it, a very good movie

I was turned on to the comic before I saw the movie. I was at a local comic book store and a buddy of mine was going through the $.25 and pulled out a couple Akira issue 1s. Yes, I bought the first isssue of Akira for 25 cents.

Lucky for me my friend got hooked on it too and ended up picking up the tilte. I would have never been able to aford a $5.95 comic back then.

In the end, I never got the chance to read the last couple volumes until just about a year ago. Nice to finally get some clarification.

Oh hands down this is got to be a movie that deserves praise. It did so much for anime in the states, it set a bar for anime. I love this movie. Its so deep and so darn good. I was actually confused a bit cause when i saw it i realized i had seen the manga back at borders. Well i really didnt know what manga was or what anime and manga had to do with each other so when i fliped through the pages and i saw a relativle close story but not the same story i became a bit confused. Luckily my older cousin was able to clear this up for me later on. Anyway its alwas gonna be a movie that resonates in my mind as one of the best.

My own interpretation follows below. You really don't want to read it if you haven't seen this film yet:
Akira is the ultimate energy, right? It's the energy that binds things and - in essence - makes the universe what it is. This is what the girl tells us when she's communicating with Rei in the prison cell. During the explosive ending, the mad scientist tells us what's happening as he reads the data from his machines. He says something like, "according to these readings, this is the begining of the universe!"

And that's exactly what's happening. Tetsuo's energy is like that of Akira's: it's the energy of a universe, and Akira and the other kids use their powers to take him somewhere else (another dimension?) where they form a new universe. If you think about it, Tetsuo's exponential growth and the way he consumes everything is a personification of the big bang. At the end of the film the very last line spoken (if I'm not mistaken) is, "I am Tetsuo." If Tetsuo is the universe and he still has a concience then one has to conclude that Tetsuo is God in that universe. So things work out pretty well for him in the end, I'd say! Very Happy

It took me a few times to watch the film before I got there. If anyone has a different theory I'd be keen to hear it. Smile

i don't know if anyones noticed but Neon Genesis Evangelion totally ripped of akira, i think Evangelion went to far. don't get me wrong its a good film but after watching the "End of Evangelion" my head was spinning , i hate it when the director gets too "deep".

I think akira had a good balance of philosophy and ass kicking.....akira was the first anime i ever saw....if i didn't come accorss it i would have never even known anime/manga even existed.

i think they should make an akira series...that would rock or maybe a prequel series about the gang that would own

The message of the film seems to be to depict the idea that what we know about humanity has been gained through pain and destruction. Akira was an evolved human who didn't need his body any more. But why do we know, as an audience, that Tetsuo, found Akira? Because the strange girl told him? Or is it because most of the audience knows what the inside of a human looks like even if he or she has never even looked inside a human before in their life. The knowledge of the inside of the human body was not always acceptable practice but we live longer today because of that knowledge of humans. But, has that increased vitality caused humans to tap into too much of our potential? The atomic bomb was not a single idea of a single generation, but a high of knowledge which was gained from past generations. The transfer of knowledge is tied to enegry, and building thinks like houses and atomic bombs only makes our use of enegry more directed at a destructive end of humanity. Whether you wish to acknowledge that the enegry that we are using to destroy ourselves will produce some neo-genesis, or will simply evolve to a higher form of enegry, is not decided by the film. The only clear message I got from the film is that our use of enegry and the collection of scientific inquiry has led humanity to give birth to things that are more human than human - cartoons, gods, and animals with human characteristics.

Why did Number 26 flee? Despite what the Colonel says to the scientist he actually doesnt ruthlessly exploit the numbers or treat them that badly. They even save him from death or whatever would have happened if he was assimilated into Tetsuo.
